On September 21st, 2016, Leonard Cohen celebrated his 82nd birthday with the release of a stunning new single called "You Want It Darker". On October 21st, 2016, he unveiled an entire new album. That same week, the Canadian Consulate in Los Angeles hosted a listening event for the album. As part of the event, I spoke with Leonard and his son, Adam, who produced the album with contributions from Patrick Leonard, Sharon Robinson and a male vocal choir from Montreal. 

At 82 years old, and given his current health, this was his only scheduled interview surrounding the release. Accordingly, journalists from around the world were also in attendance.

Just two minutes of bubbly ambiance recorded inside the fountain at Balboa Park's beautiful Alcazar Garden. My recordings from this part of the park came from the end of my afternoon there, and I set up both my stereo mic and the hydrophone for a series of takes. Like much of my time in San Diego the weather was gorgeous and ideal for recording. Stay tuned for the rest of this EP coming this week.

Michael Lawrence is a keyboardist and composer based in San Diego. An avid practitioner of improvisation, he works in electronic, experimental, and classical styles. His recent single, Nocturne, was included on Syntheclectico, aired on WHYR in Baton Rouge, LA. The title track of his synth EP, Into the Darkness, was featured on WXPN's Star's End Radio hosted by Chuck Van Zyl. In 2018 he represented Philadelphia for 60 Minute Cities, a project with Bivouac Recording of Shanghai, China featuring field recording albums from around the world. For eleven years he was also an assistant grand court organist on the Wanamaker Organ, one of the world’s most famous musical instruments.
