When trying to make creative decisions based on the results of somebody else's process it makes you try things out that perhaps you wouldn't normally think of and I'd say with every remix I've ever done I've come away with something new.  Sometimes its interesting to take a track in a completely new direction but in the case of Max and Tom's collaboration I was immediately drawn to the subtle harmonic undercurrent of the synth lines beneath the main piano parts and figured it would be interesting to put together an arrangement that brought that to the fore. 

I started with a rough layering and overlay of the piano samples - trying to re-arrange them into different combinations than in the original to create something that had the same feel (on a side note, its always pleasing to work with recordings like this of instruments that sound played - i.e., you can hear the movement of the pedals and the fingers on the keys rather than a surgically-extracted sequence of notes) but that came to the main melodies from a different angle.  I can't really compete with Max's glitchy rhythmic production and since this is so distinctive it seemed like a bit of a cop-out to make too much use of these samples in any case so in the end the main part of what I used of the rhythm was a short kick drum sample that I processed in various ways to create the studded melodic cross-rhythm that I used for most of the middle of the track.

With the bare bones in place the majority of the rest of the work came from layering up the arrangement with the kinds of synths and strings that I make use of in my Petrels stuff.  Like I said, I was drawn to the low root synth line in the original that casts a subtle melodic shade over the piano lines so using this as a starting point I slowly built up the orchestration around it so as to make it much more of a focal point.  In the end, hopefully the result is something akin to a huge group of assorted musicians attempting a spontaneous live version of what essentially started as a duet performance. Well that was the idea anyhow.

Once again this Transatlantic pairing have struck gold as Compuphonic’s distinctive brand of deeply emotional, nuanced, House Music provides the perfect setting for Marques’ plaintive vocals. With it’s distinctive Korg M1 organ and shuffling beats ‘Magical Shoes’ instantly brings to mind legendary ‘90s New York clubs like The Sound Factory but thanks to Compuphonic’s production skills it goes well beyond that of simple period pastiche and sounds utterly fresh for 2015, a bonafide club hit that is already peppering the sets of DJs such as Laurent Garnier, Tensnake and The Magician.

As the title suggests the EP’s 2nd track ‘The Sun Does Rise’ is the natural successor to the duo’s previous outing. This is one of the standout tracks of Tilt’s ‘Resonator’ album, co-written with founding LFO member Gez Varley. Between my being asked to do the remix & getting started on it the other half of LFO, Mark Bell, died suddenly. I decided to abandon the approach I’d planned for the remix & do something that tried to capture the freedom & limitless psychedelic possibility that dance music had when it first exploded into a multiplicity of new styles in the UK, a moment captured perfectly in time by LFO ‘LFO’. Partial PR: The lone interpretation of 'Without Boxes' is provided by Petrels who is making his debut on microCastle. UK producer Oli Barrett debuted his Petrels project in 2011 with the release of 'Haeligewielle' which by year's end found its place in numerous best of the year lists. His unique take on ambient electronica also caught the attention of Max Cooper who had Petrels remix 'Fragments of Self' just over year ago. For his 'Without Boxes' interpretation Petrels has truly outdone himself. Working from the grandiose theme which made the original so captivating the UK producer has crafted a majestic, slow burning epic. It's textural shifts and meditative design makes for an enlightening journey and the slow structural decay which rounds out its third act is a granular delight.

One of 2014's most sought after remixers was undoubtedly Dubspeeka. The Bristol based producer is perhaps best known for being one half of the much loved Kosheen project which yielded one of electronic music’s finest ever records in ‘Hide You’. The Dubspeeka production moniker has already amassed an impressive discography with releases on Bedrock, Drumcode, Ideal Audio, Suara and his own Skeleton imprint. For his '7 Hours' interpretation Dubspeeka has stripped the beastly original right down and overhauled it into a romping techno workout. It's tension filled drive is offset with sombre synths and vibrant electronics which pierce the atmosphere with electric flair.

Truly beautiful deep house records are things to be treasured, akin to proper songs that will last the test of time, not made to meet a fleeting fad. This is one of those records and a real pinnacle & departure for BLM & Pawas. Patrice Scott liked the track so much that he agreed to remix it - his first ever outside of his own, excellent, Sistrum label. Using plenty of the original track parts but taking it a different direction, Patrice really has come up with something special. The track moves along with snippets of the main vocal and clever use of the main synth, the groove being underpinned by Patrice’s classic sense of production before moving into a more classic ‘Detroit’ ending - a mindset with a bigger, more dramatic sensibility.

'HUMORES I - IV' is a multidisciplinary project by Yvonne Brouwers and composer Arafúra. The starting point for the project is the Humours theory that was developed by ancient Greek doctors Hippocrates of Kos and Claudius Galenus. This theory states that the human form exists out of four main bodily fluids that all have their individual characteristics. These four fluids are each represented by a 'chapter' of life.

These chapters have been the base for four different artworks, as well as four different tracks that each represent a phase of life. The metamorphoses that takes place within these phases is that of human matter. Humores is a project about the substance of the human body, the way it changes, the wonders of coming into existence and eventually returning into nothingness. It's about our flesh, our bones and the blood that runs within us. It's the one thing we all have in common, the way our body evolves and eventually decomposes.

We hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it.
