“Maisha” is the Swahili word for life.

This album to me expresses the feeling of embracing life in all its forms, with its different perspectives, moods, sounds, energies. In contrast to previous work, which was somewhat more reflective, this album was made with a lot of creative energy and drive. When starting each track I felt like I was overflowing with ideas that I had to try out and get down as soon as possible. Sometimes the inspiration would come from listening to various new albums on Bandcamp from around the world: jazz, African folk, hip-hop, Neo-soul, funk, afrobeat. Other times the inspiration would come simply from biking around Los Angeles and taking in sights and sounds from different parts of the city.

I think there can easily be pressure when making to album for it to feel as though each album has to embody a sophisticated concept or make some specific statement. Albums expressing abstract concepts or political or social statements are important for the musical culture, to be sure; but music is also an expression of where the artist is at spiritually, emotionally, and creatively at a certain point in time. This is what Maisha means for me. It represents the joys, excitements, and bursts of creative feeling, as well as the tranquility and nostalgia that I felt at times while making it. With this work, as with my previous work, I am ever seeking to defy genre. Of course, it’s clear that downtempo and trip-hop music form the backbone of what I am doing, but I am also trying to challenge those labels all the time by exploring different rhythms, scales, arrangements, and instruments.

I hope this album helps you find inspiration to express yourself or explore in whatever ways are possible or speak to you in your life, as it did for me.

‘Somewhere Nowhere’ is instrumental EP by Composer Zeb Samuels.
The EP is a journey of sounds, connecting frequencies that hold a soft and detailed energy.  All music is created & produced by Zeb, with contributions from some very talented musicians.

David Gyamfi (Mr Domini) features on the first track ‘Mellow Horizon’ who we hear on Rhodes Piano.
David is a Church educated / self taught Pianist & guitarist. His compositions here add a beautiful energy of hope and light that are captured in the recording.

Marc Cyril also contributes on Bass for this track and Zeb is performing on Piano.
No physical beat is present, but the heart of the track beats strong with a memorising rhythm that is recorded with an abundance of warmth and low end. 

Another highlight track is ‘Cosmic Sparkles’ that glows with mystical vibrations of higher frequencies. All parts are composed and performed by Zeb with the exception of Bass, again performed by the very talented Bass player, Marc Cyril. The track is an in-depth display of Zeb’s technical abilities as sound engineer and composition work as a writer. 

The EP finishes off with ‘Slumped Improv’ that is a laid back, dreamy production with soft & delicate melodies to drift away with. Washed out pads collide and intertwine with light and precise beat work that lace the track together with style and grace.

“Serengeti” showcases The Echo System’s keen ability to paint ambient soundscapes that tap into both ancient and modern influences. The spacey meditation explores Middle Eastern modes in the bass and guitar interplay with layers of subtle percussion giving nod to the rhythms of the East African plains. The group features three of Color Red’s primary music producers Mike Tallman (guitar) and Josh Fairman (bass), and Jeff Franca (drums) who came together in summer 2018 to write and record a catalog of original music. “Serengeti” also features Joe Tatton of The New Mastersounds on organ to give the song a thick layer of padding building up to the end.
