The first release on the new Jack Said What label accelerates out of the traps. ‘Ear Racer’ by Serge Santiago is an infectious house track that owes more than a hint of debt to the Italo sound that Serge lost himself in during the noughties — a sound that has come swishing back round to being in-vogue again.

Propelled by a burbling topline that bounces around like a ball on a bagatelle board, ‘Ear Racer’ contains some peeps for the whistle posse, piano house chords to ignite a dancefloor, and a couple of dreamy, swirly breakdowns. The track is well named — it’s not so much an ‘earworm’ as an ‘ear racer’, providing electric impetus to transport you elsewhere. 

Serge Santiago has been half of some memorable duos in his time — Radio Slave, Retro/Grade, Waze & Odyssey — but his new solo material signals a fresh chapter for the Brighton-based DJ/producer. Removed from any necessity to compromise, Serge has crafted an album of top-drawer dancefloor gear that he’s serendipitously calling ’11:11’. Released in the autumn, ‘Ear Racer’ is the first single to be taken from that album, while Serge has also rebooted the events brand, Stompa Phunk, he co-founded. There have already been some off-the-hook Stompa Phunk parties at assorted Brighton venues in the past year, with plenty more to come.

It’s going to be a busy second half of 2022 for the highly respected DJ/producer, and look out for a lot more releases coming this year via Jack Said What too.

Jet-setting Irish duo Bicep return to Will Saul's Aus label with two steady analog techno grooves ready for deployment in either their own wildly celebrated sets or those of any DJ looking for modern dance tracks that are still faithful to the classics - this is techno that hasn't forgotten where it came from, essentially.

Using gritty, vintage-sounding rhythm sections as solid foundations, each track gradually builds up its own lush, melodic embellishments overtop - "Circles" stays true to its name with a cyclical main melody, shadowy bass and fuzzy house pads, whereas "NRG106" sets spacey, dramatic chords and breathy vocals against the insistent, chittering machine percussion.

As usual these two esteemed bloggers / DJs / artists / all around polymaths prove themselves to be paragons of taste, but here it's clear that they are also steadily growing as producers, taking on different styles with aplomb and making it all look much easier than it really is.

4 big ol’ chunks of heavy house music are the order of the day from New York producer Ralph Session’s hot new EP for Black Jukebox. Combining his skills as a musician and seasoned DJ along with the technical know-how from his work as an audio engineer, the result is a collection of beautifully crafted, hard-hitting house cutz.
‘That Raw’ features a breathy spoken-word vocal from DJ Amir—one half of the legendary duo Kon & Amir—that laces the soulful, deep production with a hypnotic atmosphere. Thick bass bubbles beneath soaring strings and meandering synth arpeggios to give the track a set-building, big-room feel. ‘Do It’ rocks jaunty snatches of piano and sax over its peppy, skippy beat, with a little New Jersey feel in its incessant, phat-bottomed grove. ‘If You Want’ takes us into a deeper direction with its hazy pad work and dubby touches, with a slinky, rubbery bass groove that throbs hard beneath it all. Turn it up loud and feel it envelop you with its wide-open atmospherics. ‘Raw Sax’ rounds off with a dusty, skipping drum track shuffling around dreamy filtering synths, dubbed-out stab patterns and of course a sultry sax line.

Ready for another House track? How about some real house, from a time before the mp3 changed the game and before sync buttons even existed? Then we’ve got 4 for you this time around, all remixes from Blunted Dummies 1993 ‘House For All’. First up is Berlin-local Ruede Hagelstein with his atmospherically charged remix, taking the tone down just a bit giving the track multiple uses, from home-listening to mid-morning afterhour sets. Next up is DJ. T. who takes the energy up again with his remix. Heavy percussion and a solid bassline-drive give new meaning to the beloved classic.
