Ask any label and they’ll tell you the past year has produced a deluge of beyond-emo track submissions. To be honest, it’s a little tough to humour our artists' complaints about feeling isolated when most of them scoffed at the opportunity to spend 2020 living and working at the Turbo Influencer House. It was a unique opportunity to learn responsibility by maintaining a tidy shared studio space/bunkbed area and keeping Tiga’s electric bicycle charged and ready to dominate the streets 24/7.

But for rising label stars like Nocow, who is based in Saint Petersburg, Russia, we realize that Montreal represents a very expensive boat ride, and our promise of unlimited orange soda before 5 pm and an $80 travel voucher just wasn’t enough. To make it up to us, he submitted over 60 tracks this year, with the ones that made the cut for this release representing the top 8.3%, an astonishing figure by any measure.

Nocow's latest EP perfectly soundtracks the ever-degrading Science Hell we all agreed to by accepting Winamp’s Terms of Service back in 2002, with moody touchscreen vocals alternating with Blade AF electro trance banger vibes. According to Nocow, the title of closing track "Pozdno Vstal” translates as “got up late today,” which just about nails the zeitgeist to the freaking wall. Additionally, this is the kind of hot language tip that could give you the credibility you’ve been sorely lacking on your favorite Russian Cyber-Goth forums.

Vivod label boss Ali Renault serves up this rather moody ep in memory of his late friend, Pete Mangalore of Human Shield fame. The five tracker kicks off with Northdown Acid, a brooding sprawl with elements of Italo and acid combined to beautiful effect. The amusingly titled Imminent Salad follows with its jacking strut groove, laden with lush pads. Peter Summoning breaks up the ep with its simple ambient suggestion. On the flip things get going again with slo mo stomper Forbidden Mind before title track Nawce Blizzard closes with it’s electro style hypnosis. Finally we’re left with an infinite cat purring locked groove to send you to sleep. Great ep from start to finish. All copies come with a free Peter plectrum and vivod sticker. If you know anything about Big Tech, you know disruption’s the name of the game. For some reason, we’re betting that this applies to techno too, and we feel the latest EP from Cora Novoa is a game-changer on the scale of Windows Vista.

Hot off appearing on the cover of of Mixmag Spain (beating out Spanish Steve Aoki for the honor), the Barcelona-based producer, creative director and researcher follows up her killer 2020 Twin Turbo release, Black Out, with Two Faces, which cements her place as one of the major artists populating today’s techno landscape, which itself is made of cement. These five massive tracks evoke the deep space claustrophobia of consumer-grade interplanetary travel, exporting our emotional intelligence and expert playlist curation to grateful distant worlds. This is the sound of the logical endpoint of all rave culture, where DJs will be replaced by an app you beg to not cut the oxygen.

Two Faces is packaged with a custom Instagram face filter, which satisfies a longtime mandate from label management to make our audience better-looking. Turbo will also be producing a T-shirt for the release, aimed at those who dare to walk between two worlds, navigating the virtual/analog divide with the grace and artistry of a tightrope dancer. The EP also marks the occasion of Turbo’s first NFT, a combination of the face filter and artwork. Sold on Foundation, it will instantly become the least fungible thing you will ever own, and a possible bargaining chip to offer the AI that’s been blackmailing you. Please note that Tiga is under the impression that NFTs are pronounced “Nifty’s” so do not try to disabuse him of this notion the next time he’s in your town to tear up a local street festival. COS_MOS welcome Argentinian Nehuen for their next EP. The Barcelona based artist makes uncompromising dancefloor tracks and co­-runs the Classicworks label with Cardopusher. This time out he offers four more fierce cuts that cannot fail to get the attention of the club.
‘Call Him’ is the raw and frazzled opener, with twisted synth lines and heavy mid tempo drums making for a rugged and dystopian groove. It’s perfectly nasty stuff, while ‘Intenseo’ is a whacked out electro cut with punchy drum programming and ghoulish machine sounds. ‘Personal Conflict’ has crunchy hits and a slippery electro bassline all coated in reverb and sci­fi effects, and last of all ‘Las Maquinas’ has wild hits and spraying metal synths all tied to a skeletal electro­funk bassline that will add up to real chaos on the floor.

DJ Pierre’s seminal Afro Acid welcomes a host of contemporary talents to remix Joyce Muniz including Oliver Dollar & Stefan Braatz, Alinka, Lauren Flax and Hannah Holland. The original single landed earlier this year and did plenty of damage around the world.

It is the German pairing of Oliver Dollar & Stefan Braatz who go first. The former is a master of sample heavy house with real heart, and often collaborates with Braatz. Here they offer a prickly version with chattery Chicago claps and bouncing drums and bass that will energise any set in style. Chicago native Alinka is next and is known for her weird and idiosyncratic take on house on labels like Crosstown, Classic and her own Twirl. She imbues her music with the spirit and history of the Windy City and here layers in acid flashes and machine gun like lasers that make
for a brilliantly dark and involving groove.

Lauren Flax comes from Detroit by way of Brooklyn and has worked with the likes of Little Boots and Tricky, DJed at Panorama Bar and released her jack tracks on cult labels like Unknown to the Unknown. Here she fantastically builds the pressure with gliding hi hats that get under your skin as the fat bass props up the libidinous and seductive vocals and acid twitches. Last of all, UK sensation Hannah Holland is a queen of bass heavy sounds and brings that to her remix, which is a slick and kinetic track of prickly drums, acid stabs and freaky synth work.

This is a powerful package of fresh and forward looking house music.
