Not only a musical reinterpretation, but a “cinematic audiobook” of the 1996 cult film ‘Al Nom Fil Assal’: ‘Risala Min Shahed Ayan’ is a sample-based album by Osman Arabi as Ain Horus.

Osman Arabi launches his newest project Ain Horus (Arabic: عین حورس, The Eye of Horus) with the 18-track album ‘Risala Min Shahed Ayan’ (Arabic: رسالة من شاھد عیان, “A Letter From An Eyewitness”) on Lebanese experimental label Modular Mind.

The entire album consists of samples and sounds from the 1996 Egyptian cult film ‘Al Nom Fil Assal’ (Arabic: النوم فى العسل, English: “A Deep Sleep” or “Sweet Oblivion”). The satire features legendary comedian Adel Emam, directed by the great Sharif Arafa and scored by Omar Khayrat, the film tackles topics like sexual impotence, corruption, ignorance and frustration in Egyptian society which led it to become one of a kind audio-visual experience in the Arab world.

Osman Arabi describes the format of his album as an “18-track cinematic audiobook”. The artist draws all the sonic elements from the film that he processes, arranges and unfolds like scenes from a childhood memory. Creating a so-called cinematic audiobook is Arabi’s approach to the remains of a forgotten pan-Arabic cultural phenomenon that he intends to modernize in his own musical language. Within the composition, he transforms each track into a scene. His musical reinterpretation is an homage to the very essence of the film that revolves around the question: What does the spirit of a world that has gone mad look like?

Ain Horus’ debut on Modular Mind will be released on April 2nd, 2023. The 18-track album will be released on all digital platforms and as a limited edition cassette tape.

Osman Arabi is a guitarist, composer, producer and sound designer from El-Mina, Tripoli, Lebanon, who lives and works in Berlin. A unique figure in the international noise and industrial music scene, Arabi is especially known for pioneering noise and black metal waves in Lebanon in the early 2000’s.

His work elicits images of desolate industrial landscapes and shamanistic rites. From his beginnings in black metal, Arabi has progressed through different genres, such as dark ambient, industrial, tribal, psychedelic, electro-acoustic, power electronics and noise. His many projects have included Seeker, Kafan, Veinen, Shamanic Death Trance, The Ritual Inclusion Of Code, 20.SV, as well as nihilist Dutch collective Stalaggh. In 2000, Arabi stopped performing live -- vanishing into the underground, not resurfacing until 2009. For the past decade, Arabi has been developing -- in complete secrecy -- his "occult guitar" playing, based on the sigil work of Austin Osman Spare.

A follow up to his ‘Downtown’ release on Bristol Normcore in 2022, This no-holes-barred, raw EP full of debauchery and bane stands fast as a praxis against the rotting establishment.

The Edit was made some time ago, this track has 2 official edits, one made by the label released with their box version of Cal Ranch's EP, and a long original version by the artist, we like both but we figured out we could have one edit with our favourite moments of this piece, i made it to be played in some concerts and now I'm sharing here in the cloud.

Hebron, occupied Palestinian territories – On February 25 1994, a US-born Israeli military physician walked into the Ibrahimi mosque in Hebron armed with a Galil assault rifle. It was early morning during the holy month of Ramadan, and hundreds of Palestinians were crammed inside, bowed in prayer.

Baruch Goldstein, who had emigrated to Israel in 1983, lived in the Kiryat Arba settlement on the outskirts of the city. As worshippers kneeled, Goldstein opened fire. He reloaded at least once, continuing his barrage for as long as possible before finally being overpowered and eventually beaten to death. By the time he was stopped, 29 worshippers were killed, and more than a hundred had been injured.

The Israeli government immediately released a statement condemning the act and stating that Goldstein acted alone and was psychologically disturbed.

Twenty years later, Palestinians are carrying out memorial events and Hebron’s settlers are preparing celebratory pilgrimages to Goldstein’s shrine inside Kiryat Arba.

Muslims and Jews alike believe that the building houses the earthly remains of the religious patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca and Leah, and the complex is divided between Jewish and Muslim areas. 

The massacre was widely reported in the international media – but many Palestinians here continue believe that the full story has never been told.




The 29 people killed inside the mosque were not the only “martyrs” that day. Locals estimate the final number of deaths at between 50 and 70 – and an estimated 250 were injured over the course of the day. After the initial attack inside the mosque, more Palestinians were killed by the Israeli army during protests outside the mosque, outside Hebron’s Ahli hospital, and even in the local cemetery as the dead were being buried.

Some survivors of the massacre also report that they were shot by a second gunman inside the mosque, and claim that this was a planned attack of which the Israeli military was aware in advance. None here believe the official story of Goldstein acting entirely alone in a fit of madness.

The Israelis ordered 520 businesses to close overnight, and they remain shuttered to this day. Shuhaha Street, the main road through town, was later sealed off.

“The only way to be on this road is to be an Israeli or a foreigner,” said Al Jazeera’s Alan Fisher. “For Palestinians, this is a no-go area.”
