The journey continues… Victor Calderone and Nicole Moudaber’s creative collaborations develop from the DJ booth and studio as Victor makes his debut on Nicole’s MOOD. Following major outings on Intec and Drumcode in recent years, he returns with three more dynamic techno compositions tailored specifically for the later night deep mix sessions. And if that’s not enough, the package also includes an exceptional remix from Ray Kajioka.

‘Parallel’ instantly hits with dubby reflective synth insistency. But the deeper you dive, the more you realise how much groove the drums carry as they switch and skip along with unrelenting pressure. The groove is extended by one of Germany’s most respected longstanding pioneers Ray Kajioka who re-textures the riff with much more of a darker, grittier sound and thicker, grainier drums to incredible effect.  

Deeper we dive again for two more examples of Victor’s creative dexterity and sonic scope: “The Difference” is a rolling workout that ignites with a deep smouldering aesthetic before gradually adding layers of atmospheric pressure, percussive hypnosis and subtle cosmic touches while “Zenith” shows Calderone at his most cinematic… What begins as a classic foggy midnight graveyard stroll suddenly turns into something much more sparse, spiky and full suspense. 

A dramatic way to end a far-reaching, full-vision EP. The journey doesn’t stop here….

Pig & Dan’s trend setting label Elevate signs contemporary talent Joran Van Pol for its next EP.

After letting Dubfire and Richie Hawtin fight it out to sign his first release, Joran van Pol has climbed to the very top of the techno tree. The Dutchman is now a mainstay at vital festivals from Awakenings to Tomorrowland and runs his own FADE label. His cinematic Techno sound is perfect for big rooms, and that is played out across three
brilliant new tracks on Elevate.

First up is ‘Outsider’, a brilliantly taught and tense roller with piston like drums and hits that are made for marching to. Rumbling bass speaks of a dystopian wasteland and searching synths survey the horizon in menacing fashion as the tension continues to build.
Also keeping you locked throughout is ‘Captured’, an eerie track with hypnotic drums and unsettling sirens that rise up and down and make for haunting listening. It’s a real mind melter.

Last but not least, the masterful ’Remember’ is built on rubbery, ticking and minimal drums with skittish claps and icy hi-hats all peeling off the groove as dark vocals dip in and out. It’s economical but efficient techno that is hugely evocative.

Once again here van Pol asserts himself as one of techno’s key players with a trio of terrific tracks.

If you want a snapshot of where techno stands in any given year, and a preview of where it’s headed, look no further than Drumcode’s A-Sides compilation. Since 2012 it has marked the label debuts of countless vital Drumcode artists and affiliates, from Layton Giordani, Wehbba and Boxia, to Amelie Lens and ANNA, no less. Every year, new names are unearthed, tried and true techno contributors serve up their best, and icons of the industry land their debut on Adam Beyer’s storied label.

The 2020 edition hits with 13 tracks, eight coming from label debutants. There’s Eats Everything searing rave bomb ‘Organico’ and Dubfire’s ice-cool electro offering ‘Deadbug’, both artists landing their maiden contributions to DC after long affiliations with Beyer. With three EPs in less than two years on Truesoul, Oscar L steps up to DC, showing the breadth of his sound palette with a soaring, synth-laden gem ‘Dark Fate’. Belgians Joyhauser featured at last year’s Drumcode Festival paving the way for ‘Fierceness’, a beautiful melody-drenched cut befitting their DC cap. Anfisa Letyago is another first timer and shows why she’s one of the scene’s most highly touted new artists with the brooding beast ‘Are You In’. A growing label favourite, Juliet Fox follows up ‘Was Beautiful’, her superb track on last year’s A-Sides, with ‘Our Fantasy’, reinforcing her skill for crafting anthemic techno compositions. Thomas Schumacher & Victor Ruiz link and the result is ‘Intuit’, a sleek futuristic roller that hits you square between the eyes. Other highlights come from longtime Drumcode cohorts Reset Robot and Harvey McKay, who both dish up premium works, reinforcing their classy productions nous.
