The MCT mix series was started to give an outlet for our friends and family cult members to showcase music from a chosen place that they drew inspiration from. Often one that influenced the formation of the artist that they are today. 
In short we would like for our friends to take you on a musical tour of this incredible world that we live in. From the mystical mountains of the Andes, through the barrios of Colombia and across the deep Atlantic sea, splashing into the bodies of water covering Canada, launching into the skies above the vast outback of Australia...and far far beyond. 
At the conclusion we will have 24 mixes that will ignite that perfect 24 hour party of any given zone... and take you on own our specially curated rhythmic trek across this place we call EARTH.   

MCT : Multi Culti Travellers

Beginning on this auspicious day of super moons, solar eclipses, equinoxes and general cosmic renewal, we present the first in a series of 24 mixes that will take you around the world. Each one hour mix will be inspired by a specific location on this very earth, mixed by a different artist who will also release an accompanying ep with us. So much alignment. We begin this epic journey with Irish ‘Kleine Reise’ mystic Peter Power, who will soak us deep in the jungle of his personal vibe, 60 dripping minutes borne from ‘The Rainforests of Indonesia.’ Let the journey begin. Japan's Dj Ground aka Dj Grount aka Chillmountain joins the Multi Culti Travellers and puts together a beautiful selection of sounds that represent the Earthenware of Osaka. He says of the mix :

I was born in Lichtenberg, East Berlin, in 1977. Lichtenberg looked grey and dull and the only sightseeing attraction might well have been the Stasi headquarter. In the morning, the agents of the Stasi went to their office while I went to school. Once a week we had to sing our communist leads with our white shirts and little „pioneers“ scarves tied around our neck. 
Luckily, it wasn’t the only soundtrack of my youth. When I came back home, I could switch on the radio, tune in on the waves from the west and let my imagination travel to other places. I was not allowed to take a plane to the UK or to the US but in my own young mind, I could fly way further than that. I used to record all the music from the radio on my double tape deck. They were my first mixes. Except that at the time, I was the only one dancing to them in my 12m² bedroom. 

The mix I’m sharing here represents my first steps into the world of dance music, surrounded by the concrete of my neighborhood and printed on the last breathes of the Cold War. Some tracks might sound „cheesy“ today, but for me, at the time, all I could hear in them was this beat, this beat that makes you wanna have a good time, this beat that makes you wanna be free.

MCT-10 - Sascha Funke - Youth In Lichtenberg

Having grown up with folk musics from around the world, Cain is one artist who might be hard to pigeon-hole into anyone one particular background… The Scottish man has a flair for all things off-the beaten track and down the pentatonic scale-trail.

This mix is a collection of Pakistani and Indian music that has shaped some of his musical upbringings. From Nusrat's rousing Qawwali to soothing Ragas, Celtic-sounding Rajasthani Dhoad gypsy songs to ancient Dhrupads, there is a wide range of musical heads to bobble around with. 

The predominately traditional mix - being folk, Qawwali, Karnatic and classical music paints a journey travelling from Pakistan, through the lands of Rajasthan which are inhabited by beautiful cobras, through to Southern India.

For the next stop in the MCT series Mytron & Ofofo blast us through the great British blockchain of culture that is Ridley Road market. 

This market place has been thriving in the centre of Dalston since 1880, playing a key role in the development of the multi-cultural heart that keeps this urban environment alive, where music mutates to the constant march of time, while passersby sip tea and smoke ganja.

Step off the underground and join us as we take a trip through the stalls and stands in London's land of life and energy.

MCT-13 - Mytron & Ofofo - Ridley Road Market

Akimbo, founder of Seoul-based label Tonal Unity, lives by Multi Culti ideals, a man brave enough to seek adventure, understanding and love outside his native land. This mix takes us on a journey to his adopted home. Let his description and the sounds take you away:

"Spirits of the Korean Han (恨)"

The character at the end is hanja for the term "Han", here inserted for clarity, as the Korean character referring to the same concept (한) has multiple meanings. 

Han is a concept that has no English equivalent. It runs through the Korean traditional arts, and the soul of the Korean nation as a whole. An oversimplification of this concept would be "the blues", but as it is quite complex, I won't attempt to fully explain it here. Han connects deeply with Korean character, which is one of resilience and intensity. Their traditional music reaches heights of beauty, sorrow, and fury. It is defiant, spiritual, spine-tingling, and trance-inducing stuff. 

Modern Korea is a place of juxtaposition. Ancient temples are tucked in between skyscrapers. Teens and tourists ride the waves of Hallyu trends while shamans lead extreme weeklong rituals in the mountains. Club kids in Seoul dance all night to banging techno (no drugs btw), while groups of itinerant performers travel the countryside in the spirit of the namsadang, much unchanged for hundreds of years. 

This mix is meant to be an introduction to Korean sounds, while also attempting to connect them in context with other East Asian tribal traditions and ritualistic electronics.

The Korean names have been romanized for this tracklist, but it can often be difficult to find the music by searching in English. For the original Korean text, let me know in the comments.

This mix is dedicated to all the gorgeous people, open minded musicians and instrument makers, who overwhelmed me with Atai and were willed to teach me something about Gnawa. Not to mention the faboulous record stores in Casablanca, Rabat, Ouazazarte, Marrakesh and those hidden sellers, who suddenly appeared, when i lost my bearings in the Souq.

The mix contains old vinyls and cassettes, which are rounded up with contemporary digital releases and reissues. Pitched down darbouka tapes, traditional orchestra, modern gnawa, fusion, rock, miserable conditioned pop cassettes and some algerian raï. Featuring labels like boussiphone, koutobiaphone, disque gam, casaphone, radio martiko, nabilophone and so on…

MCT-16 - Show Kati - A Guide Across The Atlas Range

The latest trip comes from Archive Digital, a human well versed in curating musical experiences that delve far beyond the the borders of the visceral... 

This time, taking cues from Guadeloupe, part of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean. The 'island state of mind' rubs you down with a litre of coconut oil and turns the party up to 50 degrees centigrade.

Affectionately known as "Gwadada" by the local population, its an exotic escape soaked in French and creole customs, a far cry from the concrete jungle of London where the 'Archive D...' archives his sounds.

🇮🇹 Some words about the mix from Marco 🇮🇹

The mixtape faces the mediterranean coasts of the southern Italy, the place where I was born and where now I’m based. It’s a mix of sounds, musics and tunes coming from that area, but it’s also a time-travel through the Arabic, Persian and African dominations and their musical influences - typical all over the southern due to the Italy's geographic position in the center of the Mediterranean Sea. Also Greek and Slavic migration created new ethic group since the 15th century, such as Arbëreshë, the Albanians of Italy. 

My home country (Salento) was part of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (1816-1861), the largest state of Italy before the unification, it was formed as a union of the Kingdom of Sicily and the Kingdom of Naples. Here life and music are rich in folklore, religion, philosophy and esotericism. Sun makes very hot summers and creates human warmth and rare chemistries. Sea does everything else! 

The traditional southern Italian music is Tarantella, accompanied by tambourines. It’s connected within the Tarantism, a sort of ritual - with ancient roots in the Greek mythology - during which an hysterical and agitated victim of a tarantula spider bite had to start a frenetic dance with appropriate music to be revived and treated. Music transported the victim in a 'trance' until exhaustion and it appeared to be the only way of combating that strange disease. Another musical tradition in Southern Italy is the zampogna, a form of bagpipe originally played by the shepherds during the farm works.
