Away from the dancefloors, Sydney’s Angophora continues the journey they started on Ken Oath Records with their debut album 'Scenes'. Now the Australian duo releases their second album 'Together' on Kenneth Bager's label Music For Dreams. 

Resting pulses and humid atmospherics frame gentle percussion, warm synth work and tasteful guitar licks that take a note from the Balearic handbook but remain clear in their appreciation and respect for the sounds and colours of Australian nature. Music best listened with the ancient ochres of the Australian outback in view. So seamlessly will the sonic palette of Scenes fit your surroundings, you’ll begin to question whether or not these gentle surroundings are being emitted from the wax spinning on your plate or Eucalypts whirring in the wind around you.

This episode takes us to Latin America to the popular sound of cumbia. The traditional folk dance draws its origins from African rhythms that were established by colonial slaves in Colombia, later mixed with indigenous and Spanish elements from there and spread further. Our show travels from 1954 to 2019 through Colombia, Peru & Panama where this music is still popular today. Mainly represented, the label 'Discos Fuentes' the powerhouse of Colombian music, still highly sought after by record collectors today. Plus the legendary groups Los Mirlos & Los Destellos from Peru along with sunny highlights from Panama.

Dreems is the solo project of Sydney DJ Angus Gruzman – a man who can fairly claim responsibility for inspiring kids towards the dance floor for over a decade. As Gus Da Hoodrat, he was a long-serving member of the Bang Gang party crew and he’s ensuring the good times continue with his involvement in the Motorik label and the regular parties they throw. 

His mix for i-D is the kind of journey that only someone with an impressively eclectic record collection could take you on. Angus describes it as a “mix that was made with a certain rug in mind (it knows who it is). There was no more than a chair and a packet of empty crisps on the rug that I was playing to that evening. It's an intimate mix formulated in my mind for the open space of your mind. It’s 100% vinyl, 100% vibe and 100% me on the Persian rugs.”

YAYA was a concept label by Joe Mubare and Mark Polscher founded in 1989 and only released three records by Votu, One Tounge and Joe Mubare himself. When I first stumbled across this special music, I instantly felt the desire to create a mix around it. So I started to dig through my collection to search for records with this transcendental yet mystical new-age-vibe, which the YAYA records are spreading. It turned out to get a really ambitious project - a concept mix to worship a concept label.

The first take of this mix was recorded in December 2018 - three months later I'm more than happy to present this mix as a tribute to YAYA. I'm pretty optimistic that I will still like this mix when I'm old and grey.
