Our latest premiere comes from Copenhagen’s Creak Inc. 5 releases deep into the world of jazzed up electronic music - having featured the laid-back house grooves of Terry Tester, break-beat anthems of Kaidi Tetham, to the smoothest rap and r&b from Copenhagen’s own NATKAT - it’s safe to say Creak Inc. have proven themselves a go-to address for all lovers of jazz-tinged electronics.

Next up on the label is newcomer Nejrup’s debut EP. But don’t let the word debut fool you into thinking this EP is anything short of musical mastery. This is the kind of debut EP that feels as though it’s been in the works for half a lifetime, boasting remarkable instrumentation, as well as meticulous production and sound-design. Nejrup’s three original tracks, and a stellar remix by K15 - a master of all things soulful - leave little to be desired. Our favourite off the EP is the A2. Calm Cacophony kicks off as 16th hihats set a steady pace, rhodes harmonies and touching synth melodies pull at your heartstrings. Through the calm emerges a tight groove, and drums and synthesised arpeggios erupt in an emotional climax. The energy ebbs and swells, building up for a final crescendo, then disappearing as quickly as it came, and leaving you dizzy in it’s wake.

For us, Calm Cacophony ticks all the boxes: beautiful harmony, virtuosic musicianship, high emotion and crisp production. Our only critique would be the name, as there’s sure to be little cacophony to be found anywhere that Nejrup could possibly sway! Nejrup bursts onto the scene with an EP that’s sure to turn some heads, and we definitely can’t wait to hear what else he has in store for us. Manda is out April 27th on Creak Inc. Buy it here.

Joris Feiertag is on a roll right now. After releasing the much-praised EP «Severance» at the beginning of the year, the producer from Utrecht is about to up the ante. «Heal» is the name of his second work on mid-length this year. This time he dedicates himself again to merge different genres and to break up gridlocked categories over the span of four tracks. It’s of course the rhythm that determines the beat as well as the mood of all of his compositions. «Bliss» floats vaguely rushed but leisurely joyful at the same time through unknown sceneries and surprises with exotic sounds and lots of inspiring ideas without turning too much left field at any time at all. 

On the opening track «Without You» it’s a dashing beat again that defines this sparkling pop song contrary to the current mainstream. It’s the outstanding voice of Colin Lee Vermeulen that works almost like another instrument. 

Whereas on «Hold Your Own» the rhythm alternates between breakbeat and dub reggae displaying impressing again how skilled the arranger and producer Joris Feiertag is. Here we have the majestic tonsils of UK based singer Oli Hannaford (with whom Feiertag has worked on several projects before) that lifts the song to higher grounds.

The 4th LP from Banoffee Pies Records comes in the form of a debut album from Tom Ellis' new live ensemble, Soulstatejazz. The release titled "Annwn", is the result of a 3 day improvisation at Malt Barn studio, in the beautiful Nanerth Valley in mid Wales, forming a 6 track album of hybrid live/electronic jazz-house. The group, who first performed at Freerotation Festival as a morning journey, soon evolved into a flowing ensemble of musicians brought together by one of the core residents at the festival. With Tom Ellis (Bass, Drums, Percussion & Production), Mark Hand (Fender Rhodes & Moog), Michiel Renger (Tenor Sax) and Dave Elson (homemade Reaktor & Ableton instruments & FX) as the main backline of the band, the LP also features artists and residents connected to Freerotation and Malt Barn studio.

In Welsh folk law it was said "Annwn" [an:un] - "The Otherwold", was a world of delights and beauty located on an island or beneath the earth. A place of eternal youth and good, where food and fair health remained ever abundant as the wage of death and disease fell to it's way side. Commonly identifying in Welsh mythology as an afterlife of paradise.

We are exited to share this beautiful piece of music AND positive lesson in mindfulness from kora musician and electronic experimenter, John Haycock, featuring a poem about anxiety, written and read by author and councillor Joshua Fletcher. We are also proud to premiere this incredible video, animated by graphic designer Finn Black. 

John Haycock is one of four artists who recently won the Steve Reid Foundation’s prestigious inNOVAtion award for forward thinking emerging talent.  The Foundation, set up by Gilles Peterson, helps artists in need due to injury or illness, as well as providing mentorship and small financial grants for emerging talent. Trustees include Gilles himself, Kieran Hebden (Four Tet), Sam Shepherd (Floating Points), Nick Woodmansey (Emanative), and Simon Goffe (Brownswood Recordings) amongst others.

John is a multi instrumentalist live looping artist passionate about affecting acoustic sounds with electronics. John’s primary instrument is the West African Kora (21 string Harp). He runs it through a series of electronic devices creating lush soundscapes & solid beats, before overlapping them with woodwind instruments.

As part of John’s mentorship from the Foundation he is working closely with Nick Emanative who is mixing / co-producing a forthcoming EP and assisting with its vinyl release. Previous inNOVAtion Awardee Sarathy Korwar (winner of the Aim Awards Best Independent Album award 2020 for the album ‘More Arriving’) has also contributed his talents to this project and will feature on a couple of tracks, whilst also helping to see its release.

You can hear him contributing words of positive mindfulness to Morning Mari’s show every Monday morning on Worldwide FM. Earlier this year the Aussie producer Zen In Space dropped his debut album Earth Tones on Pharmaceutical Audio, a record label but know primarily as a trespass series of gatherings occurring in industrial/demolition sites in urban Australia. 

In the follow up rework project Allysha Joy strips back 'Jannali' in almost emancipatory fashion, creating an ethereal warmth from a groove sojourned in a state of vocal confession.
