As I explained in last year’s mix (link), surviving a Montreal is no joke: winters here average anywhere from -20 to -30, but the most painful part is that it last 5 months. Needless to say, Spring has a bit of extra magic to it when you’ve suffered so much for it.

When I sat down and started doing research for the spring mix last year I quickly realized how many spring-themed albums and songs there are. My focus with “IT HAPPENS EVERY SPRING” is to try and capture the glorious feeling of opening up your windows and doors for the first time in months. Last years’ mix had a more upbeat feel but this year it was impossible for me to replicate that vibe because of what i’ve been going through these past few months. This year’s mix features some cheerful songs as well as some sad ones too but all of them are beautiful and inspiring in their way. More importantly, it’s music that is helping me through some tough times.

Sample sourcing is one of my biggest joys in life. It has expanded my musical taste, knowledge & library. It’s magical puzzling together the original sample used in a song & hearing the inspiration behind it. A soulful sample over hard-hitting drums paired with a top-tier verse moves me in a way nothing else can. I’ve discovered so many amazing songs & artists by searching for samples like this one here. I love when the original song is just as amazing as the sampled one, if not better. Some critics try to knock sampling & say it’s not a skillful art form, but I strongly disagree. Not even sure where Hip-Hop would be without sampling. It takes lots of effort, skill, time & a good ear to find the right song, cut it, flip it, loop it & turn it into something new.

It’s always a mixed feeling listening to the lyrics on this. They equally make you laugh but also make you cringe and when Jemini comes in with the lines about Al Green at the end....ouch! Musically, I’ve put in some club friendly 100BPM drums and a rolling & hypnotic bassline.

Following on from his critically acclaimed 2019 solo album Poison Fruit, Azymuth’s iconic drummer Ivan ‘Mamão’ Conti returns with ‘Katmandu’, a new release from the Poison Fruit project. Though it was recorded and mixed in the same sessions, ‘Katmandu’ was mysteriously omitted by Mamão from the Poison Fruit album, either accidentally or on purpose, he’s not quite sure. What is for sure is that it’s one of the most potent poison grooves of them all.

The original mix, produced by Daniel Maunick, accompanies remixes from three of mainland Europe’s finest DJ/producer combos in the game, iconic German nu-jazz collective Jazzanova, MCDE Recordings & Faces Records’ Pablo Valentino, and Croatian house veteran Eddy Ramich with assistance from Zagreb duo Jan Kinčl & Regis Kattie.

This EP is the second in a series of limited edition dance 12”s celebrating 25 years of Far Out Recordings and is housed in a special sleeve which uses the label’s original semiquaver logo from 1994.

In 2017, NYC producer/guitarist Rich Bennett and Paris based Italian Argentine singer/songwriter Mari Rosa started sharing tunes with each other across the pond. Basking in the sounds of Lô Borges, Elis Regina, Steely Dan, and a playlist of early 80s roller rink disco, felt like a form of solace amidst the tense and changing culture around the world. It wasn’t long before the pair decided to write and record some tunes of their own, which in their own words created “a sound that will make you want to lace up your rollerskates”

Sung in Portuguese, the breezy lounge-funk stepper ‘Music Aqui’ cooks up blissful Brazilian beach boogie vibes, and the Spanish sung post-disco love jam ‘Com Tu Amor’ feels uncannily like an early 80s holy grail that’s never been sold on Discogs, it’s difficult to believe it was recorded only last year.
