I started by trying to find some source material; off to freesound.org. I liked stormpetrel's https://www.freesound.org/people/stormpetrel/sounds/173095/ (The sound of the Iceberg) but my computer crashed around halfway way through downloading the flac. Good enough.

Did the usual Junto pre-processing - noise reduction in Audacity to bring out some transients, Paulstretch to extract some tonal material. I played with some promising loops in reaper, vocoding the tonal material against some ice noise. That was then fed through lipredemuco, with the reconstruction lattice filter's coefficients rotated to make some synthetic whining windy sounds.

Then for no particular reason - because I really had planned to make the entire piece from the one sound sourced from freesound - I opened up Geist and loaded in some stock drum hits and noodled around with that for a bit. Alchemy and a self-resonant Strobe both use the original iceberg source material, but having already corrupted the original ambient piece, it was hard to resist playing (albeit pretty conservatively) with Oddity. 

As is often the case, it didn't work out as I expected and I feel I'd like to develop it more, but there will not be the time and now is probably a good time to wrap it up. That said, I think I've spent more time trying (pretty unsuccessfully) to name the thing than actually writing it. In the end, the rather unremarkable "burrowing into ice" is I guess reference to Junji Ito's Enigma of the Amigara Fault wherein people are inexorably drawn to a newly revealed geological formation with human shaped holes, find the one that fits, crawl into it, and die.

**Production Notes**

A track containing only sine waves and turntable surface noise ([https://freesound.org/people/lollosound/sounds/387005/]), that was quite a challenge!

I pitched, rearranged and chopped up the turntable sound to get a rhythmic track. 

All the sines are coming from Ableton’s Operator. To get some musical variation, I used plain vanilla, 8-bit and 4-bit sine waves plus a bunch of effects.  

Btw, if you can whistle the mid-part tune in its original tempo, I’ll provide you with an award ;-)

**Disquiet Junto Project 0326: Wave Turntable**

In collaboration with composer Danny Clay, make music for his exhibit with artist Jon Fischer using only sine waves and turntable surface noise.

Step 1: Tracks in this project will be played as part of a free event in San Francisco at the McEvoy Foundation for the Arts (mcevoyarts.org) on Saturday, April 7, 2018, for an exhibit by composer Danny Clay (dclaymusic.com) and artist Jon Fischer (feather2pixels.com). The project was developed in collaboration with Clay. Before proceeding, consider the sort of music that might be conducive as partially-heard, partially-background music for an art event.

Step 2: Compose a short piece of music using only sine waves and the surface sounds of vinyl played on a turntable. Those two sources are inspirations for the Clay/Fischer exhibit. (The cover image to this project shows some of Fischer’s turntable art.)

Six More Important Steps When Your Track Is Done:

Step 1: Include “disquiet0326” (no spaces or quotation marks) in the name of your track.

Step 2: If your audio-hosting platform allows for tags, be sure to also include the project tag “disquiet0326” (no spaces or quotation marks). If you’re posting on SoundCloud in particular, this is essential to subsequent location of tracks for the creation a project playlist.

Step 3: Upload your track. It is helpful but not essential that you use SoundCloud to host your track.

Step 4: Please consider posting your track in the following discussion thread at llllllll.co:
