Haiku poetry and music.

Naviar Haiku is a music project in which artists are invited to make new music inspired by a weekly assigned haiku poem. Participation is free and there are no limitations in the songs’ length or genre.

Haiku is a traditional and short form of Japanese poetry consisting of three lines: it’s about moments of objective experience which lead to deeper considerations about life and nature. The juxtaposition of two images or ideas and the consequent creation of a gap in the imagery gives the reader (or, in this case, the musician) the chance to complete the poem with his/her own interpretation.

This project is about expanding the meaning of a poem beyond its words, and the active role of the reader in haiku poetry, unique in the literary realm, is what inspired this project.

Disquiet Junto Project 0117: Naviar Junto Haiku

This week’s project involves members of the Disquiet Junto participating in another music-making community: the Naviar Haiku Project. Already members of the Junto have joined in the Naviar, and this is an opportunity to add to those ranks. Each week participants in the Naviar Haiku Project compose original pieces of music in response to a shared, provided haiku. The following are the steps for this week.

Step 1: This is the haiku for the 12th Naviar Haiku project entry:

Step 2: Compose an original piece of music in response.

Step 3: Upload the file to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud and describe your approach and process in the text field associated with the track.

obsidian [naviarhaiku012 – they encounter / disquiet0117-naviarjunto]

I shouldn't but I had to….I'm writing a paper to conclude my studies at DIEM, Denmark for a degree in Electronic Music Composition - but this assignment sounded to good  when it landed in my inbox this morning...
I set out, as I had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted the track to sound like, and it wouldn't take long (did someone say naive?). I also wanted to try out my new interface for transferring digital audio from my iPad to my DAW - I ended up not using an sounds from the iPad, but anyhow I had fun trying and the excuse for working on this piece sounded good in my ears….What I did do, was using a couple of recordings of ice and snow, and a recording of a piano at a local thrift shop…and myself whispering the haiku. The ice and snow recordings where eq'ed a bit the piano went through Ambient a couple of times and once through a looper/delay in Reaktor. The final result is pretty close to what I thought of, before I started - as always things changed once I started experimenting with the material…but thats okay.

**Production Notes**

"Cathedral of ice?" Well, this had to be a drone. 

The base is an older piece, heavily filtered and treated. Added some Operator Sine bass here and there. The Pianos are from Boscomac (great free Reaktor stuff over there!) and the synth is Ye Good Ol’ Animoog on the iPhone - weeeee! Finally there were some last touches woth my new toy, a shortwave radio. 

Composing, arranging and mixing took 3 hours. Thanks for listening!

Creek [disquiet0117-naviarjunto]

I started by trying to find some source material; off to freesound.org. I liked stormpetrel's https://www.freesound.org/people/stormpetrel/sounds/173095/ (The sound of the Iceberg) but my computer crashed around halfway way through downloading the flac. Good enough.

Did the usual Junto pre-processing - noise reduction in Audacity to bring out some transients, Paulstretch to extract some tonal material. I played with some promising loops in reaper, vocoding the tonal material against some ice noise. That was then fed through lipredemuco, with the reconstruction lattice filter's coefficients rotated to make some synthetic whining windy sounds.

Then for no particular reason - because I really had planned to make the entire piece from the one sound sourced from freesound - I opened up Geist and loaded in some stock drum hits and noodled around with that for a bit. Alchemy and a self-resonant Strobe both use the original iceberg source material, but having already corrupted the original ambient piece, it was hard to resist playing (albeit pretty conservatively) with Oddity. 

As is often the case, it didn't work out as I expected and I feel I'd like to develop it more, but there will not be the time and now is probably a good time to wrap it up. That said, I think I've spent more time trying (pretty unsuccessfully) to name the thing than actually writing it. In the end, the rather unremarkable "burrowing into ice" is I guess reference to Junji Ito's Enigma of the Amigara Fault wherein people are inexorably drawn to a newly revealed geological formation with human shaped holes, find the one that fits, crawl into it, and die.

Submission for disquiet0013. Got sidetracked over the weekend; didn't quite work out as planned.

vapour cloud and hanami [disquiet0013-wildup]

A pretty literal interpretation of the assignment.

Three tones - 450Hz, 540Hz, and 650Hz (oops). 
Three LFO amplitude modulations - 0.045Hz, 0.054Hz and 0.065Hz
Rendered, pitched down by two octaves then vocoded (99 band) as both carrier and modulator with original three tones.
Percussion is created using same three frequencies along with +/- 2 octaves of the same.
Two delay lines used with ratios corresponding to 450/540 and 650/540 relative to a two-beat synced delay line (not existing in the mix).

What I'd do differently if starting again: get the red correct at 600um. Convert wavelengths to frequencies. More high end. 

So, I tried doing that - substituted 500, 555 and 666 Hz for the tones and adjusted all the LFOs etc accordingly. Don't like it. Give up.

observational errors of the 3rd kind [disquiet0015-rgbinteract]

First sound - a pad from the opening to a song I wrote ~ 1996 (Colony). JX3P.
Second sound - recording I made on a car trip in the 80s as a kid with my tape recorder. Made into an ambient loopish rhythmic thing. 
Third sound - guitar I recorded sometime around 2005 or 2006

Although, since the guitar is basically just an excuse for noodly delay tricks, perhaps the delay is really the third sound. 

Not what I set out to do, but I don't want to miss another week and have another mostly finished track sitting around :)

three decades of ra [disquiet0018-3x3]

I wanted to make sure that all of the photo was used in some way and I wanted to make sure that 1) there would be something like a melody and 2) all of the melody would be determined by the photograph.

I thought it would be easy and fast to generate something with HTML5 WebAudio, and wouldn't it be fun to give that a try.

I started off looking at html5rocks demos with additive synthesizers and so on, but not having much time and wanting to keep it simple (while having fine control), I just generated the patterns from sine waves and then played back the result. For rhythm, I mixed in a loop created by scanning each horizontal line in the image (called "Noise") on the page since I was originally going to read the data as a raw PNG. So there is no live interactivity - but need not be either.

The results were pretty horrible to listen to, so I made it use loops in addition to the peak detection, and introduced a competition between the right side of the image with the left so that they would inhibit each other as the track progressed towards the middle, and each generation of pattern would compete against the previous pattern based on some arbitrary fitness function. Also limited the scale from equal temperament to pentatonic to a subset of pentatonic. Anyway, the fully operational program used to create the track is up at http://disquiet0019.mutagene.net along with view-sourceable code for the curious.

Finally, I recorded one of the produced tracks a number of times with different slide/glide and decay settings and put together a multitrack mix in Reaper with bass drum accompaniment (I figured a bass drum was fair game). With a bit of reverb and delay, but tried to stay away from too many outrageous dub fun. 

If I were starting again... I'd probably take a much less strict algorithmic approach. I had forgotten how hard it was to get algorithmic/generative music to sound "nice" at the same time without being overly simple.

reflections on an uneasy peace [disquiet0019-rojiura]

Choice of instruments was between guitar and taiko drum. Recording the taiko would make too much noise and be too difficult, I thought, given my setup - so I recorded the guitar on a portable recorder, then into my laptop. Not really comfortable with the guitar, so it took a while to get anything I thought I could use.

The decay process was supposed to be a crude simulation of an ACELP coded file being exposed to a lot of radiation over a long time - so just progressively flip bits here and there (or bytes - am lazy). I didn't really like the results, so instead of making the bytes random,the logic became:

if random.random() > 0.99:
    byte[position] = "sonicdecay"[position%10]

so over multiple iterations of the program, the payload of the file slowly turned into "sonicdecay" repeated ad nauseum.

After that, and perhaps misreading the original assignment, I thought it was fair game to pick and choose the artifacts I liked and use the rhythmically, or modified however, in addition to using the plain old corrupted decoded guitar sounds.

On top of that, I would have played the guitar again - but I didn't get another chance to sit down with the guitar, so I used some more (un corrupted) guitar from the original session, such as it was. 

It didn't really work out the way I had hoped - or the way I thought it might at the start, but it is done.
