This month’s Bright Patterns is a special tribute to Norm Chambers, who sadly passed away in November from a rare form of sinus cancer. Norm released a prolific amount of material under his own name and several other monikers over the years, such as Panabrite, Jürgen Müller, and Spiral Index. Following a two-hour tribute for 2021’s No Way Back comprised entirely of Norm’s music, this edition of Panabrite Patterns features four talented artists who connected deeply with the unique world imagined within his productions. William Selman presents a mix of selections they shared as favorites. Joshua Davison created six original tracks with Norm’s sonic pathways in mind. Matthew Patterson Curry crafted an extensive soundscape inspired by the simplicity and freedom of Norm’s rich output. The final portion is a hybrid mix from Jonas Reinhardt, who released the first edition of “The Encyclopedia of Civilizations” with Norm under his Jürgen Müller alias.

The aim for this mix was relatively straightforward: to present what I am doing with my ‘drone and bass’ DJ sets. In keeping with the forward thinking attitude of ‘Electronic Explorations’, I focused on presenting new music. Except for an old Conrad Schnitzler production I couldn’t resist including, basically everything else has been released in the last year. I also made an effort to include tracks from artists I think are exploring interesting territory. So if you like the mix, I strongly encourage you to look further into their discographies. The vast majority of the music here is easy to find in digital and other formats. Thanks to Rob for the kind invitation to contribute to this excellent series, to Wata Igarashi for mastering the mix, and to Sae Murakami for the picture.

The mix was recorded in one take on a Sunday afternoon in September 2015. It is entitled ‘music for nominal spaces’.

Korridor Live PA @ Under Bron, Stockholm 2015

After last week's bombastic world disco mix we’re turning inwards this week for Métron Musik Mixtape 028, to a colder, more cerebral space. Benoît Pioulard is the performing alias of Thomas Meluch, a Michigan born musician who has long held a deep fascination with aural textures, decay and field recordings. It’s his feel for texture that first drew me to his work nearly a decade ago when I heard the brilliant 2006 LP ‘Précis’, released on the legendary label Kranky, his first of five full length releases with the much vaunted Chicago based imprint. In truth it was the Kranky seal of approval that encouraged me to check out his work and I have been a fan ever since. 

His Métron Musik Mixtape opens and closes with his own productions and between those fabulous bookends Benoît crafts a beautiful blend of acoustic textures that longs to be played loud on headphones whilst lying somewhere particularly cosy. Flicking between meditative warm ambient drones, gritty static noise and a number of gorgeous vocal performances slipped in along the way, the American casts you from one realm to another seamlessly tying together different styles within his sonic palette. The vocal performances compiled here are truly excellent and provide a perfect counterpoint to the layers of sound that at times are so richly dense and emotive that it may leave you a little breathless.
