Extended Curations of Electronic Music Vol. 2

MUTEK Montréal is a multi-venue celebration of digital creativity held in the city’s cultural heart. 

Each year, the festival devotes itself platforming artists and thinkers working across electronic music, sound and visual arts, and invites them to come together in Canada’s second largest city for a sprawling six days of events.

Today, we’re presenting a two-part live mix series, recorded at the festival’s 24th edition earlier this year. This set from E-Saggila is a tantalising sneak peek of new material from the Iraq-born, Toronto-based DJ and producer, slated for release next year. A deliciously intense listen.

MUTEK Montréal is a multi-venue celebration of digital creativity held in the city’s cultural heart. 

Each year, the festival devotes itself to platforming artists and thinkers working across electronic music, sound and visual arts, and invites them to come together in Canada’s second largest city for a sprawling six days of events.

Today, we’re presenting a two-part live mix series, recorded at the festival’s 24th edition earlier this year. Every bit of bright and vibrant as its accompanying artwork, this recording from scene staple Jennifer Cardini harnesses the energy of festival season and transports it direct to your speakers. 

"MUTEK was the highlight of my summer, the energy in that beautiful room was amazing and it was an absolute honour to be invited to share the stage with so many artists I love," says Cardini. "Hope you can feel that in this mix." Serious fun guaranteed.

Live from MUTEK Montréal: Jennifer Cardini

MUTEK présente la performance live de l’artiste canadienne Carmen Jaci, enregistrée lors de la 24e édition du festival à Montréal en août dernier.

La performance de Carmen Jaci explore l'impact de la technologie sur nos identités à travers la visualisation de ses données personnelles collectées au fil des ans. Cette composition musicale hétéroclite et fantaisiste se tenant à la lisière du surréel a eu lieu en première canadienne au festival MUTEK le 23 août 2023. Initialement, c’est une performance qui combine le son avec les éléments visuels avec l'artiste Matthew Schoen.

Productrice et compositrice canadienne basée aux Pays-Bas, Carmen Jaci conçoit des univers fantaisistes où des sons caractéristiques de l’enfance s’enchevêtrent à ceux de la musique populaire et des compositions symphoniques. Exploitant les contrastes entre organicité et électronique, elle propose des assemblages hybrides où convergent instruments acoustiques, synthétiseurs et enregistrements vocaux. Ses projets récents s’inspirent des techniques de production en studio et des codes propres à la musique de danse que l’artiste déconstruit, donnant libre cours à son imagination.

With the performance Xtasy_Core, Gabo Barranco (also known as AAAA) is exploring the boundaries of melodic analog assaults, reaching the limits of trance state melodies and techno rumble rhythms embellished with glitches and post-IDM motives.

Open Reel Ensemble uses vintage reel-to-reel tape recorders as instruments by combining them with the latest technology and other unusual finds. They continue to explore new possibilities granted by reel-to-reel tape recorders by modifying their shapes and configurations. Open Reel Ensemble’s music is undoubtedly unique, but it is the spectacle – the cobbled creations and the physical performances – that makes each concert truly fascinating.

Back in 2016, Skee Mask and Zenker Brothers spontaneously attempted to play together at an afterparty in Prague, but after ten minutes the electricity failed. Two years later they finally had the opportunity to play a joint extended set for the first time - at Unsound Kraków 2018. The three DJs closed Saturday night in Hotel Forum with an expansive set building on adventurous forms of techno, jungle and broken beat, combining the collective interests of Ilian Tape. The set kicked off at 4am in the Ball Room.

Stenny is an essential producer in driving forward the sound of Ilian Tape. He has remained loyal to Ilian’s sonic aesthetic while carving his own musical path with incredible finesse. We can confirm, having seen him play at Herrensauna in Tresor and the Backdrop party in Newcastle’s Cosmic Ballroom, that his DJ sets are as exceptional as the records he releases. A versatile, adventurous and tough approach allow for constant forward momentum and a truly unrelenting energy on the dancefloor. Though the beats may be broken, his flow is anything but.
