Last Days - Close The Windows

Just yesterday I shared the news of a recently released album by Sinemis (that's Sine Buyuka) who is the founder of Injazero Records. And today I'm happy to follow up that announcement with a sequel release to the acclaimed Volutes (2020) by Snowdrops, which is a French-based chamber duo of Christine Ott and Mathieu Gabry. For this follow-up, they are joined by violist Anne-Irène Kempf, who also appears on this seventh and last piece on the album, which I am premiering for you today. Here, the piano, played by Ott, and the Rhodes in the hands of Gabry, create a soft fabric of acoustic harmonies that lift up the veil with strings and lush pads. It's a gentle track, which slowly evolves into an ever-expanding space where it disperses into the ether. "The piece develops a lot around repetitive but evolving motifs played by all three," says Gabry of music on "Mémoires Élementaires". "We are more and more distant from each other, but still connected. The viola played by Anne-irene takes the lead, and the Rhodes dissolves into a deep magma. The phrases slow down, and the reverberated space becomes larger." Perhaps the most cinematic out of the seven tracks on the album, the piece beautifully concludes this sonic painting which is a crossover genre, somewhere between modern classical, post-folk, and electro-acoustic music.

We interrupt our ongoing "Best of 2022" feature to take a breath and spend some time with [new] music. Music, after all, does not believe in time, it just becomes into existence when it's ready [sort of like us, but without the self-importance]. It doesn't know that there's a "schedule". It doesn't know that it may fade away before I bring it into existence once more, from the beginning. "Sounds arise from nothing and return to nothing." And so it's ready to be heard. Thus, today, I'm listening to a new piece by an Italian musician and sound artist, Daniele Bogon, who recently got picked up by Slowcraft Records for his upcoming album, Del Suono e Della Luce, scheduled to be released on February 3rd. The track I'm premiering for you today, titled "Prima Luce", is a highly textured, emotive sip of widescreen ambience that is both cerebral and prosaic, just as this form intends to be. It's a perfect introduction to his full length, "a brightly lit electronic work provoking visceral, intense impressions, [on which] the finely judged minimal aesthetic reinforces our long-held belief that less truly is more." Fans of soundscapes, drones, and analogue modular synth frequencies, along with those evoked from Bogon's guitar, hand made instruments, and piano, all captured, reworked and processed through a chain of fuzzy machines, will feel perfectly at home with this music, happy to be interrupted, at any point in time.

MM Works creates instrumental, cinematic music in a cross-genre exploring jazz, classical and post rock elements. Compositionally the Copenhagen-based duo roams in a delicate balance of structure and freeplay, avant-garde and modern composition.

'Fieldworks' was recorded in April and September 2022. It is a free-flowing experiment centered around guitarloops being reamped and manipulated through analog guitar effects. While there's no particular countable rhythm, the free jazz-like drumming pulsates underneath the loops that are topped by guitar improvisations, loose melodies, and broader flute arrangements.

今回のアルバムの曲の多くは2019年から2022年に作りました。なるべくアコースティックな楽器を使用しました、ギターのような音の多くはウクレレです。これらの曲には演奏を合わせる一定のリズムがないことがあるので、その代わりに音のコントラストのような物を意識しました。いつも的確なアドバイスをしてくれるShimmering Moods Recordsのオーナー、ポールのおかげでアルバムを作ることができました。

The concept of the record refers to the tragic events that have been taking place in Ukraine, and the title represents my personal stance on this matter. The record was created at the turn of 2021 and 2022. The individual pieces were composed in several places across Poland, as – due to the lack of a permanent residence – I spent over a year travelling around the country.

The events in Ukraine, as well as the circumstances I was confronted with in my personal life, undoubtedly had a strong influence on the character of the compositions that comprise the record.
