I created loops of sections of the tracks that made me tingly. I then tuned and adjusted the frequency. Using a looper I took 16 bars of 2 selections and then reversed it. Chopped up the loop and compressed it. Then adding a motion to the sounds using different shaped wav forms.

Alexandrite Lava Disquiet0450

According to art historian Lawrence Alloway, Agnes Martin was one of the principal pioneers of the “Hard-Edge” 1950's painting movement. “Even where forms are not purely represented,” he wrote, “[Hard-Edge] abstract artists have tended toward a compilation of separable elements, treated as discrete entities. Forms are few and the surface immaculate … the whole picture becomes the unit. The result of this sparseness is that the spatial effect of figures on a field is avoided.”

Martin’s work evokes not only austere minimalism but also a cerebral airiness, perhaps gained from when Martin lived in New Mexico while attending university. Her work appears to vibrate off the canvas, the rigor of her craft subtly transformed into a sort of trembly dissonance. Even a simple line appears to breathe; a series of seemingly identical shapes reveal hidden nuances on close inspection.

For this piece written for fake violins, Suss Müsik interpreted Martin’s lovely 1961 work entitled Words (ink and graphic on paper, mounted on canvas) as a graphical score. The parallel lines are represented by sustained, repetitious phrases playing a single note. The triangles are conveyed through a simple 3-note counterpoint performed in consecutive sets of four, four, six, six, six, six, four and four. 

The piece is titled Words and was recorded live with one overdub for piano embellishment.

as per the brief, I used parts from the archives, whether field recordings or audio snippets from previous projects to populate the various phrases in this piece. Post effects include Echo and multiband compression to help gel the somewhat random parts together.

Snatches of 2020 (disquiet0470)

This is made from snippets of a one minute sample of ice in a glass. Though some effects are applied all sounds are included as sampled (with minor EQ in mix) and represent the original material fairly faithfully. The result is purely rhythmic and textural rather than containing any melody or harmony.

The Assignment: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it.

Step 1: Please record the sound of an ice cube rattling in a glass, and make something of it.

Process: First I was amazed that the first Disquiet Junto project should be already 9 years ago! :O feels like, maybe 3 years.

I still got the recordings of the very first ice cube in a glass project in a folder, however I decided to record new samples, employing stereo microphones and a contact microphone. For the glass I used a large pharmacy flask. This leads to different source recordings but also I decided to use the ice-glass recordings only, created an interesting rhythmic loop and decorated it with stretched and otherwise manipulated sample snippets from the recordings. enjoy & happy new year!
