Feed Your Head: Scott Hutchinson Pantone 273 mix

Swedish label When Disco Goes Wrong, curated by local heroes Mindbender and Högt I Tak (SXDNS179), features seasoned DJ and producer Pawel Kobak for its 13th release. No remixes this time, only originals– and extremely well-produced originals, we’d say. It was a tough mission to choose one to premiere/review. In his “BuzzBuzz” EP, Pawel showcases his ability to bring together his (many) influences, delivering an interesting concoction of soundscapes. Deep, Progressive, and Classic House elements combined with shards of Trance and Techno, that’s what we found when were getting familiar with the EP.

The chosen one, “Deep Sea Creatures”, despite its aquatic-inspired title, enchants with an enticing cosmic atmosphere. Presenting a restless minimalistic synth lead, the theme reaches its zenith when the gorgeous Bizarre-Inc-meets-Marshall-Jefferson-inspired piano line takes the stage, providing an “oh yes, right there, this is it!” moment.

PREMIERE308 // Pawel Kobak - Deep Sea Creatures (Original Mix)

Attention time! Nang introduces the excellent new single from the duo Lazy Left. Originally from Ukraine and Armenia, two electronic instrumentalists Alexander Leu and Yuri Topolyan met in Sri Lanka, where they decided to base their name on their favorite surf spot in the south of the island 'Lazy Left'. The guys are experimenting between styles of Nu-Disco, Deep-House and Balearic. Their rich, warm and deep music, is inspired by the light of the sun and the sound of the sea waves, following the sunset rays, into the boundless ocean of space...

The remix single of the duos captivating track 'Friend' features 4 artists varying in style. The duos guitar based, dubby and deep sound is embedded within each track, yet taken to new realms with each remix. The Original version of Friend has a irresistibly catchy hook, making it ideal for remixing.

First up on remix duties in a regular face in the Nang family; Rayko. Madrid based, Canary Island raised DJ and producer is deeply influenced by the artists and sounds of the 70's and 80's.  He's had a successful run of releases on Nang and since then, a busy DJ schedule worldwide. His percussion focused remix is filled with tropical drums and resonant melodies that rise higher and higher. The rigid bass line is smoothed with the silky guitar riffs.

Next up is the Zimbabwean beat maker Demure. The talented producer known for his attention to detail and smooth beats has  lived up to his reputation. The space found within the mix is part of Demure's signature style. Deep sweeping low end sub, contrasted with detailed high freq textures and percussion marry up superbly. The vocals from the original are used in a more creative subtle way in this remix, echoing around the stereo field. The jazzy synth pads combined with the smooth guitar coat this track with a glossy finish.

The final remix comes from the Spanish Artist Ivan Fabra. Based in Barcelona Fabra's blend of Nu Disco, Italo, Cosmic Disco-Funk and Balearic vibes can be heard in his productions and DJ sets since the mid 90's. He lays down the heavy weight 4x4 Disco drums with shuffling metallic high hats. The bass line keeps the track rolling along, with dreamy pads floating in and out. The whole remix turns up a notch when the resonant Acid line filters though the mix uniting with the lower rounded bass line. Psychedelic synth sounds and vocoder do the finishing touches on this powerful remix.

Lazy Left - Friend (Rayko Balearic Dream Remix) [CLIP]

For our ninth offering we are delighted to welcome Lisbon based artist Larry Quest to the label. Larry is an astute producer adaptable to varying styles, strong in musicality and a particular flair for soulful, jazzy touches and classy deep house music. For the ‘Mystery Herd’ release we are treated to an EP richly inspired by the natural world and the colors within. Venus Girdle enjoys ethereal pads, a strong but distant kick and swelling percussion. Asian butterfly Alpine Black Swallowtail informs the next track, with its mountainous field-recording, gentle arpeggios and harmony of pads. Haliotis reverb swelling pads represent the waves, the synths and percussion, the spume and the bass groove embodying the sea. Nicobarica is a cool organic track with beautifully played keys, live guitar licks and a breezy rhythm section complete with rolling percussion all combining making for an infectious groove. Completing the EP is a spaced out, ambient take of Venus Girdle by Joe Morris!

Norwegian space enthusiast Frifot delivers three freaky house tracks to make for another vital EP from the fledgling Badabing Diskos label.
Nomadic producer Frifot has a long history of productions under various pseudonyms and artist names but this is a new alias he wishes to use anonymously. His music is often energetic but calm and mixes darkness with rays of light. It comes at various tempos from hyper-speed to blissed out and lush, and here layers in psychedelic spoken words to help guide your galactic travels.

'I Built My Spaceship Out of Cartoon Dust' is a superb opener that slowly unfolds from spoken words and bleeping synths to become a sparse but heavy house groove. It's powered by vast rubbery kicks. The chords are smeared and warm. The alien vocals are alluring. It is a unique proposition that brings a real freshness to the floor. 'Open Doors' is another deep cut with oversized kicks, deep sonar pulses and expansive chords that add grand scale. It's a futuristic sound with more well-treated vocals and last of all comes the quicker but equally seductive 'Put Your Soul to It.' It displays more excellent synth craft from Frifot as chords reach to the stars and the bulbous bass billows underneath.

These are dramatic and original house tracks that are as cosmic as they are deep.

Niklas Wandt - Vera Pelle

Home of respected artists, such as Johannes Klingebiel (SXDNS207), Donald Dust, and Vanity Project, the interesting London-based imprint Claptrap opens its doors now for the debut release of DJ Goodboy, a young and promising German selector, producer and multi-instrumentalist who showcases his production capabilities via three well-constructed originals on his “KOKO NI KITE” EP. On the remix duty, a spot-on interpretation made with love by aforementioned Vanity Project, the label boss himself, by the way.

With previous appearances on Zone Focus, Paradiso, Eclectics, and of course Claptrap, VP brought the original to his turf, opened his toolbox of references, and came up with a more House-ish take for GB’s wobbly “Texas Queen”. Acid lines, vocal hooks, percussive elements, and trippy FXs were craftily assembled to bring to life a lively and vibrant version of an already solid cut.

After such a nice first release, we’ll be looking forward to checking the future endeavours of mischievous and misbehaved DJ Goodboy.
