- Make a song in response to the weekly assigned poem (a new poem is published every Wednesday)
- When choosing a title for your piece also include the assignment number, for example “Title of your track (naviarhaiku382)”

Saitō Sanki (1900 – 1962) was a dentist who discovered his passion for haiku poetry in his mid-thirties when his colleagues at the hospital in Soto Kanda convinced him to write a haiku for a collection. Later, he became one of the most important exponents of wartime haiku: he was imprisoned in 1940 during the government’s World War II persecution of controversial artists, and was officially forbidden to write until the end of the war.

ima wa ima (naviarhaiku588)

Initially I had no inspiration for this challenge. Instead I was working on trying to create a stack of delay plugins that would give me a ping pong effect that I could use on future projects.

I used a single note from a Toraiz AS-1 as the source and when I completed my stack I found it very rhythmic and meditative, much like water dripping from an icicle.

I added other notes at various times and looping them creating a kind of polyrhythm bed and played a gliding lead line over the top. 

All sounds were created by a Pioneer DJ Toraiz AS-1. I love this little synth and its touch keyboard. The front panel controls are very well suited to live jamming and it's very expressive.

The odd title comes from the placement of the gliding lead sound. If I started it at measure 6 it made the middle part sound really good but then the ending was monotonous .  If I started it at measure 13 the other sounds faded out leaving just the lead which made the ending sound cool but then the beginning part was meh. Placing the lead starting at measure 10 seemed the best compromise and thus the name Icicle Ten :-)

The starting point for this was an experiment with converting the control voltages from a sequence inside Voltage Modular into MIDI data and passing that to Speldosa the music box plugin from Klevgrand: https://klevgrand.com/products/speldosa 

I then added the other elements including a second sequence and instance of Speldosa. In a break from the usual most of the effect processing was done externally. Although everything was recorded in one live take, mouse controlled to avoid MIDI channel conflicts. I tried recording the manipulations as automation tracks rather than just recording the results, OK in theory but a mess to work with, probably won't do that again.
