Natalie Shooter is a DJ, music researcher, journalist and editor based in London. Since 2010, she’s been a member of the Beirut Groove Collective, a vinyl DJ collective focused on underground clubbing music from the SWANA region and around the world. She has co-run the BGC’s cult clubnights for over a decade with her
partner Ernesto Chahoud, throwing parties in Beirut and London in grassroots venues. Known for her soulful touch with a focus on under-sung women artists, Natalie’s eclectic sets take in everything from Arabic funk and disco, Afro-soul, Lebanese Beat and Armenian Estraydin to ‘60s garage and psych, Soul, Rhythm & Blues and Popcorn. She’s DJ’d across Europe and the SWANA region, playing at club nights all over the world. Natalie hosts a weekly radio show on London’s Do!! You!!!, as well as a monthly residency on Bethlehem-based Radio Alhara. 

As a journalist, she’s written extensively about movements and musicians, past and present, across the SWANA region, from the wave of electro-chaabi, which rose out of Cairo’s working-class suburbs, to progressive Syrian- Jordanian ‘60s pop artist and actress Taroub and the vibrant Armenian scene in 1960s and 1970s Beirut that spread to the global diaspora. With Ernesto, she co-wrote a chapter on Lebanese disco and nightlife during the Lebanese Civil War, based on interviews with key figures from Lebanon’s music industry in the book ‘Disco Heterotopias: Global Dance Culture in the 1970s and 1980s’, which was published on Palgrave Macmillan in 2022. She’s also worked on a series of reissues of groundbreaking albums and compilations from the Arabic- speaking world, released on labels BBE and Now Again.

As well as documenting the regional music scene, Natalie has curated and produced numerous events and festivals in the Lebanese capital and in London. She was the music programmer at Radio Beirut, one of Beirut’s most active independent live music venues at the time and one of the region’s earliest online radio stations. She co-founded The Shoreline Sessions, a festival series that brought international and regional acts to coastal venues across Lebanon. With Shirine Saad, she also co-curated and produced the first edition of Hiya Live Sessions, a feminist festival featuring live streamed performances from women artists, DJs and poets from across the SWANA region, and hosted a live London show the following year.

Firstly, thanks to Dj wiggles for the opportunity to contribute to the Kinetic series <3

The mix is experimental and long-form, exploring ambient meditative selections as well as darker bass-heavy and textured tracks from across the bpm spectrum, with several tracks warped far from their original bpm. The pace, mood and energy fluctuate. Some tracks emerge quickly, like intrusive thoughts or distractions, others are  given more time to breathe merging into the mix more subtly. This reflects the often unpredictable and challenging nature of losing and regaining a sense of presence and control. The mix has a symbolic cyclical nature, returning to particular percussive sounds and motifs as it progresses. 

Many philosophies motivate me to DJ including the belief everything is connected to the collective and sound exists at that intersection, it is a universally connecting force that exists at the boundaries where mind and body meet the world. All creative practices are intrinsically informed by the personal experiences of their creator/s. This imbues them with narrative and gives them the potential for human connection at these boundaries. 

The title of the mix “decompression” alludes to the pursuit of emotive release. It is a response to life at present - from harrowing world events, to personal challenges and introspection. I hope people enjoy and connect with it, perhaps finding some peace of mind by its end.

I started the Fortune Sessions nights in 2019. Before then I threw a lot of house parties. When I had to move into a house unsuitable for big gatherings I began looking for a venue. 

The Fortune of War is a venue located on Brighton beach. It has an intimate dance floor space indoors for winter events and then a big outdoor space for parties in summer. It’s well-loved by locals, with a friendly and laid-back vibe. For a grassroots night it felt like the perfect fit. 

The first session went well but then Covid hit just before the second event was due to happen. I was disappointed but it gave me time to develop the aim and concept behind the events. I also acquired a better sound system to power them. The second session finally took place in March 2022 and two years on I’m preparing for the 15th!

The Fortune Sessions have always had a multi-genre format with a commitment to diversity behind the decks, and a low-key unpretentious vibe. The venue being a pub rather than a club means that the events draw a crowd of dedicated ravers as well as people just out for a good time. Not everyone who enjoys dance music vibes with the club environment, so I’m glad to be able to platform niche genres in an unintimidating space to a wider audience. The nights being free entry also means its more accessible, giving the opportunity for new musical discovery. On a few occasions I’ve been asked “what IS this music??” by people on the dancefloor.

For this mix I wanted to try and build a blend some of the outcome of my researches towards the different shades and forms of danceable music I personally enjoy the most, possibly limiting as much as possible the usage of music conceived and created specifically for the contemporary dance floors and sound systems, and trying to dig deeper into different dimensions of regular and non-regular rhythms, music jams and head-moving sonic creations from all over the world, mostly focusing on the mediterranean macro area and more.

My past, when I was living in Berlin and DJing more regularly in clubs, has helped me shape my technical skills. Milano instead has helped me breaking my limits, getting out of my comfort zone and destroying a lot of the patterns that, as a DJ and Music Maker, were locking me down in a box. There’s a lot of oxygen, curiosity and creativity nowadays in my everyday life.

Definitely one of the kinetic events. I prefer small DIY events over infamous and hyper-celebrated social gatherings. The only thing I care the most about lately is the sound system.

‘Crude Principles’ was recorded last month by Mr. Isopoulos over in Athens - ‘A mixtape inspired by friends, Venice and the deep bush’. 

We met Panagiotis last year while over playing a super special show in an old factory in Pireaus. The gig featured live oud, a modular synth performance and a solo percussion show using nothing but old materials from the factory by Christos Chondropoulos, who you might know from our Athenian Primitivism album. After the performances Fergus DJ’ed followed by Boomkat’s own Conor Thomas late into the night. Great times.

The weekend took a special turn after Panagiotis drove Tako, Terra Exotica and I out to a particularly Lynchian town called Marathonas. Many drinks were shared at a slightly time-forgotten beach bar and then at the even more Lynchian ‘Roadhouse’. The drive there and back was soundtracked by some super old burned CD’s Panagiotis had which took us all back to those 2010-2015 golden years, hearing some tracks for the first time in forever.

This mix features tons of crazy industrial, oddball futuristic library and global folk traditions and was one of the coolest things we heard recently so we wanted to share it too. Check Panagiotis on soundcloud here >>
