Zauberstab Volume 1 is a compilation of electronic bedroom music made by contemporary artists that belong to similar sonic spheres, to be released in LIO Press, a new label based in Barcelona founded by Alicia Carrera. The A side feels like a holiday in an exotic landscape; the kind of place you don't want to leave. The B side then goes in a slightly deeper meditative direction, but not too far, since the sparking disco-infused psych exploration of 'Space Surfari' will hold you back from falling into the void of the unconscious. What comes next is the sound that would welcome a moonlit night sky. The C side slinks into a minimal synth oriented exploration, ending with the intergalactic hopeful drift of 'Har'. The last side will provide a comfortable seat on this hypnotic journey. 'Ete 2017' is an ode to the late summer nights, a mind-driving loop carried by gentle percussive sounds, filled with some bass deepness. The next tracks are the the right balance between a hug and a breeze of fresh air for your mind and soul. At this point you might find yourself wondering if it's a good idea to open your eyes or just keep them closed for a bit longer and thoroughly enjoy all of the details of this story. But, why not? This one is, after all, a record to build beautiful memories with.

Teerpappe, eigentlich ein als gesundheits- und umweltgefährdend eingestufter, ja sogar europaweit verbotener Dachabdeckstoff, erfreut sich seit Neuestem wieder großer Beliebtheit: in Form eines jungen, aufstrebenden Plattenlabels aus Hamburg. Erfrischend und abenteuerlustig.
Nach bisher fünf Veröffentlichungen erscheinen nun gleich mehrere Neuheiten auf einen Streich. Liebevoll in eine bunte Pappkartonbox eingepackt, inklusive USB-Stick, Poster und individuellem Foto, finden sich fünf 7-Inch-Singles von fünf Interpreten, die stilistisch ähnlicher und zugleich unterschiedlicher nicht sein könnten.
Um mehr Licht in die Tiefen der Teerpappebox zu bringen, lassen wir die Musikanten selbst zu Wort kommen.

Cid Hohner sagt: Anfang 2021 hab ich zum ersten Mal von der verrückten Idee der 5er-Pappkartonbox erfahren. Ich war umgehend begeistert. Als Vinylfreak sowieso. Und als mir dann zu Ohren kam, dass ich bei dem Projekt dabei sein durfte, war ich nicht mehr zu bremsen.

Fred und Luna sagen: „Teerpappe“, was für ein Name. Auf den ersten Blick abschreckend, aber bei näherer Betrachtung so bedeutungsvoll und allumfassend. Und zukunftsweisend, sehnen sich die Menschen doch weltweit nach einer schützenden Dachpappe, unter der möglichst viele Platz finden und gemeinsam Spaß haben, in diesem Fall: gemeinsam musizieren.  

Hans Solo sagt: Eine klasse Idee ist das. Fünf Vinylsingles, fünf Musiker, alle aus verschiedenen Regionen Deutschlands, mit unterschiedlichem Background in einer Pizzaschachtel zu vereinen. Großartig. Hab ich recht?

Syncboy antwortet: Ja, vollkommen recht hast du. Schon die Grundidee ist famos. Kreativität zu schaffen durch formale Zwänge. Neue Freiheiten durch selbst gesetzte Regeln zu ermöglichen. Die Vorgaben kamen von Labelchef Wosto: 95 Beats pro Minute, 4:20 Minuten Länge, Avantgarde- und B-Seiten-Touch. Wie kommt man auf eine solch verrückte Idee?

Wosto, Labelchef und eine Hälfte von Fallbeil, meint: Der zündende Gedanke kam mir auf meiner letzten Fahrradtour durch Norddeutschland. Irgendwo an der Küste hat mein Bike schlapp gemacht, aber zum Glück war da ein hilfsbereiter älterer Seemann mit großer Lebenserfahrung, der mich in die Kunst des, wie er es nannte, „regelorientierten Reparierens“ einführte. Du musst nach einem selbst bestimmten Schema vorgehen, sagte er, dann kriegst du jede Schieflage in Griff. In vier Minuten und zwanzig Sekunden war das Rad repariert. Und die Pappkartonidee war geboren.

Acoustic, no-age krautrock from Berlin releasing on Glasgow label, Phase Group. 

The next release on Phase Group unearths a truly unique project that has existed as an outlier in the Berlin underground since 2002. 

A stage decked out with xylophones, tambourines, timpani, wooden percussion, two drum kits, a cello, harmonicas, saxophones and pieces of scrap metal. Eight unassuming musicians playing repetitive, trance-inducing phrases, at times serene, fragile and dream-like and at others wild, primitive and driving. This isn’t a scene you might associate with hazy nights out in Berlin but it’s what you’d find if you ended up at a Kulku show.

Kulku's music is a hard to define blend of percussive minimalism, folk, krautrock, post-punk and no wave, almost exclusively derived from acoustic sound sources. Their debut album ‘Fahren' presents this unique sound-identity that they have been crafting for the best part of two decades. 

The A-side presents 3 tracks of percussive propulsion, minimalist xylophone motifs and repetitive drums alongside monotone organ, dramatic narration and woodwind instruments moving in and out of dissonant howls and melodic improvisation. The B-side is devoted to lighter tones, beginning with the glockenspiel minimalism of ‘Unterm Himmel’ and rounding the record out with trance inducing drone of the album’s title track which builds up into a cacophony of snare drums, dissonant accordion and melodica before fading out like dream.

All songs composed and recorded in Berlin by Wenzlovar, Gatis Silde, Johannes Schmelzer-Ziringer, Johanna Riska, Cornelius Onitsch, Alexander Samuels and Maxfield Gassmann
