NOOD5 features contributions from six friends of the Noods family, consisting of Berlin based techno iconoclast Ossia, shadowy Bristol producer fresh from a highly acclaimed EP on Berceuse Heroique, Pessimist, Timedance affiliate Cleyra, Milanese sound experimentalist Katatonic Silentio, Rio underground lynchpin and RBMA graduate Valesuchi and a collaboration from Dekmantel’s Epsilove and the elusive Ployer Fower.

The record is a confident assertion of the station’s sonic ethos; filled with tense, dread-laden soundscapes that foreground the percussion and sub bass. Reverbs and delays are utilised in the true dub tradition, wringing out unconventional grooves from the negative space between the drums: it’s music for the head and the body.

Originally intended to be released on our fifth birthday hence the name, fuck it — the pandemic slowed much down so have it on our sixth birthday instead.

This weeks guest Pagan has been building a repute as one of Ireland and the UK's most exciting up and comers, building a sonic palette that weaves in and out of trance-like euphoria, gun finger breaks and vibrant techno. His ever expanding discography impressively visits several sub-genres of electronic music, meaning he is able to take a listener through various emotions. 

During his short and rapid rise, he has enjoyed various accreditation's from some of the scenes biggest platforms; including being nominated as one of the hottest young producers by AVA Festival and several features on BBC Radio 1. With constant support from top DJs and now a regular in the club and festival circuit his career is starting to take shape.

We recently caught up with Pagan to discuss zoning in on one sound, the strict clubbing laws in Dublin and recent internship with Lobster Theremin.

‘The Pulse of Iron’ an apt reflection of modern progression into the unknown industrial world. It comes from Naarm based artist, Consulate who has found a home on Pure Space Records for our 10th label release. On this EP, Consulate delivers four tracks of dance music for the dystopian with a slick DnB sheen.

The flip side heads back into half-time territory with ‘The Fear’. Delayed vocal samples paired with dub-style stabs pulse in a heady but immersive rhythm.

You might find that the piano playing at the beginning seems a little out of tune - that’s because I’m
not using the standard western scale known as equal temperament. I’ve actually tuned the piano in
line with the alp horn, the national musical instrument of Switzerland. It’s a really long (like, several
metre-long) horn with no holes in the sides so it actually plays in a natural harmonic overtone series,
so I think it gives the piano a beautiful clear resonance as well as (to western ears) a sort of gentle
wooziness. The rhythmic elements of the track are inspired pretty much directly by the original, just
translated into a quicker tempo with some added sound design. I’m really interested to hear what

people think!

Lobster Theremin with AK Sports & Pagan - 02 June 2022

PAGAN flys into this week's APECAST. We had a chat with him over on our Instagram about Ireland's endless supply of talent, defining his sound and his musical influences. 

After being named as an AVA Emerging Producer and racking up releases on Lobster Theremin, 1Ø Pills Mate & RRRAAAVVVEEE. The Dublin based musician’s career is only just beginning, but a productive year in the studio has helped him catch the ear of some of dance music’s biggest names, with the likes of DJ Boring, Asquith, and X-Coast playing his music in livestreams and radio shows during 2020. 

Leaping into the Festival circuit, playing Life Festival, Mass Festival, Higher Vision, and Yurt City all within the space of a year. Although global lockdowns put a hold on future festival bookings, he spent his free time writing an abundance of new music, much of which has caught the ears of both DJ’s and online publications. He has already released his debut EP on Lobster Theremin’s 1Ø Pills Mate, which has gained support from Jenson Interceptor, Boston 168, Nastia, and more. His most recent EP ‘Butterfly’ comes via Cheeky Music Group’s RRRAAAVVVEEE imprint. The tracks have already seen airplay on Radio 1, featuring in Prospa’s Essential Mix, and Jaguar’s Introducing show, as well as support from Sasha, TSHA, Alan Fitzpatrick and many more.

After three days of camping in the miserable rain & wind, playing loads of high-energy trance, ravey bangers & party-time classics seemed like the best way to lift the spirits in the Forrest. After a year spent writing as much music as possible, but (due to a mixture of perfectionism and label issues) a fairly low level of releases, I've finally got a consistent flow of music coming out over the next few months on a variety of labels. Knowing this, it felt like the right time to make a mix featuring all the music that I've been working on for the past 2 years. A lot of it is planned to come out this year, but there are some unsigned bits and some tracks that I have no plans to ever release in there too (this mix might be the only time they make it past the confines of my laptop). Fresh from an EP on Midland's Intergraded imprint, Otik returns for a disjointed offering with paranoid synth work and an arpeggio that fizzes through the tweeters.

Pugilist offers up dub stabs, analogue sirens with blips of space echo on 'Eclipse', with a garage swing and Rhodes, contrasting a ruff and ready sound palate of bass weight.

Metalheadz signee Commix, (AKA Endian), returns to DEXT for a tumbling UK bass track with swung percussion and side-chained textures of rising crackle.

Skull Disco, Applepips boss and dubstep icon Appleblim, returns from a recent album on Sneaker Social Club, offering 'Hydrothermal Vents', that sees him taint a 126bpm framework with his dubstep-tinged roots, providing room for the groove to move.
