Solid Steel (6th September) Letherette return to Solid Steel for the first hour following the release of their self titled album and the recent single 'After Dawn'. Their mix touches on some 80's gems from Aaron Broomfield, The Jones Girls, 9th Creation and Kashif, laced throughout with a whole plethora of Letherette tracks straight off the hard drive. 'After Dawn' is out now and features remixes from Bibio, Barker and Baumecker, plus a Jimmy Edgar remix of 'Restless'.

In Hour 2, Ollie Teeba from The Herbaliser and Soundsci gives us his own take on 'War of the Worlds' for the Solid Steel 25th Anniversary. here in his own words;

'When I was 8 or 9 years old I heard Jeff Wayne's musical version of H.G.Well's 'War Of the Worlds' for the first time. It scared the pants off me. For years afterwards I listened to the record over and over. It is certainly one of the things from my childhood that cemented my interest in film scores. Though not a film score per se. Its marriage of rock music with orchestral arrangements to tell a story, had me transfixed. The combination of funky rock with sinister string parts would heavily influence and partially shape the sounds that, years later Jake Wherry and I would be making in The Herbaliser. 

A few years back I was given, as a Christmas gift, the 'Collectors Edition box set of Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds'. As well as tons of interesting facts about the creation of the original recordings it had several CD's of alternate takes, remixes etc. On one CD, I excitedly discovered that they had included all of Richard Burton's dialogue parts, without music. Having already created and performed an alternate live DJ score to silent film 'The Lost World' from 1927, this seemed like a great opportunity to do a similar project with one of my favourite childhood stories.

Using records from my own collection of movie soundtracks and other suitable material, I created the original version. This was given to some close friends as a christmas present in 2010. The version you are now hearing is a somewhat revised and extended version, created specifically for the 25 years of Solid Steel. Also, it is the 75th anniversary of Orson Welles' infamous radio play, that when broadcast on Halloween 1938, had many Americans convinced that they were listening to a genuine attack from outer space. This is by no means intended as an improvement to Mr Wayne's recording but a tribute to H.G Wells, Jeff Wayne, Richard Burton, Orson Welles and of course Solid Steel.

In Hour 2 we welcome Stephen Mallinder, a founding member of the hugely influential Cabaret Voltaire, who were pioneers in British experimental electronic, industrial music and visual art. He joins the Solid Steel 25th Anniversary celebrations and says of his mix ;

"A selection of music from peers, associates, co-conspirators, influences and baton-carriers. Starting with early head-turners This Heat (1978) and filtered  through the mix claps from composer Steve Reich (1972) onto post-punkers 23 Skidoo who I'd gigged and recorded with. 
A couple of FSOL tracks - covert Cabs somewhere in there and back up north to Sheffield's first real label WARP - the original Forgemasters reworked by bleepers Unique 3, The Black Dog posse and sonic provocateurs supreme, Autechre. An offering from my own Cabaret Voltaire - a rework of Yashar with the original 70 billion people sample. Keith le Blanc and co - Major Malfunction, classic tough electro, there's a whole history from Sugarhill to Tackhead in there. And rounded  off with our one-time co-conspiritor On-U's Adrian Sherwood's mix of metal-machiners Einstürzende Neubauten, complete with sniff sample.

All spiced with some period spoken word courtesy of Malcolm X, Mr Burroughs and JG Ballard stories and lovingly mixed by hand.

Solid Steel Radio Show 29/11/2013 - Part 3 + 4 - DK + DJ Food

2013 marked the 25th Anniversary of Solid Steel when Matt Black and Jon More from Coldcut started broadcasting together on pirate Kiss FM in 1988. It's been a year long celebration and we'd like to thank all the guests who have contributed incredible mixes throughout the year. To see off the year, we asked our listeners to vote for their favourite guest mix from the last 25 years and also their favourite mixes from our resident DJ's.

Your favourite Coldcut mix was the 'Journeys by DJ Special' from 20th May 2002. The original '70 minutes of Madness' was released in 1995 and often considered "the best DJ mix album of all time" and this mix coincided with it's reissue in 2002. It features extra tracks that didn't appear on the original CD including the Coldcut rework of 'People hold on'

Unsurprisingly, the most popular mix for DJ Cheeba, DJ Moneyshot and DJ Food was their epic version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album from 31st August 2012 made entirely from the original sample sources titled ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ . Each of them took a third of the album to work on and combined their efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources they’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.

Finally it was the Hexstatic mix from 28th January 2011 which was your favourite, with the classic Royksopp remix of KOC, leading into the lovely electronica Two Dots by Lusine. SBTRKT's remix of Modeselektors 'Art&Cash' leads perfectly into material from Robin Hexstatic's project, plus music from  Magnetic Man, Andreya Triana and Dave Angel.

Congratulations to Daniel Westlake from Tunbridge Wells in Kent, who was the winner picked at random in the competition and will receive prizes from Novation, AIAIA, Serato and Solid Steel.

Using Serato's Video-SL plug-in for Scratch Live, they mix, scratch and blend the sound AND vision for each track they play. Months were spent creating videos for each piece of music, either using the original source material or, in most cases sampling footage to create a new video entirely. Described as 'Video Turntablism', it has become a way for Food & DK to visualize their already legendary DJ sets. 
As usual, it's the diverse mix of music that they love and are known for, taking in current faves from Foreign Beggars & Noisia, Joy Orbison and Dorian Concept, but also plenty of classics that have kept dancefloors rocking from TTC, Pendulum, Luke Vibert, Think Tank and Z-Trip. Solid Steel (10th January) This week it's our extended Solid Steel family member DJ Kentaro. Having released his Solid Steel mix CD in 2005 and two albums on Ninja Tune, he's one of the world's best turntablist who will rock the dancefloor alongside showcasing his turntable skills. He explodes into the New Year with a mix to wipe away any hangover cobwebs that may still be lurking. After kicking off with his own track Torus, it's onto the Flume remix for Hermitude and into a couple of Latin flavoured trap beats from Tropkillaz. He continues in a similar vein with music from Troyboi, TNGHT, UZ, Blanchez and Jackal, before easing slightly with Lindsay Lowend & Jonah Baseball, Lung, Culprate and Lone.

Solid Steel (5th December) It's a huge show this week as we welcome back Diplo to Solid Steel. 10 years ago Diplo released his album Florida on Big Dada and played his first UK gig in an intimate venue at the monthly Solid Steel club night (and twice more that year). He plays somewhat larger venues now, including a residency in Las Vegas and Madison Square Garden on NYE. Solid Steel (13th February) DJ Food - Selected Aphex Works

Unless you've been living under a rock recently you'll have heard the news that Aphex Twin unexpectedly uploaded 155 of his old and unreleased tracks to Soundcloud and made them downloadable for free. Starting from his earliest demos through to known live tracks, later jungle experiments and beyond, this is the motherlode that his fans have always wanted. DJ Food, a long-time Aphex fan, has been through the entire collection with a fine-toothed comb and selected his favourites for the first half of the show this week. The hit rate was high but he's has managed to cram 31 tracks into 85 minutes to mark this unique occasion and peppered the mix with vintage interview clips of Richard James talking about his music.

This week Hexstatic in the mix as they celebrate the release of new single ‘Gammera’ this Monday, the first release on Robin Hexstatic’s new imprint Lower Level Records.
    The mix sees some of the influence affecting this direction and takes in tracks from ‘Gammera’ remixers Akira Kiteshi, with his awesome take on the The Pinball Number Count, and George Lenton, bringing some old, cold rocking samples bang up to date. Beautifully complex crunk from Reso starts us off and leads us through releases from pop pioneers Gorrillaz and Massive Attack,.. ending up-tempo with some older faves from Pantha Du prince and Joy Orbison. Gammera single out this Monday 22nd, with a special Bandcamp bundle featuring all three mixes and the Gammera remix iPod video.

Solid Steel in association with Serato (17th July) Funkstorung return to Solid Steel this week, having been guests back in 2001 (you can hear that mix in the 'Featured' section at SolidSteel.net ). After releases on Studio K7, Compost and Chocolate Industries and remixes for Bjork, Wu Tang and Jean Michel Jarre, they took a break for 10 years. Now they are back and their latest self titled album is out now on Monkeytown. A remixes EP follows in August that features a remix by Mouse on Mars that's included in their mix. They had this to say;
"This mix has everything Funkstörung is about.  Poppy vocals vs. weird beats, nice melodies vs complex sounds… all in a funky suit.
To us the mix feels like a journey… it's stuff from the past, yet unreleased tracks and 'classics' (in our eyes).
It has been a big honour to do another Solid Steel Mix… over 10 years after we did the last one.  It definitely feels really good to be back."

Solid Steel (9th December) King Geedorah aka MF DOOM is perhaps the most legendary and revered living figure in underground hip hop today. A generation have grown up in awe of the masked producer and MC - he’s influenced and worked with J Dilla, Flying Lotus, Earl Sweatshirt, Madlib, Clams Casino, Danger Mouse, RZA, Ghostface Killah, De La Soul and more. To celebrate the re-release of the conceptual classic "Take Me To Your Leader", originally released in 2003 via Big Dada (Ninja Tune), King Geedorah has delivered a rare "Snake Charmer" mix (premiered via Pitchfork) for Solid Steel. Solid Steel Radio Show 9/12/2016 Hour 1 - King Geedorah Snake Charmer Mix

In Hour 2 we hand over to Adam Freeland who has been producing music for over two decades, which included running his Marine Parade label out of Brighton, a 10 year residency at Fabric and nomination for a Grammy. Now he is part of The Acid, which includes RY X from The Howling. He told us; 
"This mix is really just an acknowledgement of my lifelong love of arpeggiators and excitement for this new wave of arpeggiated synth stuff combined with some deeper drones and desert psych influences. I’m living totally off grid way out in the Mohave desert near Joshua tree, where this mix was recorded. My studio is solar powered ( no other option out here), there’s an exhilarating feeling to know that the photons running through the circuit boards of my machines emanated from the surface the Sun just 8 mins and 20 seconds prior. Of late, I’ve been more focused on my band ‘The Acid’  and pursuing my lifelong dream of living off grid and figuring out how to build a house than DJing. Incase you missed it we ( The Acid) put out a debut album called ‘Liminal’ and more recently we scored a documentary film  ‘the bomb’  a documentary about the story of nuclear weapons. We have been touring film festivals, performing the score in a 360 immersive environment live to the film. In December we performed it live at the Nobel peace prize ceremonies in Oslo which was in incredibly inspiring and moving experience for me. Solid Steel (6th April) In Hour 1 celebrating the release of the new Dr Octagon album 'Moosebumps: An Exploration Into Modern Day Horripilation', we welcome back Dan The Automator, who first appeared on Solid Steel in 2000 and is one third of the trio behind Dr Octagon alongside Kool Keith and DJ QBert. The first Dr Octagon album dropped over 20 years ago to great acclaim and two tracks from that album 'Blue Flowers' and 'Earth People' feature in the mix. Solid Steel Radio Show 8/10/2010 Part 1 + 2 - Hexstatic

Solid Steel returns with brand new and exclusive mixes from Four Tet and Trevor Jackson.

For this special show we have Kieran Hebden - AKA Four Tet - partnered with Trevor Jackson - founder of Output Recordings, the independent record label he ran between 1996 and 2006. 

Both artists have a long history with the show (this is Hebden’s 7th appearance and Jackson's 3rd), as well as with each other. Hebden’s early releases as part of Fridge and his first solo release - the 1997 "Double Density" single under the artist name 4T Recordings - were released on Output. The label was also home to the first releases under his Four Tet Alias, including 1998 singles "Thirtysixtwentyfive" and "Misnomer", and 1999's “Glasshead"/"Calamine" single and first full-length album “Dialogue”. Jackson also released music on the label as Skull and Open Music and elsewhere including his work as Playgroup.

Speaking about the mix and his history with Jackson, Hebden told us: “This is a mix of music from all over the place that I’ve been enjoying and getting inspired by in recent times.  A snapshot of my personal listening world. Some of the way I search for music and the way I DJ was learnt from Trevor Jackson so his influence is always in what I do in some way.  I met him when I was a teenager and he introduced me to loads of records with all different styles and origins and also showed me ways to bring these sounds into the future through sampling and DJing. This open minded approach to listening and sound I think is one of the great strengths particularly of producers who came from hip hop in the 80’s and 90’s because there was such a strong incentive to explore all types of music in the search for samples. The passion and enthusiasm for listening and discovering music that comes from this is something I have huge respect for"

Solid Steel (10th May) Hexstatic open this week with the hypnotic 'Calling Me' by Dusky, followed by a free track from Happa with the heavy, heavy bass vibes of 'Freak' blending nicely into a Sheild re-edit of classic Lil Louis. Then it's a jump up remix of Sia via Diplo and into mysterious re-edit of classic UK Garage with Wookie's 'Battle' from AKAmusic. We finish on the London sound of Tessela's 'Hackney Parrot' and 'Helter Skelter',..BIG!
Luv*Jam take over proceedings with a live vinyl mix of tracks taking in music from Heels of love, Chloe and early 90's tracks from YFB and Tingo Tango. Then it's more recent cuts from Persian & Nicola Duncan, Dauwd and L.I.E.S, finally ending on the recently unearthed 'It seems to me' by Lady E, the former vocalist of Newcleus and their producer Ben 'Cozmo D' Cenac.

A classic Royksopp remix of KOC, leading into the lovely electronica Two Dots by Lusine. Big fav from last year,.. SBTRKT's remix of Modeselektors 'Art&amp;Cash' manages to be both banging and heartfelt at the same time and leads perfectly into spanking fresh new matierial from Robin Hexstatic's new 36 Kings project. Next up The surprisingly classic Flying Into Tokyo from Magnetic Man that mixes suprememly well with Andreya Triana. A &nbsp;nice syncopated tempo change from Al Usher and a big big old fav from techno legend Dave Angel and then into some nice dancefloor action from Zero 7, until we end on a more chilled vibe with lovely electronica from Koreless and Commix.
