During the plague in London, theaters were closed. Instead of writing plays, Shakespeare wrote poetry. The Sonnet EP has been launched to raise money for non-profit theaters that have had to shutter or cancel/postpone productions due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

This EP is a collection of sonnets set to music by a collective of theater makers across the US. It costs a donation - any donation of any size - to a non-profit theater effected by the shutdown. If you're here, and you have the means, we ask that you give whatever you can to a non-profit theater and post the theater's name in the comments on one of the tracks here. From You I Have Been Absent In The Spring...

The Trio for Flute, Cello, and Harp was written specifically for this recital. As I pondered the idea of oneness, I was drawn to some musical ideas that ultimately found their way into the work. The opening chord is an interpolation of the “headshot chord” associated with the composer Marvin Hamlisch, specifically in the musical A Chorus Line, as each dancer presents themselves as individuals. At the end of the musical the dancers perform a final number entitled
“One”, in which the individuals the audience have gotten to know over the course of the play then perform as a singular unit. It seemed a fitting jumping off point for a piece reflecting idea of oneness. Throughout the work, a theme is presented that, while it is not a quotation, is reminiscent of the melody of the song “One,” especially its rhythmic character. As the piece progresses, there are moments for each instrument to break out in solo cadenza-like passages, but
the piece finds rest as the three instruments join together in the presto finale. While the work is written as one continuous movement, it does exhibit the character of a multi-movement work with large sections of varying tempo and texture – all held together by a singular motive. Though the idea of “oneness” was an important one as I composed the work, there is no program for the work, other than the drama of the music itself.
