Solid Steel Radio Show 24/4/2015 Hour 1 - Caribou

I've been working on creating a new "instrument" that is semi-generative (in the sense that it doesn't behave totally randomly, but creates a series of notes bases on some input given, but that note creation has some chaos to it...). I would like it to, eventually, be able to generate some complex note combinations. As you may hear it can do it decently already, however I think the looping is generally too short right now... I'd like to have some patterns evolve over say 4, 8, or 16 bars. Currently I'm limited to 1. 

Anyway, the goal is to have it synth independent, so different synths can be used with the same instrument. In this example I've used a chip-ey square wave synth. This example was cut from about 12 minutes of screwing around.

I think I might make a short album out of it (when I get it sounding like I want) by recording everything to tape and picking out some decent stuff from it.

Tom Waits (on Jim Wilson): "Wilson, he's always playing with time. I heard a recording recently of crickets slowed way down. It sounds like a choir, it sounds like angel music. Something sparkling, celestial with full harmony and bass parts - you wouldn't believe it. It's like a sweeping chorus of heaven, and it's just slowed down, they didn't manipulate the tape at all. So I think when Wilson slows people down, it gives you a chance to watch them moving through space. And there's something to be said for slowing down the world."
