Cafe OTO opened in April 2008 with the aim of providing a home for creative new music that exists outside of the mainstream. It comprises one large cafe/performance space open during the day serving food and drink with an evening programme of live music almost seven nights a week. 

OTOROKU is part of OTOProjects - a not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) that has been set up to manage the programme at Café Oto. Any profits from OTOROKU are put back into supporting what we do and will help us to continue programming the best musicians and performers from all over the world.

Jez riley French (b. 1965)

based in East Yorkshire, Jez has been at the forefront of developments in creative field recording and approaches to the act and art of listening for many years.  Alongside performances, exhibitions, installations, he lectures and runs workshops around the world and his range of JrF specialist microphones have become widely used by recordists, sound artists, musicians and cultural organisations and have had a significant influence on the development of sound culture in recent years.

In recent years he has been working extensively on recordings of surfaces, spaces  and situations and developing the concept of photographic scores. Jrf is particularly associated with the development of extended recording techniques, including the recording of structural vibrations, contact microphone recording, ultrasonics, infrasonics, internal electronic signals and recordings made with hydrophones.

Amongst his key recent works are pieces capturing the sound of the dolomites dissolving, ants consuming fallen fruit, the Tate Modern building vibrating, the infrasound of domestic spaces around the world, glaciers melting in Iceland and the tonal resonances of natural and human objects placed in the landscape.

JrF lectures in a guest capacity at various educational institutions including RCA, Goldsmiths, Leeds Beckett, Newcastle University, Lincoln University and Hull University.

Bruce Andrews// 25 Hour Twitter sculpture & performance

On April 1st, 2014, Bruce Andrews and Maria Chavez will collaborate on a 25 hour performance piece on the social media platform, Twitter.

The Bruce Andrews 25 hour piece is meant to use Twitter as sculptural documentation, becoming a real time archive of Bruce Andrews's current poetic writing and the responses it elicits in real time. Using a social media platform as an exhibition space, Maria Chavez will tweet a Bruce Andrews language text, every 5 minutes for 25 hours. That’s the 300 parts of a new poetic sequence, ‘Improper’, designed and edited for this occasion.

Each twitter post will also have a link leading to a Soundcloud web page made specifically for the piece, with audio recordings of Andrews, performing each tweeted ‘poem’ individually.
