Восток, pronounced "Vostok", means "east" in russian. The title is a tribute to the spacecraft Восток-6 and its pilot; Valentina Tereshkova; the fifth russian cosmonaut and the first woman in space. 

This expedition was the sixth of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics' space program manned by humans. It was launched on June 16, 1963 12:30 (Moscow time) and is, although  successful, a not very well known program where Tereshkova orbited the Earth 49 times - 1,250,000 miles - in two days, 22 hours and fifty minutes with an average 88.3 minutes for each orbit. She landed safely by parachute two days later in Kazakhstan, several hundred miles from where she had taken off.

The radio conversation in the midst of the track is between Ms Tereshkova and that time's USSR- leader Nikita Khrushchev. He congratulates her on her achievement and speaks of his "fatherly pride" for her.

She held the world record of the longest flying cosmonaut/ astronaut until year 2000.

"The Beatles didn't make a good record of it. I think subconsciously sometimes we - I say 'we,' though I think Paul did it more than the rest of us; Paul would... sort of subconsciously try and destroy a great song.
He subconsciously tried to destroy songs, meaning that we'd play experimental games with my great pieces, like Strawberry Fields - which I always felt was badly recorded. "Cimmerian was one of the last songs we did for the album. I think we were all kind of dealing with some intense gloom at the time. I asked D3 if he was interested in doing a bossa nova tune. He put together the drums and percussion and piano and I played some guitar and sang, but then we had to call in the big guns to give it some flavor! Alex Sinfield is on the saxophone. He's great, love his stuff, he's got the right touch, all the time. Cheers to Alex! And of course then we thought a little father son duo on a song would be great so we begged Russ Sinfield to pick up his new guitar, fix the noise problem in the wiring and then rip us a beautiful guitar solo. The Sinfields rock. All in all, it came together pretty quickly and easily. One of my faves on the album. It's definitely dark and gloomy. Cheers!!"
