Still Frames After 2AM by Okuruto feels like wandering through a city that only exists in half-forgotten dreams.

The album drifts between retro vaporwave textures, hazy lo-fi warmth, and soft late-night jazz motifs, creating the sensation of flipping through a box of faded photographs from an alternate 1980s — a decade that never truly happened, yet somehow feels deeply familiar.

Each track plays like a suspended moment in time: neon reflections on rain-soaked pavement, pastel hotel lobbies glowing under dim fluorescent lights, the quiet hum of an empty boulevard at 2AM. Okuruto blends Italo-Japanese sensibilities into a sound that is both nostalgic and surreal, where analog synths breathe gently beside dusty drum machines and mellow jazz chords.

The atmosphere moves between pastel softness and electric fluorescence — like VHS memories tinted in pink and turquoise — evoking a perfectly stylized world where the night never quite ends.

Still Frames After 2AM isn’t just an album; it’s a collection of nocturnal snapshots from a parallel retro future, a place where time slows down, neon flickers quietly, and every sound feels like a memory you’re not sure you ever lived.

And now for something completely (entirely) different.

I would like to present to this distinguished audience a piece of poetry from the United States today. It is by none other than Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849). 

His works are dark, mystical, and often convoluted—which is not his fault but rather ours, since we do not fully understand his works. This portrait of him is set by the sea (greetings to MIZERO); it is dark, yet at the same time it possesses a never-ending beauty, which is why I hold Poe in such high regard.  

This poem (A dream within a dream) gained musical prominence in the 1980s through the Düsseldorf (Germany) avant-garde electropop band “Propaganda.”

In their song “A Dream Within a Dream” from the album “A Secret Wish,” they staged the poem impressively.

In my opinion, Propaganda’s version of “A Dream Within a Dream” fails to capture Edgar Allan Poe’s dark, philosophical poetry.  The theme of existence as a fleeting construct, in which reality and illusion are inextricably linked, is also inadequately addressed. But I think that’s due to the time and the intention to make a pop song, which isn’t the case here.
