Being There - The Room Upstair

The Secret of Sherlock Holmes, co-written by Jeremy Paul and Jeremy Brett, ran in London's West End from 1988-1989, and starred Brett and his longtime co-star Edward Hardwicke.  The only recording of this performance was made by Brett's close friends Woods and Pritchard, and was an ambient tape recording.  Due to the breakdown of tape over time before the advent of mp3 conversion, it was very muddled and difficult to listen to.  Here I have restored it as much as possible with noise reduction software, and now the wonderful performances of Brett and Hardwicke are much clearer and more discernible.  

The Secret of Sherlock Holmes ACT 1

Long Night Long Stones was a 17 hour and 3 minute long soundscape designed  to mark the 2023 Winter Solstice and explore the depths of the earth during the longest night of the year. Starting at 3.39pm (the time of sunset in Edinburgh) on Thursday 21st December 2023, listeners were able to tune into the audio work on the online community radio station EHFM.live at any time into the evening, throughout the night to the point of solstice at 3.26am, continuing until the sunrise at 8.42am on Friday 22nd December 2023. The work was designed to be experienced solely during this event and will not be replayed in its entirety.

Inspired by the geological concept of Deep Time, and the significance of sites such as Holyrood Park that helped develop our understanding of the land as we know it, I used a mixture of field recordings and synthesised sounds to imagine what the layers of time beneath our feet might sound like.

Suite for a Foggy Day (featuring David Bowie)

A late-stage rehearsal straight to cassette for reference. Recorded shortly before going into the studio, probably at John Henry rehearsal rooms. This is Mark on guitar, Lee on drums, and myself on piano and organ (the bass was always addressed in the studio once the basic track was down, which is why it doesn't feature here).
It's best to take the 8 minutes out and listen to the end, preferably in headphones, and in a quiet space,

O'Neill and Freeman have collaborated on a number of varying projects during the course of several years using both visual and audio mediums.

They both have a taste for the curious, the mysterious, and the sinister. Creating an anthology of stories exploring these themes and atmospheres suited for the radio medium.
