Dreamy, melancholic, peaceful, or just plain gorgeous? As long as your ears are open, the sound world of Yui Onodera will take you where YOU want to go. From simple means (piano, guitar, computer), Onodera draws complex materials, and then mixes them back into deceptively simple results. The work draws inspiration (and its title) from an abstract structure thought up by architect Christopher Alexander. What you get is quiet background music if you leave it at that or, if you are willing to take the time to listen, a deep immersive journey.

Hailing from Tokyo, Japan, Yui Onodera is a musician, a composer, and the founder of Critical Path. He studied both music and architecture, which explains his uncanny grasp of spatiality in music. His method consists in blending delicate instrumental lines with field recordings and computer treatments to create quiet, ambient electroacoustic pieces. This approach is akin to artists like Machinefabriek, Stephen Vitiello, and Chihei Hatakeyama.

"Semi Lattice" is Onodera's second solo album to be released in 2015 (the first one was "sinkai" on Japanese label Arctic Tone), after eight years of solo silence. In the interval, Onodera pursued several fruitful collaborations with musicians and groups like The Beautiful Schizophonic, Pjusk, Vadim Bondarenko, Mizkami Ryuta, and Baskaru recording artist Celer. All these projects seem to have informed "Semi Lattice" in some way, Onodera's solo works having grown lusher, fuller, and more fully-formed.

This track is a study on the juxtaposition of irregular rhythmic patterns created by using five small sound objects as percussive elements. Three of the sound objects have been taken from fragments of field recordings done in the London Underground, the other two correspond to pre-existing recordings of the vibrations of a knife on a ceramic plate.

I chose the sound objects based on their percussive interest, and built an Ableton Live's Drum Rack instrument with them in order to create the three basic MIDI clips of different lengths on which the track is built.

After the initial capture of the MIDI performance, I added some effects: reverb, delay, panning, ping pong delays, and some compression. The effects are switched off at the beginning of the track, and they build up progressively until the final section, in which the effect channels are mutually fed back to the point of self oscillation.

On tiny sounds and irregular rhythm patterns (disquiet0215-tinyrhythms)

I started building this with the keyboard riff, which I recorded live and used the midi from to layer another patch of the softsynth rgc later in. The chimey loop at the start is from Samplephonics "30 Free Arps" which I got last week. Then came the guitar, and another percussive loop halfway through. I decided it needed another layer, so I added a part on z3ta and layered it again with a piano patch from a synth called sfz. All done in SONAR.

Testing my self built Ian Fritz "Double Well Chaos" module as applied to VC FM Radio, Phonogene, etc. for fast chaotic live sampled concrete.

The sound of birds was downloaded from a CC0 (Public Domain) recording at freesound.org, and cut into several clips which were then glued together by using cross fades, processed using some light reverb, and bounced to cassette tape and back. The resulting file was further edited to remove some undesirable clicks, and looped to the desired length. The synth lines were recorded using an LPK25 controller and some of Ableton Live's synths.

An adventure begins (disquiet0221-morningmusic)

"Compose a piece of music intended for a newborn child, something peaceful as they first experience the world outside the womb."

I remember when our first daughter was born, she would sleep better on car rides when we played music with a touch of prominent bass.  Nothing too loud, of course.  

This piece tries to replicate that "perfect" soothing baby sound that our daughter liked while in the car.  In addition to two kinds of basses, there's a variety of field recordings mixed in the background, along with a section of the track "Tactile Music" by Mark Rushton and Jon Harnish, from our 2008 album Ornate Culmination.

I’ve worked on the material for Tiny Fugues for over three years, composing and improvising with the cello and electronic instruments. This album is about searching and finding the unexpected in the everyday. Finding hope and positivity in the midst of despair and depression. Finding the grand and symphonic in simple melodies. Through this search, and our resulting curiosity and compassion for everything around us, I believe we can find hope and meaning in very dark times. This album is based around custom-built software (the fuguelooper) that converts my ambient limprovisations into more rhythmic material, allowing me to change my sounds across octaves and speeds, stretching and compressing my material into unexpected directions. The software works as a lens to highlight unexpected details of my performances and encourages me to react and improvise in new ways. The fuguelooper has been important in my latest improvisations and performances, and it gives
these new pieces a dynamically shifting and unpredictable backing. By searching for the extraordinary in what we once thought mundane, we can find connections and meaning. Our art can change our surroundings. Our curiosity and compassion will sustain us. I hope that this album inspires you to do that.

I've recently discovered (at long last) the music of Danish composer Per Nørgård. He developed a compositional techniques based on what he called the "infinity series", which is a simple formula for developing a series of numbers based on an interval such as a minor second. The series takes the initial interval and then slowly expands upon it both upwards and downwards in pitch, getting broader in scope as it progresses. This idea can be used to generate melodies, rhythms, or other aspect of a composition.

I decided to try playing around with this, but applying it to microtonal intervals, using Csound and a Python script to generate the Csound score according to the series. I ended up with this brief study, which takes the first 256 terms of the series and applies it to three of my favorite intervals simultaneously:
 - 9/8 (major whole tone from the 9th harmonic)
 - 11/8 (unidecimal tritone,from the 11th harmonic)
 - 7/4 (septimal minor seventh, from the 7th harmonic)

The starting tone (240 Hz) plays throughout the piece as the other notes unfold above and below it. I used sine waves processed with a touch of tanh distortion to add a slight amount of harmonic content.

Infinity Study

The OO-Ray is the alias of Ted Laderas, an improvisatory and experimental cellist from Portland, OR. A systems biologist by day, he extends his experimental attitude to exploring the outer possibilities of the cello, often distorting, looping, or pitchshifting his instrument beyond recognizability into waves of reverberation and extended drones. Inspired by the gauzy textures of My Bloody Valentine, he call his style “shoegazer cello” or “chamber drone”. His music explores the realms of electroacoustic, shoegazer, and ambient.
