Programme Note:

As the title may suggest, 'Stop Being Nosy' is a reaction to the idea of blurring personal space a performer has on stage which tends to be a sacred one and letting go of certain control a performer can do over the other party. These conflicts of interest result in a self-balancing act between two contradicting ideas which perhaps could be noteworthy to both the listener as well at the performer.

Bio:

Wilson Leywantono is a composer currently based in Indonesia. His music has been performed in the UK, the Netherlands, Ireland, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Japan, Indonesia and Malaysia by many professional ensembles and performers such as Orkest de Ereprijs, New European Ensemble, Rosetta Contemporary Ensemble, Open Union, the Azalais Quartet, Hordienal Quartet, Decibel, Le Page Ensemble, the Schubert Ensemble, Thallein Plus Ensemble, Fumiko Miyachi, Mary Wiegold, Rowland Sutherland, Miriam Kitchener, etc.

Wilson Leywantono - Stop Being Nosy (2022)

Pilu is Indian evergreen raga, which uses all the chromatic notes, which all the notes have visitation rights. Pilu raga is performed late afternoon before sunset.

Mishra is a word from Sanskrit that means mixed, which allows tremendous scope for the artist to bring in melodic lines from other ragas. Mishra Pilu raga is full of devotion and piety by expressing the mesmerizing mix of emotions, which are an eternal source for human emotions: joy and sadness, longing, tenderness.

My intention was to create slow motion changes, which on the one hand are based on very strict patterns, and on the other hand – can hardly be noticeable.

Open Union is an experimental music duo made up of composer-performers Peter Bell (modular synthesiser) and Patrick Ellis (electric guitar) based in Birmingham and London.

Described by the treasured composer Howard Skempton as being, ‘sometimes subtle and unstable; sometimes rich and dense’, the duo aims to build up strong collaborative relationships to create new works. Their current collaborators are Christine Cornwell, Wilson Leywantono, May Chi, Paolo Griffin and Seán Clancy.

The duo have performed across the UK and Internationally at events such as Ealing Extranormal (UK), Sounding Here (NL) AMOK (UK), Don’t Mind Control (UK), Birmingham Modular Organisation (UK) and CODA Festival (UK).

In 2025, they co-hosted a portrait concert with saxophonist David Zucchi featuring music by Paolo Griffin at the Hundred Years Gallery, and earlier that year, they supported Passepartout Duo at Centrala Space, Birmingham as part of their UK Tour.
