Blobism describes a movement in architecture in which buildings have an organic, amoeba-shaped, building form. With the modern capability of technology to supply entirely 'artificial' complex substances, with unique performance characteristics, the range of possible design forms has grown considerably. Architecture radicals, such as Archigram in the 1960s, Buckminster Fuller and the deconstructivists, began to design unusual, inflatable and 'plastic' buildings that exploited this potential, and sometimes were even beyond the structural possibilities of the time.
 
Richard Buckminster Fuller (1895 - 1983), who popularised the ‘Geodesic Dome’ through his work, was one of the first modern Western thinkers to connect architecture to ecology and the environment, describing describe the modern world as ‘an ecosystem to be reconciled with nature.’ Geodesic constructions partly appealed to Fuller as a metaphor for the principles of a systemic and energy efficient worldview; it was extremely strong for its weight and its ‘omnitriangulated’ surface provided an inherently stable structure, and because a sphere encloses the greatest volume for the least surface area. Fuller did not limit himself to one field but worked as a 'comprehensive anticipatory design scientist' to solve global problems surrounding housing, shelter, transportation, education, energy, ecological destruction, and poverty.

Originating in the mid-1960s, "Psychedelic art" refers to the art movement of the late 1960s counterculture, featuring highly distorted or surreal visuals, bright colours and full spectrums and animation (including cartoons) to evoke, convey, or enhance psychedelic experiences. Psychedelic visual arts were a counterpart to psychedelic rock music. Concert posters, album covers, liquid light shows, liquid light art, murals, comic books, underground newspapers and more reflected not only the kaleidoscopically swirling colour patterns of LSD hallucinations, but also revolutionary political, social and spiritual sentiments inspired by insights derived from these psychedelic states of consciousness. A two hour trip of sonic psychedelia for this month’s mix.

Sound art is a hybrid art form that bridges visual art and experimental music, using sound as both its medium and as its subject. It defines a broad range of projects dedicated to the emphasis, exploration, and experimentation of auditory perception. Sound art overlaps with experimental music or noise but tends to place greater focus on conceptual exploration of the complex relationships between the sound, listener and space. The way music and sound art are experienced is also different. While a musical piece should be experienced in its entirety, sound art is usually experienced in a venue where the artist has no control over how much time a listener spends with a piece.
Conceptual artist John Cage’s notorious piece 4’33” contributed greatly to the separation of musical composition and sound art while Max Neuhaus, another pioneer in the field of contemporary art and music, is credited with being the first to use sound as a medium for site-specific installations. Some artists explore sound in its pure state, simultaneously bridging and muddling barriers between sound, noise, and music in the contemporary or historical sense. Others, such as Samson Young, investigate the political and cultural implications of human interaction with the aural.

AfriCOBRA was a Chicago-based group of black artists whose shared aim was to develop their own aesthetic in the visual arts to empower black communities. Rather than bringing about change through political revolt, these artists used the black identity, its style, attitude and worldview to foster solidarity and self-confidence throughout the African diaspora.

This month's show includes music from AACM members Wadada Leo Smith, Muhal Richard Adams and Tomeka Reid and Jeff Parker, and is inspired by the intertwined legacy, style and ethos of the sounds and visual art of both collectives.

This month’s mix explores the influence of Pop art on music.

Tune in for this month's episode of https://soundcloud.com/francescamackay 's Architextures radio show, this time focused on one of the most significant cultural movements in Brazil: Tropicália ⚡️
The term Tropicália was first coined by artist Hélio Oiticica, for an artwork of the same name, which he exhibited at MAM Rio in 1967. The piece demonstrated Oiticica’s desire to give contemporary art a specifically Brazilian character to subvert the “purity” of European modernism. Some trace Tropicália back to 1928, and Oswald de Andrade's Anthropophagic Manifesto. Andrade’s main argument was that Brazil’s history of “cannibalising” (or absorbing and creating something new) from other cultures was its greatest strength.
The ideas presented in this essay helped to inspire a wider cultural and political shift in Brazil. A year later, in 1968, the Tropicália movement was epitomised by the album Tropicália ou Panis et Circencis by musicians Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa, Os Mutantes, Tom Zé, Nara Leão, Torquato Neto, and Rogério Duprat. The album came to be considered the defining sound of the Tropicália movement. The artists involved created a new exotic version of pop, being as influenced by psychedelia as it was by samba, bossa nova and more traditional South American genres. Tropicália created musical and cultural anarchy, a revolution in Brazilian sound.

The YBAs, or Young British Artists, were a group of innovative artists who began exhibiting at the end of the 1980s and rose to international prominence in the 1990s. They represented a new and exciting phase in British art and were considered innovative, entrepreneurial, provocative and irreverent. They appeared during a period of political and economic upheaval, when Britain was perceived as lacking a truly vibrant postmodern art culture comparable to the Pictures Generation in New York and the Neue Wildern in Berlin. Postmodernism’s characteristic traits: appropriation, rejection of fine art materials, preoccupation with spectacle, and the rejection of distinctions between high and low culture, ran through the heart of much of the YBAs' work. Leading artists of the group include Damien Hirst, whose installation The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living consists of a dead shark preserved in formaldehyde in a vitrine, and Tracey Emin; My Bed is comprised of her own dishevelled double bed surrounded by detritus. The shock value, use of non-art material and processes of such works, and the group’s ‘can do’ entrepreneurial attitude and wild ‘art-world slumming’ lifestyles documented in the UK tabloids placed the YBAs at the epicentre of intense debate within the art establishment, media and public spheres and fuelled their subsequent global notoriety and massive commercial success.

I first heard this song in Thailand when I was getting a tattoo by Mr. Tung and within the 6 hours session we must have heard this track 6 times. When the track to this day, my spirit returns to that day in  Bangkok with Mr Tung. And who doesn't love Manu Chao?

I have never heard a remix of this track (surely there is) and this was an obvious choose as it also has no drums. I was recorded with a metronome so it was easy to start. As I got into this details of the original, I rediscovered my love for the magic in simplicity (which I am working on, promise).

MFM: Welcome to the series Jonah. Originally from Edinburgh, San Francisco resident since 1992, do you still live in San Francisco?

JS: Actually I recently just moved back to SF after spending most of 2020 in the UK. I had planned to be in Europe for an extended break from the US but Covid saw an end to that and my plans had to change. I miss British and European culture. I have family and friends there so I intend to be back over as soon as I can!

MFM: According to your discography the majority of your output started to shape up right after you moved abroad, in '91. How would you explain this creative outburst? 

JS: Before I arrived in San Francisco i was still figuring out how to produce the music that I wanted to make so when I got here I started to collect gear in earnest - it was a little moment in time when most people thought analog synths and drums sounded shit so I managed to find a TR-909 for $150, a Roland SH101 at the flea market and so on. So yes, suddenly having some decent gear and fun gigs to play was very inspiring! I did feel a kind of creative freedom being so far from South London and the pressures of living there as an artist. SF in the 90’s was very affordable for artists and it gave us the freedom to really focus on the music.
 
MFM: You started your own label Reflective in '93 and had quite a busy release schedule, especially during '95/'96, before it suddenly seemed to stop right after. What happened? 

JS: I started Reflective in '93, the year my first son was born. Flurescence EP was my first solo release and it got noticed around the world so that enabled me to keep putting releases out. With the momentum of the Terence McKenna collab album, things were going pretty well. But what we found was that even though there are lots of amazing labels in the US, it was actually pretty hard to sell them domestically so most of our stock was exported to Europe and Japan. We ended up pressing in the UK and running the label from SF and that presented problems so I had to put the release schedule on hold. At that time I had also signed a deal with Astralwerks so had contractual obligations to deliver albums and tour. It was a very busy time and by 1997 when our second son was born we decided to take a hiatus from the label. Not to say the label is gone forever though!
 
MFM: Flurescence, now found its way to the Virtual Dreams compilation, almost 30 years later. How does it feel that your older music is being re-released and rediscovered by newer generations?

JS: I am very happy and honored to be part of the Virtual Dreams compilation. Yes, there seems to be a bit of attention for this time period of electronic music at the moment, and the chill out thing in general. With so many online resources, everything is discoverable by anyone so all those tiny labels like Reflective that were putting out small runs of 1000 records (that was a small run then) are maybe enjoying some retroactive attention now. 
 
MFM: Does this new interest change your motivation and/or inspiration in the studio maybe?

JS: I follow my own interests and direction when it comes to making music but reaching new audiences has to gratify the artist whose work was made for sharing. My development as an electronic musician has come through thirty years of studio experimentation, initially with hardware and then incorporating digital software. When I made Fluorescence in 1993 there was no computer in my studio, but by the early 2000s San Francisco was the epicenter of computer innovation, people like my friend Josh Clayton were writing amazing software and so I went off on a long exploratory trip to integrate digital technology both in my studio and in my live rig. My aim right now in the studio is the same as always: make sounds and keep the good ones.

As usual in good tradition now here at Trushmix. Cato Canari is back  with another new years mix! Deep, tech, trance, emotional, techno and the harder sounds, surprising like we always get from the Tokyo based Norwegian underground man. Always on point!
A more subtle and darker leaning party oriented mix. Somehow a reflection of this past weird and off year. But there is light in the tunnel! We keep it rolling and we keep it positive!

Again as last years reminder for this year to come as well.

Priori has become a firm favourite of ours here at Phonica over the past couple of years. His releases, which crossover through many electronic genres, from house and techno to IDM and ambient, have been picked up by such labels as Echovolt and Dust E-1’s Dust World in recent years, although much of his musical output, including his phenomenal 2019 album, ‘On A Nimbus’, comes via his own label, NAFF, which he co-runs with fellow Montrealer Ex-Terrestrial.

After an excellent detour with Joram's neoclassical live performance, we return to electronical ambiences and atmospheres. Our last release, that was almost 4 months ago saw the first remix for Padre's "Golden Hour Trilogy" EP within Pablo Bolivar's Club Vision of "Roselight". We are tremendously delighted to have the man himself back at it again, delivering a patient and ambient mix, that almost inclusively features an array of music from his labels. Jason Gardiner started out as a jazz major on the guitar, but transitioned to the world of electronic dance music and audio production.
He is also one half of the DJ & Electric Bass duo Modula.
He has since expanded into his own solo DJ projects, Jason HD for driving, sexy grooves, and KLOiSTr for dark, psychedelic jams.
