YUF-O is Yu Su and Francis Inferno Orchestra.

In the blistering Los Angeles Summer of 2019, a chance encounter occurred between pals Yu Su and FIO, whilst both dishevelled and on their own separate journeys to overcome immigration bureaucracy. In the midst of filling out forms and enduring long waiting periods (pre pandemic) the pair managed to spend some time in the studio, two afternoons to be exact. The result; YUF-O. Four tracks that comprise a charming and characteristic blend of both artists' personalities, yet totally unexpected in the best possible way. A mixture of absurd house, blissful ambient, accidental trance and some totally weird and wonderful other stuff.

Despite nightlife coming to a standstill over the last year or so, it's been a privilege to see many emerging talents coming to the fore and getting the recognition they deserve. 

London-based activist, DJ and radio host Charles Olisanekwu AKA DJ Winggold has been putting in some mileage over the last few years with his Unbound parties and Netil Radio show, but 2020 saw him gather even more steam; not just through his musical activities but as an active voice for pushing forward cultural and social change, within the industry and further afield — all while holding down a day job as a lawyer. 

His sets are a treat, pulling from a vast array of influences and keeping you on tenterhooks for what's round the corner: you're just as likely to hear dream pop and jazz as you are UKG, electro and grime. But it isn't just about the music, it's about the principles that guide it. Much of Charles' musical work is steered by Afrofuturism, as well as the concepts of identity and self-determinism; in particular how these intersect with the experience of being a minority.

What's special about his outlook is that, although he's pushing his own musical output, working a tasking job and being a voice for change in the industry, he still manages to find the time to bring up, support and push his contemporaries, giving them a platform wherever possible.

Now, anyone who knows Charles will know he does not do things in half measures, and his mix for us is evidence of that. Coming in at a whopping two and a half hours, he takes no prisoners on this one, leading us down a murky path through jungle, acid, electro, broken rhythms, dubstep, grime and techno, with tracks that speak to his personal past, present and future.

"2020 was a very difficult year for all of us, but we managed to get through it doing the things we love. We made lots of music while reflecting on past, present & future.  There seems to be a light of hope for this year. We'll never forget that in June 2020 we were scheduled to play Buttons for the first time, in addition to a European tour. We were soooooo excited! Nonetheless, we look forward to doing it in 2022.  We can't wait to be able to throw our own parties again, Fun Fun and Leftclub in Buenos Aires, and to be able to travel and share our music with dance floors around the world.

Empathy is the codeword when it comes to The AM's second solo EP: The 'Sexworker' EP. A short story through music and art, allowing you a moment to walk a mile in another seasoned professional's shoes... Elena Colombi likes the weird and wonderful things in music. Her show on NTS proves that, skipping as it does from techno to EBM, post punk to industrial and wave music with an always inquisitive ear. An under-the-radar regular at some choice parties around London for years, she is sure to break out into the wider consciousness in 2017, and we hope that this new podcast from her goes some way to assisting with that, because she is a selector well worth sharing. 

Filled with frosted industrial landscapes, muffled drums and plenty of metallic surfaces, Colombi’s mix finds light in darkness and human emotions in abstract sounds. It’s a fully realized sonic world that could be old, could be new, but is never less than wholly absorbing and uniquely odd.

For the whole of this week, we will be celebrating International Women’s Day with our ‘Celebrating Women in Music’ campaign. Through DJ Charts, statements, mixes and more, we aim to highlight some of the talented and incredible women in the music scene and discuss how we can shape a more gender-balanced world

@johannaknutsson is undoubtedly one of the most talented artists in the electronic music scene today. With an extensive back catalogue, Knutsson founded the vinyl only cult label Zodiac 44 with Luca Lozano and also co runs UFO Station Records with Hans Berg. 

Using these imprints and labels such as Crime City Disco, Random Island and more to release her own music while also making regular appearances at clubs such as Berghain, Knutsson is continuing to develop as an artist with an alluring and otherworldly approach to djing.  

She also plays live as a solo artist and with the group Circle Of Live and she will be releasing her debut album "Tollarp Transmissions" will be released at the end of April. For her International Women’s Day mix, Knutsson goes deep into the realms of electronica and techno.

Oscillate was an event and mix series focussing on high-quality electronic music presented in a safer and more inclusive environment. Oscillate Tracks was the associated label, releasing select music from admired artists.

Johanna Knutsson debuted as a DJ on the vivid nightlife scene of Berlin towards the end of the 00’s. Built on a foundation of techno, her sets are on the emotive side of the spectrum. Johanna moves around effortlessly between genres; riding on rhythms, drums and sounds; incorporating hard-hitting house, acid, breakbeat and electro - a fantasy of spacey, deep, hard uncompromising music sans aggression. She creates a landscape for you to travel into with her, whether it is a soaring BPM-trip or a soothing private carpet ride, she wants you to feel comfortable and grounded. She connects with you and sees her set as a wordless interaction where energy and motion fluxes freely.
