Next up on Alphaville records is Robbenspierre with his offering “Infinite EP”. The young italian, offers a sample heavy EP infusing a pleasant mixture of early 90s techno, some hardcore elements and a UKG groover. The A-side starts with the title track “Infinite” a well constructed peak-timer full of heavy sub-bass, trippy sounds and a dash of euphoria. Following this is “We’ve Programmed Your Brain”, a heads-down, late-night track intertwined with twisted vocals primed to control your thoughts. The B-side starts with “I Like That”, a large bassline paired with a simple groove, trippy fx and an infectious vocal sample that leads the song. The B2, “Their Voices”, is a similarly functional number, with an equally Phat bassline and another interesting use of vocals. The EP finishes with a slight change of direction, “Drink All Day” is a wobbly UKG track inspired by the art of the all day bender.

B2 - Their Voices

Orainn 02 is the second release on R.Kitt’s imprint. After initially setting up the label to release previous material featuring in live sets from festivals and club gigs last year, this release consists of brand new tracks all put together after the world fell apart. In R.Kitt’s words

“I felt like a lot of that old music was too intrinsically linked to a time and setting that doesn’t feel in any way relevant anymore. The environment of spaces like dance clubs or big open festival fields full of thousands of people seems so far away and the horizon isn’t even in sight, and it feels weird to try and understand or comprehend music that was made for those settings in a meaningful emotional way right now. Instead, this release tries to draw out some of the feelings I’ve been experiencing since everything changed.”

Volatile emotion is at the core of each of the 4 tracks on this EP. The opener, Dance Zoned, is a naïvely hopeful, rollercoaster paced, breaks infused piece that tries to distil meditative moments of elation found during this time. Due To reflects a more post-apocalyptic vision, robotic and desolate but buoyed by melodic bursts that serve to break through the cold atmosphere with injections of warmth. It’s Leaving Me feels like it is both tragically sad yet peacefully accepting, reflecting on loss, growth and change. The EP is rounded out by Not That Way, a foot down, all speed, no chance of stopping kind of tune.

These are not just tunes for the club space, which obviously doesn’t exist at the moment in anyway that we were previously familiar with. But the music is intended to summon the same kind of emotional release that we experienced in those spaces, in whatever environment you want, until we return.

For the first record of the new decade Outer Zone welcomes Modus’ triumphant return for this second part of his “Triple M” sequence.

Standing in direct contrast to the stasis much of modern life has been held in, this EP offers up an opportunity to vicariously enjoy a world, where the futuristic vistas that techno promised at its genesis seem present. Machinic cycles, looping escapism and understated funk are the axes in which this space is rendered, a space that for a moment allows us some respite from stillness.

Modus - Gears

Originally recorded to cassette, these five acidic tracks from Spanish-born producer and record store owner Dip Shim are a paean to his neighbourhood in Malmö, Sweden.

The breadth of styles across the EP is impressive, taking in uplifting techno, mid-tempo electro, banging acid, and ambient, all created with classic analogue machines, suffused throughout with that warm tape sound and sweet sweet 303.

Practitioner has been active for well over a decade under numerous aliases - releasing field recordings, musique concrete and ethnic percussive sounds; with his electronic productions floating ambiguously between dubtechno, UKG and Romanian minimal.  

He recently released a 12” split on Lissoms records picked up by Ben UFO, Raresh, Moxie, Glenn Astro & more. Previously work included remixes with LFO, Mr Nex, Maximo Park and a slew numerous compilation appearances.  

As founder of Ghetto Method Berlin, under the Practitioner guise he has played at many notorious clubs across Berlin including a residency at the legendary Kunsthaus Tacheles alongside composing soundtracks for film and theatre including Call Me Reality and When I Dance amongst other projects.  

This album features five-time John Peel guest and Orbital vocalist, Lianne Hall on vocal duties.
