CPU celebrate 50th release with rebuilds of 2 rare bleep techno tracks from 1990.

Originally released on white label, ‘Move’ was written by Dean Marriott (aka D.Ramirez) and Lloyd Douglass and recorded in Sheffield in 1990. Only a small run were pressed which is reflected today by their high price on discogs.

These rare white labels by Detromental became legendary in the Sheffield techno scene as CPU label boss Chris Smith recalls: “they sounded like they should have been on Warp”, comparing them to the likes of Forgemasters, LFO and Nightmares on Wax.

Last year Chris noticed the track ‘Rewind’ had been posted on a techno group on Facebook and Sheffield DJ Richard Hardcastle tagged Dean in the comments, knowing he was the original artist.

Chris contacted Dean to ask if the master tapes still existed, unfortunately they were lost so Chris asked for permission to rebuild the tracks. Dean was sceptical at first as techno cover versions rarely work, but Chris’s keen eye for detail saw faithful reproductions using many of the synthesizers used to make the originals. 

This project is a labour of love for Chris as these tracks were among his favourites from the era. Huge respect to Dean & Lloyd for writing them and graciously allowing this project to happen some 27 years after they were originally made. 

As with all tracks in the ‘Yorkshire Bleep & Bass’ genre; watch yer bass bins - I’m tellin’ ya!

Limited edition 12" vinyl in shrink-wrapped printed purple sleeve with paper inner. Includes Move (Rebuilt) and Rewind (Rebuilt).

Following an incredible release earlier this year on Lillerne Tapes Alien D is back. This time on fifteen.pm with 3 more kaleidoscopic journeys to drift away to. Today's premiere features the track Frog Shirt from the forthcoming Jazzin' the Cube EP. The track opens with bouncy kick while airy and shimmering synths float above. As the square bass enters the mix, it begins pulsing along as a frog's neck does while meditating on a lily pad. There are tons of bits of sound to get lost in on Frog Shirt. Alien D illustrates again an ability to make tunes that are both contemplative and groovy – calming to the soul yet makes you want to get up bop around too. It's this sense of duality and playfulness that makes us stoked for each upcoming release from Alien D.

Practitioner has been active for well over a decade under numerous aliases - releasing field recordings, musique concrete and ethnic percussive sounds; with his electronic productions floating ambiguously between dubtechno, UKG and Romanian minimal.  

He recently released a 12” split on Lissoms records picked up by Ben UFO, Raresh, Moxie, Glenn Astro & more. Previously work included remixes with LFO, Mr Nex, Maximo Park and a slew numerous compilation appearances.  

As founder of Ghetto Method Berlin, under the Practitioner guise he has played at many notorious clubs across Berlin including a residency at the legendary Kunsthaus Tacheles alongside composing soundtracks for film and theatre including Call Me Reality and When I Dance amongst other projects.  

This album features five-time John Peel guest and Orbital vocalist, Lianne Hall on vocal duties.
