I'm really moved by how @xnyhne described their Koreanness, in part, as "a willpower to preserve". In this sense, their mix evokes in me the same kinds of tensions I feel between the necessary pain of remembering and the compulsory mania of transmuting that pain into an unknown forward. It takes us backwards into ancestral history, through brooding, distorted soundscapes, and then towards a future where high-octane, han-releasing rhythms abound.

Nyhne is a bloodstained poem in an ornate frame. It is the sonic moniker of Nancy Kim, a queer Korean-American interdisciplinary artist, whose work navigates across sculpture, sound, design, and architecture. Their projects consider both time and “waste” as physical materials that transmute into portals to hidden stories. As Nyhne, their music explores feedback, drone, experimental noise, found sounds, ritual, and spoken word, often forming textural landscapes for catharsis.

A veritable product of the contemporary American underground, Furtive cut their teeth as a DJ and DIY event organizer in Washington, DC’s warehouses. Furtive now co-runs an intimate, blossoming off-the-books venue in Philly, and holds a radio residency at Philly scene mainstay Great Circles. Enjoy!

A little about this mix: I recently played Wrecked in April and my set wasn’t recorded, so I decided to reconstruct some of my favorite moments from the night. Lately I’ve been trying to piece together my love of different genres when I play out: leftfield techno, polyrhythmic sounds, post-dubstep, more classic 4x4 techno and house rhythms, and my love of 80s synthy tracks. It’s not always easy for DJs to express all sides of our musical tastes, and it’s definitely still a work in progress for me. Wrecked felt like a perfect time to experiment more with weaving between many genres. I always try to record mixes in one take, so forgive any minor bumps and bruises along the way in this recording 💖. May is AAPI Heritage month, so this mix is also dedicated to all the other Asian DJs holding it down and doing amazing things around the world. 

 T.Wan is a Brooklyn-based DJ with deep origins in Seattle. Her perceptive ear for trippy techno and bassy, polyrhythmic tracks captivated listeners at Honcho Campout and has since earned her opportunities to play at notable NYC venues like Nowadays, Basement, and Good Room. She has a monthly show on Bristol-based Noods Radio, where she’s been a resident for the past 3 years.

ADAB is known as a black non binary trans individual who explores sound as a whole. The Pittsburgh based, Chicago born and molded, T4T LUV NRG artist has become known for melding boundaries, often sifting between crates of house, techno, bass music, jungle, broken beat and everything esoteric that exists in between. They've brought this balanced approach to their sets at esteemed parties/festivals like No Way Back, Draaimolen Festival, and Freerotation with no intent to stop anytime soon. Via their involvement with T4T LUV NRG you can often catch them flanked by dear friends behind the decks, conjuring with labelmates Kiernan Laveaux, Russell E.L. Butler (as b2b duo Boyz II Them), Bored Lord, Eris drew and Octo Octa. Equipped with this wide ranging approach and the bonds of chosen family they push against preconceived notions of the craft, continually self overcoming to bring us something with tangible intent...

"I came into doing this pride mix with the intent of displaying my own personal joy as a non binary trans person. Every song picked is one that has lifted my spirit in some shape or form and I wanted to give that to my own this pride season. Pride for someone like me is often highlighted by isolation and a lack of desirability, so this mix is a gathering of gems that have battled against those feelings. It's also a collection of tracks that I've been listening to this Pride season in particular. A time that has been elevated by newfound love and a growing sense of finally finding somewhere to belong...enjoy!"

This is a recording my dj set on July 19, 2019 at Nowadays in Ridgewood - Queens NY. It was a very hot Summer evening so I wanted lots of cool textures and patient builds to keep people cozy but steady and excited. So excited in fact a member of some beautiful dancefloor appreciation accidentally knocked some cables off the cdj about 2/3rds of the way in but recovery was swift and it's still a great recording. @p_areidolia has been posted up by your favorite front left speaker for years. Despite a deep catalogue and knowledge of music and a well-loved stint of parties in San Francisco as @noctuarysf (alongside @kudeki), she held off on DJing herself, keeping her focus on elevating the gender-marginalized artists around her. Over the last year, she's started investing more of her energy into ambient sets with an immersive, underwater quality reminiscent of our favorite ambient rooms.

"This was recorded on a Pioneer XDJ RR at an annual gathering of a small group of friends, where we hike approximately 10 miles and bring sound to the 5,000’ summit of a mountain above Los Angeles overnight.

I had never used this controller before - I have a much simpler one at home, but it went fairly well after one practice session beforehand. The small group involved with this fully commits to pitching in to make it happen, leaving no trace (with some added extra precautions this year given the circumstances), and really being fully invested in the experience.

I had not socialized IRL with more than a couple of people since the beginning of March outside of protesting and wanted to create a gently joyful and psychedelic experience under the stars, as well as play music in a way that made sense between the friends who played before and after me. Nearly everyone in the group is a DJ, producer, or at least a self-confessed music nerd, so it’s both thrilling and terrifying to play for them in such a small and deeply intentional group.

It is easily one of the most physically taxing things I’ve ever been involved in, but also one of the most rewarding. I say every time, “I’m not sure I can do this again” and keep coming back for a little suffering with my ambient music....seeing the endless glittering lights of the city below, near-complete silence in high desert nature, and the sun rise through a colorful layer of smog, smoke particles, and thin air makes it thoroughly worthwhile."
