Premiere: Nhii - Fes

A rare feat for a well-versed hand that has helped shape an island’s electronic music scene and now DJs from a pedestal, Valeron’s 2022 album Aroma frames Greece’s diverse musical history through a contemporary lens and acts as a testament to the current collaborative milieu of the island — a dance between Mediterranean and Middle Eastern instruments, all acoustic and recorded live, with the Mykonos native‘s hovering hand on mixers and synths.

The album is a passionate ode to the musical heritage of the Cyclades from a personal perspective, which comes as no surprise to Valeron's admirers. “There is nothing more beautiful than the sound of music and the aroma of its soul. To inhale is to capture, to experience”. 

This idea has implications concerning how the human mind works, with aroma being one word that we've coined to describe how we perceive what's around us, with its roots in the Late Latin for spice. We take in our surroundings and relay relevant information to the brain through our senses. Is it possible for music to have an aroma, or for the imagination to perceive it in that way?

The opening title track is a reworked traditional folk song from the island of Leros that explores unrequited love. Over the next tracks, this reflection on suffering is tempered by downtempo psychedelic soundscapes such as "Eliana" and "Noema" that sit seamlessly into Valeron’s discography of floor fillers. Multi-instrumentalists Gabriel Russel, Sophia Mermigka, Panagiotis Gotsis, Thodoris Evangelou, and Antonis Kaliouris — who also play regularly in Valeron’s touring band — feature throughout the album, embellishing each track with their own personal touches: from other tech-tinged folk songs such as "Rebetis" to an emotive cover of Sting's "Fragile" and Sezen Aksu's "Istanbul", the album encourages the Cretan lyra, clarinet, oud, guitar, bouzouki, kanun, and kaval to follow a script that adheres to tradition yet leaves ample space for playful instrumentation.

A dedicated denizen of the island’s club scene, Valeron has his residency as DJ and his live band performing every Saturday at Scorpios Mykonos for a number of years. 
Aroma marks the Scorpios in-house music label’s first album and Valeron’s second release on the label following up from his January 2022 E.P. Aminta.

Customary with every birthday bash we throw, this year we’ve doubled up with a label showcase at Amsterdam Dance Event, and a 2-part special release celebrating four years of your favourite Berlin based label.

Through the many moments that have made our label, this year has been no different for pushing our sound passionately across the World’s dance-floors, festivals and beyond. Over the last 12 months we’ve had 12 releases, including EP’s from key artists MUUI and Yoram, we’ve had Jonas Saalbach and THe WHite SHadow blow everyone out of the park with killer releases, Amentia and Foreign Guest gave us remarkable debuts, MUUI and Marc Poppcke gave us their long-awaited debut albums, and if that wasn’t enough, we teamed up with some of the best in the game to give you some deadly remixes from the likes of Einmusik, Solee, Los Suruba and Rashid Ajami – what a year!

You’d think with turning 4, it’d be easy to sit back and enjoy the ride? Yet Crossfrontier Audio won’t stop, we’re gearing up for another year and we’re gunning for our 50th release too! The next of which is a mix of label favourites and exciting new artists who feature on our 2-part 4 Years of Crossfrontier Audio, due for release mid of October – stay in the mix as you will not be disappointed, with a nod to the past and a look to the future, we certainly have a few surprises for you.

Lastly, we’d like to thank everyone involved with us over the last 4 years thus far, be it an avid listener, a DJ playing out our signature sound, or one of the many creative artists we work with – it’s you who we do it for, and we’ll continue crossing frontiers.

It's good to have the Dutch duo @cyantist returning on our label @aftertech-records with a mindblowing 5 track EP, including two remixes made by Pandhora and The Note V. We call Cyantist the masters of epic and atmospheric techno and this EP will show you why.
'The March of April' is a true example of what atmosphere the guys from Cyantist can create. Gently the track starts with a lovely light arpeggio and some slowly played guitar strings. Suddenly a female voice comes in and fills the track with glory. Especially when a male bass voice is added, an adventurous musical story is about to begin. When the beat takes ove, with a slowly evolving arpeggio, it gives us a feeling of joy and sadness at the same time.
'Clockwork' is the second original on this EP. It kicks off with a tense rhythm that makes us curious about what is going to happen in this melodic saga. High and sweet voices are supported by bassy monk-like chanting. All together with the joyful melody, this track is the perfect theme for a story with a happy end.
'Nocturnal' is the final original track on this record. The typical Cyantist rhythm, with groovy toms and glitchy shakers, is the basis of this track. A clear and sharp arpeggio gives a nice crunch to the whole. When a hopeful melody is introduced we can say that Nocturnal is a track full of melancholy and happiness.
The guys from the French duo Pandhora remixed 'The March of April' and made a very chilled out ethereal track out of it. A very recognizable repeating melody is continuously present in this track and sounds very well together with the singing of the voices. In the break, just the voices and a gentle brass melody is hearable. Slowly the instruments, shakers, and voices are added to build up to an epic climax. However, the old repeating melody is taking over and brings the track back to its relaxed vibe immediately.
The Note V managed with his remix of 'Nocturnal' to add a dark and deep house flavor to the EP. A catchy, groovy rhythm with dark sounds turns the original of Cyantist into a mysterious story. The original melancholic melody is backed up by the creative use of percussion and effects.
Just once in a while, there is a split second of silence in the rhythm to make the track even more mysterious.

Anturage and Amnesia Haze’s alias, Fake Mood, ranges from "charming electronica to more dancefloor-oriented grooves.” As a means to push this sound, the Russian duo launched Parallel Lives in 2019. The label follows a December premiere by welcoming another pair of artists. Juan recently launched a new project to express his current state of mind. As Roze (FR), the Frenchman now presents “Borokhe.” Remixing its B-side, Zakir also makes a remarkable debut. His interpretation of “Eisor” seamlessly blends rich beats, acidic arps and dusty flutes.

Archetypal rhythms, otherworldly melodies, and galaxies of possibility converge in Pandhora, a solarpunk-inspired, electronic music project whose France-based founders, Amine and Rémi, seek community over accolades and wonder over predictability. 

Disenchanted with the confines of the corporate world, the duo left their respective engineering jobs in 2015 to embark on a sonic quest. Fusing psychedelia and electronica with moods of melancholia, mystery, and bliss, they began to craft in music their vision for personal and collective empowerment: the curation of dreams, the embrace of freedom, and reverence for the Earth.

The band’s emphasis on instrumental improvisation and artistic collaboration reflects their drive to innovate, share, and experiment. Pandhora’s music, and especially their live shows, elicit strong emotions and deep catharsis. Free-form, unstructured sounds combine elements of vocals, guitar, and keyboard. Ethereal rhythms and eclectic  euphonies usher audiences on a journey with the artists into collective dreamscapes and deep states of consciousness where the possible can be imagined and the true self envisioned.
