Paper Recordings celebrates its 25th birthday in 2019 and its relationship with Norway stretches back almost as far.

In 1997 Those Norwegians' Kilpisjärvi EP (Rune Lindbaek, Torbjørn Brundtland of Röyksopp & Ole Mjøs) was released and helped blueprint the Nordic cosmic, left-field take on house, disco and Balearic that has gone on to conquer the world. Hell, we even made an award winning documentary about it; 'Northern Disco Lights'.
 
The label has helped break generations of Norwegian producers including Proviant Audio, De Fantastiske To, Diskobeistet, Vinny Villbass, Rave-enka and Bøka / Lakehouse as well as release music by legends like Ralph Myerz, Lindstrøm, Mental Overdrive and Erot.  

Now things have come full circle as Paper go back to Tromsø where everything and nothing has changed. It is still a town inside the arctic circle a long way from anywhere that allows its creativity to develop away from the media spotlight.  It is also still turning out amazing producers who have the potential to flip the game once again and go on to be the next Todd Terje or Lindstrøm.

For their fourth installment of the “Roar Groove meets Dirt Crew” series, Dirt Crew present a new set of shimmering and dubbed out Revenge cuts. After the last episode, The Revenge has been very busy working his “live” studio set up to come up with a whole range of new sounds. Dirt Crew noted that 'these best represent his unique style, and once you hear these in a club you instantly know 'That’s a Revenge Tune', something we have always loved about his sound.'

We feature ‘Prizefighter’, a perfect track to close the EP, a typical stab-y Revenge chugger, loose and floating, synth lines underlaid by a distinctive beat.

Andy Ash has been quietly sneaking out seriously good analogue-driven electronic music on some of the best underground labels for over a decade. The Liverpool-based producer, DJ and visual artist has graced the likes of Chicago’s Stilove4music, NYC’s On The Prowl, Sydney’s People Must Jam and has remixed Fantastic Man for Detroit label Kolour LTD amongst many others. The bottom line is that he’s definitely one of the UK’s unsung heroes when it comes to deep, raw, Chicago and Detroit-influenced house music and we’re proud to welcome him to Delusions Of Grandeur with an amazing three tracker entitled the Bottleneck EP.

The title track opens with snappy hats, flappy congas and sloppy baseline all sitting perfectly in the mix and with a looseness that is much harder to achieve that it may seem. A simple synth melody doubles up the bassline while an extra square wave lead adds that little extra hook without distracting us from the bouncing groove. With Bottleneck, less is definitely more.

Flipping over we have Hump, an altogether darker affair with a twisting acid line joining distorted 808 drums and tripped-out snippets of spoken word coming in and out of focus. The low-slung bumpy groove and spacey synth parts make this a compelling warehouse track which will draw everyone into it’s seductive confines.

Closing the release we have Actual Price, a shuffling, deep groover with rumbling low end and machine-like analogue synth part skipping around the crunchy beats. A cerebral yet punchy and dynamic closer to an excellent release!

@samruffillo has been pricking up our ears for a minute, and now two cuts on @boogie-cafe-records' 'Bologna On The Move' EP — highlighting artists from Ruffillo's hometown — furthers our interest. 'U Make Me Sing' is a deep disco roller with a little broken beat rhythm in its infectious snare pattern, and its vibe is reminiscent of late '90s / early 2000s Versatile.

Son Of Sound loads the chamber and pulls the trigger on appropriation in underground music and the submissive behavior that strengthens corporate, media and government control. This one is dark, unapologetic and is talking to you! ‘Smoke’ is a 120bpm grinding ode to the underground’s gate keepers. The lyrics chide - “Now, now you wanna clean up your act but you don’t hear music that’s black. You just hear music, Is that a fact?” ‘Critical Thinking’ features the lyrical acrobatics by underground DJ and producer veteran Elbee Bad (The Prince Of Dance). Elbee’s lyrics sit on top of a soulful yet dark and twisted groove made for the early mornings of the NY underground’s past. Elbee’s hook is infectious and anchors down verses that are tailored made for those
confused and abandoned masses that were fed-up long before the pandemic. Yes the tracks feature his signature twisted sound of samples, synths, jazz, funk, hip-hop and house, but this one is deﬁnitely about the message. Listen to the words.
