Sara Warner recently caught up with Brett Deubner, renowned viola soloist and professor of viola at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College New York.

Brett, who is currently accepting scores through a Featured Recording Opportunity with PARMA, recently released MOTHER EARTH on Navona Records. He joined us to discuss the environmental themes and craft behind the album, along with the collaborative drive that led to this project with Latin GRAMMY-winner pianist Allison Brewster Franzetti.

The conch shell exemplifies the versatility, sublimity, and transcendence of nature - a natural dwelling, a biological work of art, and, as shown by the City of Tomorrow, an instrument. NATURE, the debut Ravello Records release by the City of Tomorrow wind quintet - consisting of Elise Blatchford, flute; Stuart Breczinski, oboe; Camila Barrientos Ossio, clarinet; Laura Miller, bassoon; and Leander Star, horn - showcases works by four contemporary composers that explore the evolution of humanity's relationship with nature. 

David Lang's breathless illustrates the tireless flow of time - the constant and steady movement of events - each instrument playing the same phrase throughout which overlap and create a continuously evolving unity. The innate balance between order and chaos is portrayed in Luciano Berio's ricorrenze, a piece in which interweaving virtuosic lines are grown from a single unison note, like sprouting from a seed. Inspired by a fantastical encyclopedia of real and imagined animals, "...a certain chinese cyclopaedia..." by Denys Bouliane creates a musical taxonomy of the sounds of bebop à la Charlie Parker, making Darwinian observations about the infinite and complex variations in human-made arts. Nat Evan's Music for Breathing is a foil to the occidental concept that nature is nothing but "beautiful" or "peaceful," emphasizing that nature does not discriminate, all biological events occur without favor. Through their virtuosic interpretations, the City of Tomorrow explores human emotional responses to the ever-changing biosphere and how we find new ways to participate in an awe-inspiring, often turbulent, and always indiscriminate environment.

Arthur Gottschalk is recipient of a number of accolades, including the Charles Ives Prize of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Special Distinction by the ASCAP Rudolph Nissim Award in 2009 for Requiem: For the Living, Gold and Silver Medals from the Global Music Awards, The American Prize in Composition in 2013 and 2014, annual awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers since 1980, and Arthur Gottschalk Day (October 16) from the City of Houston TX.

From poking stove elements with pencils, to recording the ambience of a teapot, and playing balcony railings, mnk is an album which restlessly re-imagines everyday sounds. FenGi is the moniker of the Turkish sound artist Altuğ Kaptan, and mnk represents his extended examination of the vibratory and the resonant. It is an album which blurs the boundary between object and instrument, at one point Altuğ performs by simply opening and closing doors, at another he reworks recordings of the violin. Altuğ describes himself as someone who ceaselessly records sounds, seeking spontaneous moments amid the everyday. In his debut solo album mnk we discover an artist both courageous and frenetic, who sitting amid the boiling stove pots, and the sliding doors of his home finds music.

Welcome to the new Pluie/Noir podcast series. 8 years after our debut we decided to press the reboot button and return to our roots. With a new format and back to a regular monthly schedule, Pluie/Noir Interscapes will feature audio collages, mixes, live interviews and live recordings from P/N artists, friends, and other collectives we admire.

Because less is more, instead of the usual triptych format, this series will feature one single A3-A1 visual interpretation of the music by a graphic artist. The artwork will be available to purchase in poster format on our rebooted Bandcamp page very soon, with cassettes or CD-r of the mixes as a bonus.
