Aix is the latest work from Italian artist Giuseppe Ielasi and the follow-up to 2007’s August (12k, 12k1044). WIth Aix we see Ielasi building his layered, atmospheric music around rhythmic grids. Most of the time these are quite irregular and the pulses are not neccessarily stable or clear. Where his previous work approached sound in a linear fashion Aix imposes a strong vertical development with the aforementioned grid and a production consisting of ons and offs, employing as much improvisation as Ielasi’s previous work, but in a different way.

Despite the self-imposed grid structure, Aix relies heavily on randomization. Not in the traditional sense of sound placement but instead of the spatialization of sounds, echoes, reverbs and the stereo image. As a result, Aix has an amazing sense and clarity of space as the small fragments of sound breathe and find their own place in the mix, thanks to Ielasi’s sublime skills as a mixer and engineer.

Ielasi relied heavily on numerous short samples and combining them in ways that fell into his groove; some found from others' recordings and many more recorded during the past year. We hear fragments of percussive (acoustic) objects, drums, piano, trumpet, guitar, and, of course, synthetic textures. Although there is a distinct rhythmic pulse to Aix, Ielasi manages to mold it into something wonderfully languid and warm... and strangely inviting.

"Chemins Secondaires" is extract from Quanta Records’ third release, Correspondances, a mini LP by αίών (aeon) that combines experimental techno, ambient and musique concrète elements.
The tracks of the album communicate through similar sounds, noises and rhythmic patterns. But while atmospheres diverge, there is a constant exchange from cold and industrial to solar and melodious so as to form a complex and balanced ensemble.
αίών’s has placed randomness at the centre of his creative process. Computing and random programming have allowed the artist to explore new structures and to no longer simply consider a glitch as an error, but rather as a primal source of novel sound.
The outcome is a collection of sinuous and contemplative Correspondances that aims at contorting the listener’s subjective experience of time.

SIREN's Moonbow celebrates all things piano with a drone-leaning contribution to the Concept in Practice series. After all, it is Piano Day.

"Started 4 years ago by German composer Nils Frahm, Piano Day falls on the 88th day of each year (this year it's March 29th) and many events and releases come together to celebrate the magic of this (conventionally) 88-key instrument. For a while I’ve been wanting to make a mix of ambient and drone music that is centered around sustained piano notes, and today felt like the perfect time to release it. Recently, meditation has been my lifeline whilst being essentially house bound for two months due to health reasons, and I owe so much to ambient music for being such an incredible tool for healing — so I hope this mix can also help others too.

Sonically, this mix is as much about the moments of silence as it is about the music itself, with each new track emerging from a mist left by the one before. I wanted to make a mix that honours the piano’s ability to beautifully bridge the gap between acoustic and electronic music." – Moonbow

The combined forces of Frederik Valentin & Loke Rahbek first found a way into the world in 2017 with the album 'Buy Corals Online'. Together they now present 'Elephant', an eight-track album that composes an inquisitive space with its parts.

The economy of movement across Rahbek and Valentin's new collaborative album makes for a gentle transmission of its abstract intimacies. This presence, which we caught glimpses of on their previous work 'Buy Corals Online', is shaped by the delicate interplay between acoustic instrumentation and synthetically rendered sounds. Hauntingly melodic at times, the album feels like a suite of uncanny lullabies that grant access to realities that can only be found in dreams. Rahbek and Valentin are always leading us somewhere and showing us something—one piece of the scene at a time, coming and going with different parts of a puzzle that eventually settles into a complete form. And through all this we perceive an inviting restlessness on their behalf, encouraging us to stray further and further into the private space of 'Elephant'.

Valentin is perhaps best known for his work in the exquisite atypical pop group Kyo, though his wide- reaching music and videography practices covertly underpin his flagship projects. Most recently, Valentin has been working with Yung Lean as both producer on his 'Nectar' album as Jonatan Leandoer127 as well as on their commission for Sweden's Cullberg Ballet. As Croatian Amor, Rahbek has made similar forays into unworldly pop and his work with Christian Stadsgaard as Damien Dubrovnik has been as critical as their co- founding of Posh Isolation.

Modest interventions from processed field-recordings and semi-erupting synths invite you to zoom in enough to hear the human hand. An attention to listening, to how sounds cradle the small movements and gestures that naturally accompany the playing of guitar, piano, and viola, is acutely developed by Rahbek and Valentin. It's in this way that 'Elephant' persuades us that even small stories unfurl into the most intricate and tremendous of sagas.

Dougherty Island - 120º W, 59º S
Captain Dougherty of the English whaling ship James Stewart, discovers the island in 1841 and describes it as 5–6 miles long with a high bluff to the northeast and a valley in the middle covered in snow. Dougherty's discovery is confirmed by English captains in 1859, and 1891. Sailing through the area during Shackleton's Antarctic expedition of 1908–1909, Captain Davis, Chief Officer of the Nimrod suggests that fog banks or icebergs had deceived Dougherty and his successors. Nonetheless, a license granting “exclusive rights to occupy the island for the purposes of removing guano and other fertilising substances” is issued to the Norwegian whaler HJ Bull by the British Government in 1913.
