This song was originally written as an acoustic track with just piano and vocals, and has been through multiple levels of feedback to reach its current stage. I have tried to approach overcoming isolation and depression in a way that is generally relatable, and to build to an optimistic conclusion. It's in Db Major, which is the musical equivalent of someone putting on a happy face.

Good Enough For You

I think many would assume, based on the instrumentation typical in any given Interbay track dropped here on SoundCloud, that I must be a big fan of synthwave--the current trend to revisit the pastel era of synthpop as remembered from the sounds of the early eighties.  

I like synthwave fine--but, I think it is also clear that my use of synths (and other technology) is not as neatly defined as it is turning out that synthwave is being defined by...  My criticism, and a light one at that, is that synthwave has seemingly calcified into only one particular sound that references synth music and an imagined 80s that never felt so clean cut at the time.  

(Have I mentioned lately that I'm an old?  Yeah.  Not to get all James Murphy in here, but...I was there.)  

When I embrace the term "mutant pop" to describe what emerges from Phantom Laboratories West and gets stamped with the name Interbay, I mean it.  Yes, I use the sounds of analog synthesizers and drum machines--and, frankly, any other sound that happens to tickle my brain while spending time deep in the Labs...but, as should be clear to anyone paying attention, I'm not constrained by the limitations of genre (or, regrettably, proper song construction or music theory.)  

So, I don't really know what to call "Hostilities"--today's Interbay track drop (you know that a never heard before Interbay track drops EVERY SINGLE DAY--so far!--for coming up on 500 straight days???)--other than mutant pop...(well, maybe synth pop--but this isn't Human League, Soft Cell, or Depeche Mode.)  

Unrestricted, but not necessarily experimental.  This is what pop music could sound like if we could unshackle ourselves from formulas, strict genre definitions, and algorithm-based decision making during the "artistic" process.  

Now, is there a market for this?  Well, I like it...  

(The answer to the question, by the way, is "No, not really..." but is that the only metric by which we can judge creative personal expression?)  

(The answer to that question, by the way is "Yeah, probably...this may be late stage capitalism, but it is still capitalism.")

"Hostilities" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

I do love it when your brain just locks into an idea and it feels effortless to create something.  

I also like it when MY brain does that, too!  And that's what happened with "Quibble"--the latest Interbay track to drop exclusively here on SoundCloud.    

At 114bpm, it grooves instead of sprints.  The palette of sound colors is limited to just a few and the grind of repetition is a feature on this track, not a bug.  There is progression and there is acceleration, as the energy level of the song does built throughout the tracks length.  

And the lyrics construct a narrative that is about storytelling techniques and escaping a seemingly inevitable fate--"the magic of quibbles."  That sure feels like a worthy topic to make an Interbay song about!  

Is there at least a little bit of Rufus Du Sol influence here?  I think so.  Your mileage may vary, of course.  

"Keep your eyes out for those sly quibbles."  

Heading into the weekend, this slightly dark but still worthy of an enthusiastic dance track feels perfectly timed.  Hopefully you'll give this one a listen, a like, a repost and share.  Add it to a groovy dance playlist.  Leave a comment.
