This song was originally written as an acoustic track with just piano and vocals, and has been through multiple levels of feedback to reach its current stage. I have tried to approach overcoming isolation and depression in a way that is generally relatable, and to build to an optimistic conclusion. It's in Db Major, which is the musical equivalent of someone putting on a happy face.

The Illusion

"Tell me you didn't just make a hard house track about sleep apnea..."  

Can't.  Because I did.  

That's right, today's Interbay track drop is a track about apnea that doesn't suddenly stop, scaring the whole dancefloor that the beat might not come back in this time.  

It is like there's continuous positive beat pressure on this track.  

And THAT was the key to unlocking this track for me, as I've been working on this track for awhile--but it was more of a rock song for much of that time.  The drums were a bit retro and it just felt sluggish--like when you know you need sleep but you can't fall asleep...and you're sleepwalking in your brain.  

I knew it needed something to give it some spark, some bounce, some groove...  Everything seemed to come together when I added a fairly simple hard house beat to it--think classic era Tidy Trax sort of thing.  And, in most cases, I left the original beat--the rock one--in the mix (when you hear the cowbells, you'll know.)  

With that groove and a willingness just to let that groove run (which was a fight I as having in my head, as you know I crave the dopamine for constant novelty), this works.  Might not be anyone's favorite Interbay track, unless you love dance songs that snore, but it definitely works.

I have my own history with sleep apnea.  I'd never heard of it before I shared a room with someone who had it back when the Winter Music Conference was still being held at the Fountainebleu in Miami Beach.  It was terrifying, hearing someone snore incredibly loudly and then suddenly stop...and you wait, you wait, you wait...and finally he'd start breathing again.  (R.I.P. PD)  

When I was heavier, I used to snore--pretty loudly, I was told by a few significant others over the years.  It was all linked.  I was overweight, I had developed diabetes, I probably had untreated sleep apnea, my body was producing more red blood cells than it needed and not enough testosterone than I would have wanted.  

I did one of those overnight sleep studies...and it was the worst night of my life.  Worse than the worst night I spent in the hospital when I was being treated for Burkitt's Lymphoma.  Worse even than the night my wife passed away (thankfully, she passed quite peacefully.)  It was awful and with where CPAP technology was at the time, I couldn't imagine being able to use it.  

And then, my diabetes medication was switched to Mounjaro.  And I lost a bunch of weight, I stopped snoring, my blood sugar numbers were incredible, my red blood cell count got back to normal.  (Still working on the testosterone thing--being widowed and not dating means that isn't my highest priority, but it would be nice if it would be.)  

Maybe I produced this track to remind me...to scare me...into not letting my weight ever get like it was?

Good Enough For You

I do love it when your brain just locks into an idea and it feels effortless to create something.  

I also like it when MY brain does that, too!  And that's what happened with "Quibble"--the latest Interbay track to drop exclusively here on SoundCloud.    

At 114bpm, it grooves instead of sprints.  The palette of sound colors is limited to just a few and the grind of repetition is a feature on this track, not a bug.  There is progression and there is acceleration, as the energy level of the song does built throughout the tracks length.  

And the lyrics construct a narrative that is about storytelling techniques and escaping a seemingly inevitable fate--"the magic of quibbles."  That sure feels like a worthy topic to make an Interbay song about!  

Is there at least a little bit of Rufus Du Sol influence here?  I think so.  Your mileage may vary, of course.  

"Keep your eyes out for those sly quibbles."  

Heading into the weekend, this slightly dark but still worthy of an enthusiastic dance track feels perfectly timed.  Hopefully you'll give this one a listen, a like, a repost and share.  Add it to a groovy dance playlist.  Leave a comment.
