These are Interbay tracks that, for various reasons, have not yet been listened to by at least 100 people.  Some of them are some of the first Interbay tracks on SoundCloud, others are in genres that aren't well represented by listeners here on SoundCloud, and some just got ignored by the algorithm.  

If a track on this list gets at least 100 listens, it will be taken off this playlist...and it would be my hope that someday this playlist will be entry--because all of these misfit toys deserve to end up under someone's Christmas tree.

(As I type this, there are a couple of songs that haven't been listened to by anyone.  I feel bad for them.  Maybe you could give  some of these tracks a listen?)

The Undeservedly Ignored Side of Interbay (they just want to be loved, is that so wrong?)

With guitars a la The Temper Trap (or U2), keyboards a la Kraftwerk, and some processed samples...again, this was made quickly (one afternoon) and simply...for more of a pop vibe.

I'm not sure Elizabethan Trance is going to become a thing, but if it ever does, this is where it started.  Interbay, Shakepseare, Sir Ian.  It's got a good beat and you can dance to it (plus, the message is always important to share...sadly.)

"Strangers" by Interbay *SoundCloud Exclusive*

"These are the last days of disco" is what the main sample in this track says (though, you might also hear "Diva, the last space disco"--I'm choosing to ignore that.)  Choosing that vocal sample drove me to include touchstones of disco into what was originally a progressive house track--so, you'll hear strings, diva vocals, disco whistles, skritchy guitars, latin percussion, etc. (and trombones...not sure that was ever a disco thing, but I think it works.)  

Also, befitting the theme--consider this an extended disco 12" single mix...as it is, probably, a bit longer than it needs to be.  Certainly longer than a radio edit would be.

The record store that I was a co-manager at had a big, powerful heating unit right over the front door--and the name on that heating unit was REZNOR.  Not sure that has anything to do with this track--it might.  Running already processed drums through a guitar distortion rack turns this into a pretty downward spiralling machine, which might be a bit too on the nose.

"Terrain" by Interbay *SoundCloud Exclusive*

I have to be honest--I'm not entirely sure what this is.  It started out as an ambient instrumental track, but that's not what it ended up being.  It is a midtempo, vocal, synth pop track with bass house elements.  Or something like that.  Maybe I should have titled this track "Whatever"?

What we have here is a melancholy pop song with a female vocal hook and some pretty acoustic guitars.  I pushed the bass louder, so this midtempo house track has some oomph--didn't want it to feel too precious.  In the midsong, I channeled my inner Bernie Worrell for some squelchy funky synths and a bit of grit.  I am well pleased with how this one turned out.  You might even be able to studio to it!

"Someday" by Interbay *SoundCloud Exclusive*

"Thought that you needed me" is where this track starts and it races through a flurry of break beats (the original title, "Broken", was in reference to the singer's heart and the breakneck-paced break beats.)  This track is too fast to be speed garage and, probably, too slow to be jungle/hardcore/d&b...and for any grognards who recognize the vocal samples...shhhhhhhh.  (For those of you who don't, just know that this is experimental medicine and it points to a day when we can go beyond just treatment.)    

I have a lot of fondness for the all-too-brief era of speed garage (which lives on in a different form through UK garage) as in my days as a club dj, speed garage tracks were consistent floor fillers.  I think that's why I indulged a bit by adding a coda after "Do Most Anything (Broken)" officially ends:  a BlenderSample Bonus Speed Garage-tribute Remix.  It's a quickmix of some classic Speed Garage sounds, speech and fx to end on a burst of energy (especially as the singer was fading as the track neared the finish line, as he must have accepted his romantic fate by then...and I'm not sure, but I think you can hear evidence of every Kubler-Ross step on the way.)  

This track has rapidfire tuned 808s, altogether too many toms, both droning and neuro basses, and both fluid and vintage synths.

"Do Most Anything (Broken)" by Interbay (with special BlenderSample remix) *SoundCloud Exclusive*

Portbury.  It's near Portishead.  

But it ISN'T Portishead.  That's for sure.

This is being released on a lazy Sunday morning--thought this indie pop/trip hop song would fit nicely.  It's got female vocals, jazz organ some guitar, backing vocals...and a pleasant vibe.

Some tech-bro rambles about crypto over music that is almost New Beat, in that it is a slowed down nrg/synthpop groove.  There is also the occasional dip into glitchiness.  

It feels sad to me.  Not sure why.  

Also, for some reason, this song reminds me of Doctor Who?  (Perhaps the Madame du Pompadour episode?  The villains were "clockwork" in that.)

"What's up with all these putty-looking-ass whips, y'all?"--H. Green

A fun uptempo punky thing with obnoxious synths and a relentless race forward this track is a favorite of mine--both for how it turned out and how it came together.

I watched one of my favorite vlogs and felt inspired to create this.  While this is not sponsored by anyone, I hope this video makes you want to shop from the Good Store (where one can join the Awesome Socks Club) or watch some episodes of Crash Course, or, perhaps, sign-up for the Dropout streaming service by June 12th so you can see a particularly anticipated stand-up comedy special.  

I would like to think that if the subject of this track ever heard this track, he would be amused at what an old man (who owns both of his books and is anticipating socks...and who can totally relate to having had cancer and then doing stand-up comedy about it) can create in homage to someone doing wonderful work as well as being entertaining as all get out.  

(And, most importantly, I hope that he will not sue me.  I don't monetize anything I do, yet...so, please treat this for what it is...an homage from a fan.  And, absolutely, if it amuses you...feel free to share it with anyone you might like.)

 

"PLAW" by Interbay *SoundCloud Exclusive*

"Cold plunge.  Sweatbox.  Sweatbox.  Cold plunge." 

I've recently posted a track called "Discotheque"--but that track wasn't disco.  

This track is, actually, disco.  Or a mixture of disco and house and cut & paste and funk.  Is it the modern genre of "Nu-Disco"?  Not sure.  I'm old enough to remember Disco, first time around--I may not be the best arbiter of what constitutes "Nu" or not.  (I believe Lidell Townsell probably is, though. IYKYK)

Trainspotters might notice some classic cut & paste assets in the mix.  (As this IS a BlenderSample production, that's not unexpected.)  All in fun, of course.

Fun IS the name of the game here.  This isn't a solemn or sad disco track.  This is fun (as opposed to goofy, like Rick Dees & His Cast of Idiots.  Again, IYKYK)

I thought, as this is being released on a Saturday, that this track would be part of the soundtrack of a great night of dancing.  In other words, Interbay's gonna make you sweat.  

(...though, again, THAT song wasn't disco either.)  

  

"Sweatbox" by Interbay *SoundCloud Exclusive*

"Can Interbay do jazz?"  

That's the question this track attempts to answer...and that answer is..."Sort of???"  

I mean, it's jazzy.  But it is, ultimately, more Interbay than anything (there is no option to pick "Interbay" for primary genre here on SoundCloud, so "Jazz & Blues" it is...)  

The track started when I found this wonderful (and royalty free) vocal sample that reminded me of Billie Holiday (or first album Amy Winehouse, perhaps?) and from there, it built itself around that--with piano, drums, bass...and then, a potentially curious choice to add a chorus-laden acoustic guitar into the arrangement.   

Acoustic guitar isn't really on the color palette for the cool jazz vibe I was aiming at--but, it fit right in with an Interbay attempt at cool jazz.  Threw some chorus on that and off I went!  

I tried to maintain a structure for the track--this wasn't going to be free jazz.  The vocal sample would anchor a "home section" (it would be confusing to label it a chorus, as jazz uses that term differently than pop music does) and then, instead of a "verse," I would focus on one instrument for a few bars before returning home.  (Not quite a jazz chorus, not quite a "solo"...but a "focus" where an instrument gets to play around a bit...)  

...again, it's not proper jazz--it is definitely Interbay.  

And then, as I do, I had a delightful idea for an easter egg...so, I once again strapped on my Icarus wings to sneak that in--and that lead me to add in some smokey saxophone...and voila!  "Selfishly" by Interbay.  

My own critique?  The drums could use some work.  I didn't use a jazz kit, but I still tried to give a sense of some ghost notes--something, as a drummer, I've never been good at...  (As my former Cremation Dance bandmates could attest to, as a drummer, I'm a pretty good frontman.)  

It gets extremely busy and a bit too chaotic in the section where the drums are meant to get the focus--and I think that bleeds into the track as a whole.  I also think I went overboard on the cymbals (especially the hi-hats) which gives the track a more manic feel than the cool jazz I was aiming for.  

And despite me calling upon my experience as a saxophone player in elementary school band, I couldn't make the stacatto octave jumps I wanted to include in this track--leading to a smoother, less dynamic sax focus section than I'd imagined.  (I tried to do those jumps--it did not sound good, so I took an alternate approach...you're welcome?)

...that said, and acknowledging my bias, I think it works.  I think I would sneak this onto a mixtape, back in the day (when those were a thing), next to some first album Everything But The Girl (which is a particular favorite of mine.)

This latest Interbay SoundCloud Exclusive takes you on quite an adventurous journey (and as the LONGEST Interbay track posted here, so far, it had better!)  

(*Please note that there is a framing device before the song starts and as the song ends that extends the track time more than the song.)  

Once again, a bunch of genres and references are tossed into a blender which is then switched on with the power on puree.  There's some audio documentary interview clips, some dj scratching, a bunch of brass, a couple of movie dialogue samples, some doo-wop inspired harmony singing, some spoken word, keyboards that sound like bells, two entirely different drum kits, a prominent electric bass, an unexpected jazz drum solo...and more.  

There is a theme, there is a coherent direction--it's not just an absolute mess...but it IS a bit of a jumble, so make certain your seatbelt is fastened.  

Looking for a roadmap?  Nostalgia is definitely a good place to start.

"Paging Through Your Scrapbooks" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

Did someone say "been awhile since" Interbay has posted a "proper rock song???"  

Yes.  Someone did.  

I did.  Yesterday.  

So, let's do this!  

Including the songs that were posted on Interbay's Facebook page, I think THIS is the most credible rock song I've managed to commit to...ummm....whatever the digital equipment to "tape" would best fit in such a cliched statement.  

And yet, it still has electronic elements to it--bolstering the blistering tempo of this rather dark alternative post-punk rock track.  Very much inline with the Interbay vibe.  

Obviously, this track will appeal more to anyone who has watched the HBO "Chernobyl" mini-series...but even for those of you who haven't (but should, it's quite good...even if it might stray occasionally from perfect accuracy), I think you'll get into it, too.  

I see some similarities with this track that some of you might recognize--there's definitely a dollop of "Public Image" by Public Image Ltd.  The ending seems like a proper homage to the Adam and the Ants b-side/rarity/fan-favorite "Beat My Guest."  And, surprisingly, when the keyboards join the guitars for an instrumental bridge--my head goes to the Sex Pistols classic material (surprising, because they're not a band one would associate with keyboards.)  

At the risk of sounding even more self-indulgent than I normally am in these descriptions, I could see "A Zed 5" as a song that would have fit on the never produced second album for my band DangerScience--and it could have been a monster of a track for either the live version of DangerScience or my previous band, Cremation Dance.  (Of course, you'd need a time machine for either of those to have occurred.)  

For those of you here for the purely electronic stuff, there'll be plenty more of that to come, I'm sure...but THIS is definitely a song that fits what Interbay is now (though, if Crash wanted me to...I'd attribute this to DangerScience instead.  Legally, this is as DangerScience as "Frightening Things" and could sit along side "Aircrash" and "Goodbye?")

"A Zed 5" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

Is this the first time that Interbay has posted a sub-four minute song on two consecutive days?  (EDIT: Did the research, and yes, this is the first time that I've posted Interbay tracks that are under four minutes long on two days in a row.  The closest combination in the back catalog was when "Kaleidoscope" (4:26) was followed by "Juggernaut" (3:57).  

...and THIS song wasn't even supposed to be TODAY'S upload!  I thought I knew exactly what song I was going to post today...and then yesterday, during what turned out to be a rather boring Super Bowl (in that it was never close--the Eagles dominated the game in a successful, but not terribly entertaining way.  Kendrick was great at halftime, of course.  Loved seeing Serena losing herself to dance!), I created a new song...so, I knew that when I woke up today, I'd have to choose between the song I was planning on posting and the song I completed during the game.  

...except that after the game was over and after the dinner that followed, I started a new track...and it came together really quickly (helped by the fact that I specifically wanted to do a tracck with a very limited sound palette--small enough that it could be performed by a live band.)  I'd say it was about 75% finished by the time I fell asleep (and, as often happens, I fell asleep with my headphones on...and the unfinished track repeating all through the night.    That's probably not healthy, right?)  

So, when I woke up, I knew what the track needed, and I quickly finished it up.  I've spent the past two hours on the mixing/mastering stage (too often, I'll zip through that stage in my eagerness to share...which prompts me to comment that it could probably use a remix, or an edit) and now I've decided that THAT SONG, the one I started late last night, would be what I'd share with you today.  

And what is it?  The best way I can describe "Say You Love Me" (and no, it's not a Fleetwood Mac cover. ;) ) is "imagine a ska band being asked to play a soul song and ending up with a shuffle based midtempo soul/ska/rock/pop thing."  The drums are playing a shuffle beat throughout, the bass, a couple of synth stabs, and the Farfisa organ...and then there's a trumpet, that is more on the ska side.  And, other than the vocals, that's it.  Again, really simple--by design.  (I had to fight the urge to introduce a second synth or find room for a skritchy guitar--and, for once, I managed to win that fight!)  

I will admit that I'd misheard the lyrics originally.  I thought it was "will you love me"--which would have paired far more easily (and coherently) with the "all night" response line than "say you love me" does...  I mean, who would want someone to keep telling you "I love you" all night long?  (I mean, that would be nice...for like fifteen minutes or so...but all night?  I'd imagine y'all could find better things to do once you've established your feelings?)  

This might be the best of the short length pop songs that Interbay has posted.  It has a beginning, a structure, an ending...and it doesn't suddenly veer off into random directions.  

I'll call it progress and improvement.  (Plenty of random directions to come, I'm sure.)

"Say You Love Me" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

"...il n'y a pas d'orchestre."  

This track is full of electricity and drenched in dread.  One might even say that this track is particularly Lynchian.  

I can't imagine that it would come as a surprise to learn that I've been influenced and inspired by the films of the late David Lynch.  When Cremation Dance, the first band I was in to escape the basement and actually gig, was formed...it was right around the time that "Blue Velvet" had been released--and that strange combination of the quirky mundanity of traditional American life (the way it never really was) with the surreal dreamlike quality of the underbelly of that traditional life...with brief glimpses of the supernatural thrown in to keep you on your toes.  

Plus, in its own weird way--it was pretty damn sexy.  (I don't think Lynch gets enough credit for this...and I'm sure there are multi-thousand word essays online about the psychosexual qualities of Lynch's films and tv work.  Makes me wonder what he'd have done with the whole Luke, Leia and Han thing had he accepted the offer to helm "Return of the Jedi.")  

The source of the Icarus risking dialogue snippets is from what might be Lynch's sexiest (and most confusing to some) film.  Glorious!

Marrying that Lynchian vibe to some grinding midtempo cyberpunk felt very natural to me--I certainly hope that it works for you.  There are synths positively sparking with escaping electricity.  The drums are headache inducing (in a good way?)  Not only are there crunchy guitars, but you've got a muted trumpet that swirls around you, a trombone that bleats and blasts, and a magician who demands your attention as he points out the artificiality of everything you hear.  

There IS no band.  There is, simply, Interbay.

"Listen (Aylala)" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

Before Interbay, my songwriting process was based around the words I write.  Those words would provide the song structure and I would craft the music around those words either by myself or with a songwriting partner, banging the words into shape as the music develops.  Then, most of the time, I would then be the one singing those songs--on stage or in the studio at the original Phantom Labs.  

Interbay has been different.  So far, my Interbay process usually begins with a musical idea.  (It's as close as I've ever come to "jamming".)  There are times when my process begins with a word, and then I see where that takes me musically.  I have not yet done an Interbay track by starting with a structured lyric.  (Sometimes, structure and lyrics gets baked into the track later...but it never "starts" with that.)  

Part of that might be my continued reluctance to sing on Interbay tracks.   (So far, with over 300 SoundCloud Exclusive tracks, only two of them have my voice on them.  BONUS INTERBAY POINTS IF YOU CAN NAME THOSE TWO TRACKS. ;) )  It is still the plan that I start voicing these tracks myself...but, for now, all vocals (and it is a rule that ALL SoundCloud Exclusive tracks have some sort of vocal element) are either royalty free samples (true for today's track), or spoken word text to speech (numerous programs giving me different options there), and occasionally Icarus-threatening "found sounds"--snippets from movies, tv, (checks Icarus current situation) and occasionally other sources.  

I like working with vocals.  It is the way I had been used to working--but the new normal is to create a vocal from various elements...to construct a narrative out of some odds and ends--because you rarely get to use a full song's worth of words, structure, or singing...  (I don't know any singers to come down to Phantom Laboratories West to collaborate.  Another thing I'd like to do someday.)  

Today's track is one of those style songs, where you're hearing a song built around three royalty free vocal samples.  "Out There" was the first one--and for a change, I "un-darked" it (and yes, I know that "un-dark" is not a word...or is it, now?).  The full lyric was "There is Evil...Out There."  The music ideas I had weren't happy, but they weren't "evil" either.  From the same sample pack, but a different collection of songs, came "Truly waiting."  The last vocal sample, "I'm Lost Without You" came from a completely different sample pack, by a different artist.  (OK, there's also some "percussive grunts" in the track too.  Oh, "Percussive Grunts"--good band name, if anyone needs one!)    

What kind of narrative can be built from "I'm Lost Without You, Out There, Truly Waiting"?  And yet, when I heard those samples in connection to the music I made for this track--my imagination filled in all of the details.  I'm hoping that YOUR imagination will do the same when you listen to it.

I kept the arrangement simple--but this is Interbay, nothing is EVER truly simple.  Somehow, I managed to take a synth sound and make it sound like a heavily processed psychedelic guitar...AND I took a guitar sound and made it sound like a bleating trombone.  (It might be a stretch to tag this with shoegaze or darkwave, but those elements are in there.)       

This is a groove.  A vibe.  And, a nice change of pace from the energetic noisy stuff that I've been putting out lately.  I hope you like it.  (...and do all the things I always ask you to do. ;) )

"Lost Without You (Out There)" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

Maslow's may have defined and ranked our hierarchy of needs, but in "Felony," the latest posted track from mutant pop purveyors Interbay, what happens when your wants and your needs are both ill-defined and all encompassing?  

No wonder our vocalist has the blues!  He wants!  He needs!  OWWWWWWWWWWW!!!  

Take a big beefy breakbeat.  Add in some human beatboxing and wubby bass.  Throw some bassy synth pads into the mix at well.  Then, top all of that off with an assortment of blues guitars and some seriously overdriven blues vocals--that, my friends is a crime.  

Not just a misdemeanor either.  This...is a "Felony."  

(The title might not seem intuitive.  I think I was going for a "what can a limitless desire lead to?" connection between our vocalists wants and needs and their obvious pain that they can't satisfy any of them.)  

Like Moby, Primitive Radio Gods, and Fatboy Slim--I knew there could be good stuff mined from the intersection of electronic dance music, breaks, and gospel/blues.  I think the Interbay take on the crossing of these streams is, perhaps, a bit more aggressive than the others mentioned.  

Still works, though.  

At least I think so.  Your mileage may vary, and the only way to find out what your mileage, in regards to "Felony," might be...is to listen to it.  

I would also appreciate it if you gave this track a like, repost it, share it, leave a comment on it, add it to a playlist--that sort of thing definitely helps spread the word about Interbay beyond its current fragile parameters.  Thank you, in advance, for your assistance.  

What could help more than anything, though, would be for you to follow this page for more Interbay track drops. I'm thinking that there should be some more guitar stuff headed your way--maybe some electropunk...maybe even some straight up punk rock?  (I mean, if it is good enough for Superman...and Lois...it should be good for you, me, and Interbay, too!)

"Felony" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

Last night, I watched a YouTube video about the song "River Man" by Nick Drake and I was inspired to craft a song in a similar style.  

(Spoiler:  "Forever In This Moment" doesn't sound ANYTHING like Nick Drake.)  

I had a funny idea for some lyrics and I'd say I was 85% done when suddenly I swerved, veered off course, and landed here this morning with "Forever In This Moment."  

What happened?  Quite simply, the lyrics didn't fit with the vibe of the song I had at the time.  So, I paused and took a second look at what I'd made.  I took out some parts, I added other elements, I changed the arrangement, I swapped out instruments, I gated the hell out of my drums...and suddenly, I had something VERY different.  

So, I took out the lyrics that no longer fit (I'll try to use them sometime in the future) and I found a couple of vocal samples that I felt fit...and suddenly, a completely new narrative for the track revealed itself.  

...this was a seance.  

This was an attempt to speak with the deceased through a medium...or maybe it was just someone so heartbroken that they tried simply to speak to the sky in hopes they could make contact on their own.  

It wasn't what I was thinking when I started this track, but I embraced it and went with it.  

Despite the newly discovered theme, this isn't a spooky song (otherwise, I'd be saving it for a few months).  Instead, this is some 80s style "big music"--and I tried to produce it like I thought Steve Lillywhite might have produced it.  Not only do the pianos sound large and majestic, but there's s major melodic element based around a viola.  (Reminder to myself--write more songs with viola!)  

There are synths, to be sure.  The bass is a synth bass (though I thought many times about swapping that out...but, in the end, I felt like it worked) and there's some glitchy arpeggios going on, too.  

Oh, and did I mention that I managed to get a Rickenbacker guitar sound on here, too?  (That's a rather dumb question, seeing as I can see what I'm writing before I post this...and I know damn well that I haven't mentioned that.  No wonder these descriptions get so long!)  

If "Visitation" was a fun, bouncy slice of dance pop cheese--perfect for a Saturday night...then "Forever In This Moment" feels just as appropriate for a Sunday afternoon.  Or anytime, really...I don't know what your schedule is like.

Thank you for still clicking on this track, even if the thumbnail might have given you some caution.  The music normally associated imagery of the historic American West doesn't usually sound very much like Interbay.  

But, trust me--"He Comes Riding" is SO Interbay.  So, hit play and read along!  

Like yesterday's posted track, "Over the Course of One Night," today's track was a leftover from when I was posting music videos on Facebook.  The only vocal I had at the time was two instances of the gospel blues shout of the title, "He Comes Riding."  

It sat in the Vaults for a long time, until I produced the song "Felony," which I posted about a week ago.  "Felony" is a dance song with redlined throaty shouts of basic wants and needs.  I thought it worked quite well...and I remembered that THIS track (which I had given a temporary project name of "Round the Mountain"--so the fact that our heroic cowboy in the thumbnail is coming from around the mountain is another Interbay easter egg.  (Bonus Interbay points if you didn't need me to tell you that to make a connection between the image and the nursery rhyme.)  

I liked the idea of working with shouty blues vocals.  

Meanwhile, the inspiration I had for the music wasn't actually Western music (in the "Country & Western" use of that term.)  It was actually The Beatles, specifically "Taxman."  So, that means that "He Comes Riding" is also inspired by "Start!" by The Jam.  ;)  

It was only later that I recognized that rather than being sharp and angular, like a Gang of Four song, the single note plucked guitars gave the track a Western feel.  So, call it Americana or Alt-Country if you wish, Vicar.    

There are some rather thick synths in this track and some stutter edits and other modern fx, so I feel less sheepish than perhaps I should in using "Electronic" as the main tag.  (Tracks where I DON'T give "Electronic" as the main tag typically do not get as many listens as the one that I do...so, I'll grab any excuse to do so.)  

It's odd, the thing that took the most time once I decided to grab this project out of the Vaults and get it ready to post today was settling on a title.  There are three distinct vocal sections.  You've got the "When It All Falls Down" part, the "He Comes Riding" part, and the "Baby Please Don't Go" part...and all of them could have given this track its name.  I also spent a fruitless search for a word or phrase that connected all of the various lyrics and the general vibe.  (Does this feel like it was based on an imaginary TV Western show's theme song?  I did...so, I considered calling this "Hi Ho Silver" or "Blazing Side Saddles" or "There's a New Sheriff in Town"--but none of those felt right.  

So, if what you wanted on your Saturday afternoon was a track that blends Teddy Pendergrass style insistent male vocals, Beatles and post-punk angular funk music, with touches of gospel, the blues and even some Western tropes...and a synthesizer and a more complicated than it has to be name--well, how serendipitous, because that's exactly what "He Comes Riding" is!  You're welcome (?!?)  

Hear for yourself and give it a listen.  While you're at it, give a listen to "Felony" and see if you feel there's a connection between the two Interbay songs.  Give a like to the one you like best--or both!
