Insight on the music of this track.  The drums come from 50's Abbey Road Drummer, played via Kontakt 8.  The lead guitar gets its sound from the Ample RB vst (told you it was Rickenbacker-y!).  The strummed acoustic guitar is the Applied Acoustics Strum GS-2--I think the specific patch used was Cold Friday.  The bass is the Ample Bass J, one of the picked patches.  The remaining instrument is a Farfisa Organ (hilariously, the patch is called "Bully Wooly") and that gives it an early Elvis Costello & The Attractions feeling...which is something I've been wanting to try for a long time.  There's a song that's been nearly finished for over two years now that is even more in this vein--still waiting for the final polishes before it can be revealed.  Hope I didn't just steal it's thunder! )  So, yeah..."electronic" in that the plugins are...but no synths that sound like synths for a change.  And yet, it is STILL Interbay!

Good Enough For You

I do love it when your brain just locks into an idea and it feels effortless to create something.  

I also like it when MY brain does that, too!  And that's what happened with "Quibble"--the latest Interbay track to drop exclusively here on SoundCloud.    

At 114bpm, it grooves instead of sprints.  The palette of sound colors is limited to just a few and the grind of repetition is a feature on this track, not a bug.  There is progression and there is acceleration, as the energy level of the song does built throughout the tracks length.  

And the lyrics construct a narrative that is about storytelling techniques and escaping a seemingly inevitable fate--"the magic of quibbles."  That sure feels like a worthy topic to make an Interbay song about!  

Is there at least a little bit of Rufus Du Sol influence here?  I think so.  Your mileage may vary, of course.  

"Keep your eyes out for those sly quibbles."  

Heading into the weekend, this slightly dark but still worthy of an enthusiastic dance track feels perfectly timed.  Hopefully you'll give this one a listen, a like, a repost and share.  Add it to a groovy dance playlist.  Leave a comment.

I've been doing a lot of synthesizer-focused electronic dance music--both modern and retro styles, or as is typical for Interbay, a melange of both.  I wanted to do a more traditional guitar-centric rock song.  

And I don't think I've made a better one.

Sure, I've made guitar-centric post-punk songs that are definitely in my wheelhouse.  But, the kind of "rock" that Tom Petty might have done?  That R.E.M.  or Let's Active might have done?  That The Beatles might have done (well, the Revolver or earlier Beatles)?  I don't think I've managed anything like that...until now.  

For a change, I managed to keep this simple.  I actually took out things that I thought cluttered the mix instead of trying to paint in all of the white spaces (horror vacui!!!!  Hey Crash!  Here's a reference only you and I will get!!!).  

Fearing, as I always do, for Icarus' safety, I had put a bunch of effects on the dialogue snippets to hide them from the sentinels searching for Zion...but upon listening to it one last time before uploading it here, I realized that those effects made the whole track unlistenable.  So, I took the levels of effects down and found different ways to break up the sentinel enticing morsels.  

Now, I am not a natural guitarist (I have the fingertips of someone who types a lot.)  I've played bass (badly) but just as my brain on drums can't handle more than three limbs at a time, my brain on guitars would be happier with two strings less rather than two strings more.  

So, though I got a good bell like sound--a very Rickenbacker-y sound--I'm not as confident in what has been recorded.  (Is this my first ever attempt at a guitar solo?  Its...well, it fills the empty space I left for it, so I'll call that a win.)  

I may revisit this, write some proper words for it and sing on it...someday.  But for now, it is serendipitous that this song with an example of taking the risk to share your creative efforts with others, even if they may not be very good or make sense, is married to music that is my creative effort (no non-vocal samples on this), even though it may not be very good, and may not make any sense.  

A barbaric yawp from a sweaty toothed madman, indeed.  

(Meanwhile, both my kid and I remain sick...whether that will impact future Interbay tracks?  How could it not?)
