Went out one day
To make his fortune
In the family way.

Singing sad songs
Until they hollered
Collecting coins
Fake and solid.

Standing
Beneath an arch
He sang so sadly
And so hollow.

That the arch
Collapsed
Burying him
Up to his collar.

Shocked by this
He really howled
With hoots of pain
And damaged pride.

In time he recovered
But could not sing
The saddest cut
No money coming in.

He had to find
Another way
With arches
Always far away.

Town crier
Now became his job
Instead of sad songs
Bad news his daily bob.

Writer of prose and poetry since mid-1960s. Given an acoustic guitar in 1978 by long-suffering sister. Many songs produced that way. More recently, guitar skills all but faded, using GarageBand and Logic Pro to put words to music.
