Stranger with Killagraham from Milo & Otis and Sam Dew

Following on from the release of Innershades' No Stopping EP on Creme Organization last summer, the Dutch label revisits the a-side cut 'Nina At The Boiler Room' with two remixers in tow. Those remixers are Bristol's bass pioneer Kowton and the inimitable production duo of Tuff City Kids. 

Unterton and Delsin duo Gerd Janson & Phillip Lauer aka Tuff City Kids turn in a bulky, piano laced and acid riddled remix of 'Nina' that is a pure party starter. Idle Hands and Hessle Audio man Kowton reworks 'Nina' into something run through with plenty of sirens, raw, crunchy drum loops and rolling percussive lines. It's stormy and tumultuous and is full of frosty textures. These are two abrasive tracks designed for maximum impact on the dancefloor.

Is the Hyenah from Joburg or from Berlin? It could be both, or maybe
neither. We don’t know. And we don’t really care because the music has hit
us in a huge way and we’re just happy to be bringing you this serious club
pressure with the debut Hyenah release here on Freerange. On lead track
The Wish (Dub) we’re treated to a percussion fueled, bass-heavy monster of
a track which balances the dextrous, fluid grooves of the Motherland with
immaculate teutonic sonics just perfectly. Slowly moving strings create a
wonderful tension as the rhythm builds in intensity with rattling drums
taking centre stage and jumping out of the mix like firecrackers.

Next up we have King Kobra which goes straight for the jugular with a
stripped-back, bare-bones groove, a beautifully simple percussion rhythm
becoming all you need for the main hook. Dubbed out deep house minimalism
is the name of the game here, with the hypnotic beats drawing you in and
the fat Hyenah production engulfing you like a sandstorm.

Flip over for a brilliant remix from our favorite French DJ and producer
Manoo.  This man has been responsible for some of the finest soul-tinged
and afro-infused house music over the last 10 years with releases on
Deeply Rooted House, Buzzin’ Fly and Real Tone.  His remixes for everyone
from Maya Jane Coles and Louis Vega to Osunlade and Terrence Parker are
testament to the skills possessed.  Once again Manoo delivers in spades
with this remix of The Wish, keeping the overall vibe intact but adding a
rolling bassline, extra vocal hits and extending the arrangement into a
most glorious ten minute workout.

ZamZam number 20 is a stunning power-move from the new Berlin-based duo of Dub War and Infra.  This is sophisticated dubwise for the head and the feet, as elegant as it is heavy, a vocal / dub combination that will satisfy the most critical and demanding dubheads.  Full of menace and intrigue, 'If It’s Not The Police' and 'If It’s Not The Dub' feature deep studio science and sound design paired with classic dub aesthetics, dubstep bass-weight, and halftime garage swing.  Analog-sounding cymbals and rim shots ride the subterranean undertow of the kick and bass to create a heaving, spacious rhythm made to move bodies and transport minds together.

The vocal speaks of police and military violence disrupting the dance, but this musing is in stark contrast to the the tune itself which feels devoid of human presence - it is the sound of the city without its people: dark, spacious, and dripping wet in the blackness, as if the empty alleys and backstreets of London and Berlin were suddenly plunged into darkness and mysteriously emptied of their inhabitants.  The dub eliminates the techy, lurching growl of the A side, instead forwarding congas and snatches of percussion, and dubbing the vocal and the thick atmospheres to highly evocative effect.

The full Dub War complement is Benny ill (Horsepower Productions) & Bill Robin (Rebel HiFi, South London HiFi) both hailing from South London.  They have worked together under a number of aliases since 1992, but for this release Bill Robin adopts the name solo for the first time.  The first Dub War 12,” 'Murderous Style / Generation,’ a true classic of dubby 2 step / proto-dubstep, was released on the mighty Tempa label in 2001.  Their most recent release, 'The Funky Deal / To The Depths’ also dropped via Tempa in 2011.  Infra is prolific bass music producer, sound designer, DJ, and promoter who runs the Impulse and Dubmarine parties in Berlin and has a residency at Subland. He also hosts the monthly Impulse radio show on BLN.FM.
