Monument Festival 2022: Dorisburg & Efraim Kent hybrid

For Podcast #165, we’re thrilled to bring you the live recording of F-ON’s opening set from this year’s Paral.lel Festival. 

Paral.lel was, for us, the most nourishing of soul food. Set in the spectacular, breath-taking mountains two-hours north of Barcelona, deep green tree-covered mountains enclosed the dancefloor, an endless stretch of sky reached overhead, a beautiful sound system ensured the frequencies permeated, engulfing us in their warm embrace, and a crowd of beautiful, like-minded souls came together, surrendering to the rhythms and grooves gifted to us by an impressive line-up of talent over 2.5 days.

Magic is almost inevitable when people are united by their shared, deep devotion to music. Throw in nature in its rawest, awe-inspiring form, and of course the music itself delivered with such passion and attentiveness, and you have very raw and real energetic alignment which naturally culminates in countless memorable moments. And it was indeed a weekend of magical moments - where the shadows of clouds sweeping across a canvass of trees aligning the slopes were our only reminder that life and time moved on while we lost ourselves in the mountains.

Esteemed DJ, producer and promoter from Madrid, F-ON (aka Alfonso Pomeda) was on the festival’s opening duties on Friday afternoon, ensuring the warmest of welcomes to the Paral.lel community as they arrived on site. And indeed, his set was as warm and inviting as his smile; deep and down-tempo, with sultry grooves and long, steady, alluring mixes; frequencies gently reverberating off the mountains and trees surrounding us, reaching out and inviting us in. What better way to kick-start a very special weekend celebrating the music we love.

"Tribal and wild dances on the meadows hidden among redwoods. The ancestor worship has begun. The guru, the clan healer, has prepared the mixture for the entire circle of people who gaze at the light in the center. The campfire will make them sweat, the drums will make them dance and the mixture will make them float. There is no turning back from such hypnosis."

Forest On Stasys (@forestonstasys), owner and electronic explorer in Danza Nativa (@danza-nativa). The creativity of Forest On Stasys is Influenced by tribal minimalist techno in the nineties and the deepest and most abstract techno currently. In his tracks the most seductive elements are the use of resonant basses perfectly combined with long and reverberated pads, extensive sonorous landscapes that are modified by continuous movement of LFO, solid grooves and strident percussions. But not everything that comes out of his head is created with an intention to be used on the dance floor. He has a great admiration for drone and ambient tracks, without a rhythmic pattern that predominates, where the main factor is to captivate the listener with melodies that can be marked by a strong melancholy or with notes that give a certain feeling of satisfaction depending on his current mood.

The light and dark, the fast and slow, the loud and quiet - one cannot exist without the other and opposing qualities, in balance, each bring out the best in life - and often also in music. Berlin-based artist Mareena embodies this interplay perfectly. May it be through her well-built Techno DJ Sets in Clubs all over the world or as Podcast host and Label Owner of the always calming and ever-giving UNRUSH series - Mareena understood the integration of this dualism like few other artists nowadays. A catch-up between Delayed and her was long overdue and our discussion expanded from the 90’ies, over timeless music to the challenges of the life of an artist these days.

This is what Mareena said about the mix:
'I had a lot of ideas for a calm mix. I ended up with a dub techno mix. A genre that is sticking with me since my beginnings. I can't get tired of chords and delays. Since your platform is called “Delayed” it seemed just appropriate ;) The mix is recorded between 115 – 120 BPM. I wanted to create something more chill. A mix you listen to while cooking, having friends over or wandering around the streets. My idea was a deeper psychedelic vibe rather than the usual dance floor music.'

Cloutier’s twenty-plus year commitment has been built upon his integrity as a DJ and authority as a selector. His reputation as an unequivocal, dexterous force is increasingly becoming one of note. Vand’s sets are explorations into story-telling hypnotica with a crossover from ambient to dance floor material. With productions released on Nyame Records a double EP collaboration with Bas Dobbelaer on SoHaSo and a solo appearance on F-on’s Alpenglühen. Besides making music and being a deejay he also explored to present himself as a live act in recent years. With adebut at the notable Mostra Festival and a 3-hour live improvisation at La Nature Festival with fellow roommates Shoal and Queniv. He is now mostly affiliated to the ISOTOOP collective transmitting their unique sonic identity.

Clear as spring water, the memory of Shoal's beautiful live set echoing through the Norwegian mountains, finally sharing the stage together at Monument (@monument-podcast) after meeting in Amsterdam several years ago. Those familiar with our dear friends at Harmony Rec (@harmony-rec) will be undoubtedly familiar with Kenny's impeccable body of work, and for the rest an eye-opening treat awaits. Here, Kenny gathers highlights from his recent live sets and newly recorded material, arranged and refined into a perfect contemplation of the crisp arboreal air, a vivid composition of body and sound entwined tightly beneath the earth.
