Here is what Joshua Fried said about 'phse 4' right after we played the full 20-minute version at the release party on May 13, 2025, at the maximum audiophile Light & Sound Design studio. 

"It means so much to me that you're here. And I wanna talk a little bit about the piece you just heard. But first, let's hear it again. The whole thing. Ready? Here we go...

Two seconds of audio. For a twenty minute piece.

I...stretched it. You can stretch, explode, a sound—just by making little loops, that slowly move through the material, or zoom in on different spots. 

And we can slice it up, make a pulse. By excerpting even smaller bits, with what they call gates. Line up the spinning loop with the pulsing gate, you got yourself a nice pattern. 

But then...the loop starts to drift! You go out of phase! You start to cycle. Keep...drifting, and you go through all these patterns.

Yeah but wait-- you’ve still got the pulse! The pulse doesn’t change, the beat goes on. It’s just that the rest of the world is kind of shifting underneath it.

Which is how I feel most of the time.

And the processing is all digital. Which means I can control this just...as...precisely...as I want. [If laughter, add line “Some of you know me pretty well.”]

But now the source material...the sounds, the density. Y'know, the process is very sensitive to microscopic differences in the source. 

So we wanna hone the material very carefully, in terms of... 

We need to calibrate the source, according to... according to...

I don't know. I don't know! 

I think that's beautiful! Honestly--the parts that I just put in because, I was like whatever, I have no idea how to fly this thing...

...but those bits? They kinda make the piece.

This means my journey is in its beginnings, and that is a rich blessing. Beginner's Mind and all, y'know?

"My set recording from this past Summer's Honcho Campout was a very important one for me as I've been attending the festival since 2016, and from that, made a lot of friends, reunited with childhood ones and grew closer as part of the bigger family. Lots of love to the whole Campout crew!

This set is a reflection of inputs starting from 1998-2001 sitting in my room, downloading files in the background on dial-up 24/7 in my old college apartment and then pulling ripped vinyl from my travel hauls, to sounds given to me in the past year."
