Chicago's Jana Rush returns with "Painful Enlightenment", an intense emotional rollercoaster of disfigured samples, quivering electronics and vagrant percussion. As implied by the title, the album is a document of her own personal growth through struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts, a glimpse into a dark period of her life amid learning the art of letting go. Her debut for Planet Mu is the follow-up to her twisted "Pariah" LP on Objects Limited. It's euphonic and uplifting, even blissful, yet equally chilling, and at times a difficult listening experience. Jana says "This album is not a footwork album. It's more like dark experimental listening music, an opportunity to be myself without judgement!"

The album opens up with the pessimistic "Moanin’", its gorgeous, blazing sax solo pulled back and forth like it was being played through a possessed tape recorder. Baneful bass pulsates over dozens of maniacal vocal samples on "Suicidal Ideation", an absolutely mesmerizing collage of beauty and terror with a runtime of nine minutes. Moody guitar plucks cry over an intricate bed of micropercussion and erratic low-end blasts on the title track, one of the more sombre moments of the album. At the halfway mark, the record takes a dark, twisted turn, as "Disorientation" well, disorients, with its thick layers of untraceable alien sounds unfolding and contracting back into themselves. Thick layers of time-stretched textures and bewildering rhythms meet masterfully placed snares on "Intergalactic Battle", featuring Teklife’s DJ Paypal. On "Drivin’ Me Insane", Jana and collaborator Nancy Fortune stretch three words back and forth and inside-out over the course of three minutes, using every last gasp and sibilance possible. The album closes with Paypal making his second appearance. "Just a Taste" is an encore featuring many of the fundamental sonics that make up the LP, haunting horns and paranoid voices struggle to speak over fluctuating low-end harmonics. 

An established veteran from the world of ghetto house and juke who cut her teeth on Dance Mania records in the late nineties, Jana has the stripes, so to call her an outsider would be fictitious, yet she is a true unicorn within the history of that realm and becomes more and more alienated from formulas and trends on each new record she creates. "Painful Enlightenment" is full of dense, intricate abstractions, paired with rapidly moving structures and is unlikely to sound the same twice, as every listen exposes new layers of its vibrant, transcendental details.

‘Established!’ is the new album from RP Boo, his fourth full-length for Planet Mu. In 2013, Mu released his debut ‘Legacy’ – an acclaimed album that put RP on the international music map, acknowledging his unique role in the creation of the Chicago-developed art form known as Footwork. It’s been said that RP Boo is to Footwork what Juan Atkins is to Techno. The start. The Soul.

RP Boo deliberately labelled his new album ‘Established!’ because that’s simply what he is. He’s thankful for being bestowed with a unique talent that has not diminished and continues to excite Footworkers both locally in Chicago and around the globe. Footwork remains a Chicago-centred art form, under-recognized at home, yet loved worldwide and RP remains its grounding point, with his productions being the place the entire scene goes to.

On ‘Established!’ RP looks back to that time when he was inventing Footwork, going out listening to disco and linking with the creators of house such as Paul Johnson. For tracks like ‘Another Night To Party’ or ‘Finally Here (ft. Afiya)’ he takes himself back in time to when he started DJing, playing ghetto house and being inspired by jack tracks. These moments were the foundation point to create his own style, elevating his sound into new territories for the future. With ‘Established!’ RP wanted to return what he soaked up over his journey and remind people of the layers of connections between various Chicago dance musics.

Another side of ‘Established!’ is the ’battle track’ mentality. The battle dance circle of course comes from Hip-Hop and also earlier forms of American Black Music. Tracks like ‘Haters Increase The Heat!’ reflect this competitive aspect of Footwork – RP notes “I was feeling heat that I detected targeting me in the scene and I grab it and tracked it out and that’s what fueled the track.” He adds “I’m not bothered by haters and no one should be – there’s no valid reason to.” He goes on to explain the track ‘Now U Know’ – how the track takes that hater energy and uses it as a way to “set the seed for footwork battles” transferring the energy “to a dancer (who can then) display it with goodness of their art.“ RP goes on to indicate how this reflects Chicago – “I’m a witness. Without understanding how, you can have hate implanted in society.” Footwork to RP is a way to counter these social ills – “to then grow out of it and have people understanding greater change – to start heading in the right direction.”

‘Established!’ is also a record about Black pride, Black dignity, Black beauty and Black creativity. This is perhaps best reflected in the track “Beauty Speak Of Sounds.“ The track was one of the last compositions completed for the album and RP was imagining himself “in the grasslands of Africa” and he set about thinking how his “spirit” felt in that setting using sounds and grooves that he wouldn’t normally use.

Ultimately ‘Established!’ is a snapshot of RP Boo letting listeners even further into his musical world – ”I want the listeners to really get close to something beautiful, to sit back and enjoy with family and friends.”

Kédu (@keduu), otherwise known as Jess Penson, is an undeniably pivotal artist currently based in Tamaki Makaurau. Kédu has explored many different facets of her musicality throughout the years, starting off in Rnb girl group Techniclr and later finding her way into electronic music as one half of producer, DJ, and live electronic performance duo Kédu Carlö. Influenced by her eclectic taste, Kédu’s sound draws on genres such as Jazz and RnB as well as her love for Chicago/acid house, Left-field, Jersey Club and Breaks.

RA MIX 022 - Endless Mow - spectral Terra

On the next All Centre release we welcome Montreal-based artist laced to the fold. The Causal Chain boss delivers a four track EP including a remix from fellow Canadian SIM.

The dreamy, dubbed-out pads and intricate minimal percussion of Bubble Beam ease us into the record. Stuttering kicks and deep subs kick things into gear, as the echoing chords fold in and out of themselves. Later, new harmonies and rhythmic switch-ups give further depth to the track, before closing with a glitched outro.

Next up, Caustic Reverie opens with hypnotic stabs and careful sound design, anchored by cavernous bass hits. The track breaks down before heavy broken techno rhythms emerge, 
with dubby chords and vocal chops dancing between them.

Future Sight brings the energy back down with a blissful ambient intro. Here, laced takes cues from ambient jungle, as precisely cut breakbeats weave amongst punchy sub bass hits and infectious melodies. Gradually the energy rises, allowing compelling kick drums to drive the track forwards.

Retaining the meditative pads of the original, SIM turns in a low-tempo rework of Future Sight. Rolling kick drums provide the basis for echoing chords and tripped-out sound design. The melodic elements are then stripped back, giving way to a dub inspired percussive section, before returning to the atmospheric tones of the introduction.

Caustic Reverie is out across all platforms on the 8th April.
