About the piece:
"first melt" is inspired by David Hockney’s video piece, “The four seasons, Woldgate Woods (Spring 2011, Summer 2010, Autumn 2010, Winter 2010).” This work draws its narrative influence from the transition of winter into spring, thinking of the building of kinetic energy within ice that eventually causes its crystals to melt. Throughout the course of first melt, materials and melodies accumulate, compress, and celebrate jubilantly before breaking down into a pool of resonant, lush vibraphone sustained chords.

Premiered by Sō Percussion May 15, 2024 at Lee Hall in Princeton, NJ. Presented by Princeton Sound Kitchen (PSK).

Forest Drive West is the alias of producer Joe Baker from Plaistow, East London. His music has created a stir across the UK underground and beyond, with stripped-down, atmospheric and hypnotic techno tracks contrasting with his heavier, jungle-influenced sounds – all with a connecting thread that explores intricate rhythms and inventive percussion.

Since 2016, Forest Drive West has been building a rapidly growing catalogue of releases, receiving critical acclaim for records on labels such as Livity Sound, Ilian Tape and Rupture London. His ‘Jungle Crack' and ‘Set free’ EPs show a stunning command of sound design and complex rhythms, and they remain some of Rupture London's most sought-after releases.

1.このミックスはどちらで収録したものですか? 
自宅のスタジオでAbeltonを使用して録音したよ。

2.コンセプトがあれば教えてください。
今回のミックスは3月6日にオランダ・アムステルダムのクラブ“Shelter”でプレイするのをイメージして制作してみた。自分の好きな曲を中心に時間をかけて選曲し、BPM は最後170になるけれど大体135前後で、かなりステッピーな仕上がりだよ。お気に入りのAmetsubのトラックやオールドスクールなSquarepusher のトラックも含まれている。
いくつかのメロディックミックス、特にCommodoとLOFTのマッシュアップのところには非常に満足している。また数トラックには音を追加してミックスしているから、じっくり楽しんでもらいたい。

3.最近の活動を教えてください。
3月12日にMax CooperのレーベルMeshから、ニュー アルバム『Zero 』をリリースするので、ぜひチェックしてほしい。このミックスにもアルバムから3 曲使用した。
